- Time Team investigate a site that is thought to contain an enormous Roman villa, full of exquisite Roman mosaics. The catch? Half the site is buried underneath a railway line. Is there really a Roman Villa buried here and how much of it survived the construction of the Great Western Railway?

I thought I'd seen all the Time Team episodes at least twice, but this is the second "new to me" episode I've seen in the past two weeks.
Same here! I've rewatched them all many times but I can always pop upon new ones haha
Me too. I've never seen this one. I'm sure I'd remember an episode in which their tools were stolen. (Gotta love the dirtbags that just can't leave stuff that doesn't belong to them, eh?)
It's great to find a new episode. 😄
Same
Same
Every time I see these I try and picture the people who lived so long long long ago it’s so fascinating I just wish I was younger so I could really get into all of this not by just watching it I’m 65 so I think I’m a little too old to actually do it so I’ll just watch it 👍🏻
Shout out to the rabbits, the unsung heroes of this episode!😳
Didn't the moles help in another episode?
Wascally wabbits.
It's heartbreaking to know that such a piece of history was destroyed. I mean I get it but damn so sad.
It was an incident involving rail works back in 1971 that triggered modern legislation protecting ancient monuments. The history of what has been lost, is just as facinating as the archeology itself.
I like Guy de la Bedoyere and his knowledge of the Romans. Took me awhile to get his name right and I love saying it because it just rolls off the tongue.
Madame de la Bedoyere: "Guy, why are the majority of archeologists women?''
Guy: "You have a natural ability to dig up the past.''
😁
de la Bedoyere...next weeks Difficult Word ....

3:57 History Hit should consider changing 'It's like Netflix for History' to something else, as 'Netflix' is almost a pejorative to most of its potential costumers.
I certainly regard 'Netflix' with a negative connotation, if not outright disdain.
I think it's more the style of the format under comparison. No other streaming platform is as universally known and understood "what it is" across the world. The politics behind Netflix are up for debate, but I would certainly agree, History Hit is like a smorgasbord streaming service just for history documentaries.
Thanks for posting
I enjoy watching multiple times I always see something different or I perceive differently. Mick was a great piece maker..
I've just discovered your time team videos and I love them. ❓❓❓ Why do you limit your digs to 3 days ❓❓❓
Budget and the fact that most of the participants have normal day jobs (teaching, research etc.) A lot of the digs are done over a weekend + Friday 🙂
Would you prefer to sit in front of the tv and watch it non-stop, every day, for a normal 3 year dig?
@@c1ph3rpunk yes
It has to do with they all having day jobs.
@@c1ph3rpunk definitely.
it must have been really cold out there. poor Phil is freezing.
I'm Canadian and that looks like shorts weather 🇨🇦😄 good day for a barbecue
This happened also in Sardinia, precisely in Porto Torres!
Thank you.
This one has got to be one of the funniest episodes of Time Team that I have ever seen. John Gater is hilarious in this one.
That’s a really cool train it’s sleek looking 👍🏻
I love your sense of British connection to history and English community. My ancestors were English. And being English we're a weird mix of Viking, Roman, angle, Norman, Saxon. We are English mutts one and all. (Angland - Anglish - get it?)
I watched Time Team for years and could never understand why they couldn't send in the geophys team in the day before!?
Money. The three days is actually five days, one extra day setup and one take down. This is not free the average show cost. 200,000 pounds
Beautiful replica mosaic
17:32 Extremely attractive to live...If you can deal with the many thieves and robbers in the area trying to rid you of... oh... trailers full of vital equipment...
Can you explain as to what the library is going to be used for?? Is it something the community will use??
Wow. What a great camp area. I don't think we'll be able to get our 21 foot off-road van down that track. However, I'd love to have a fish in that creek.❤❤.
Fungus matters too! We should never ignore the shroom.🙃
Long term, you will have to make a way to get from one side of the convent to the other without having to drive through the hall. You had mentioned possibly craning over a wall. Can't you just remove the wall?
I would have counted fence posts 😂😂
I suspect Stewart will work it out while the rest of them prat about
Stewart just loves going up in the helicopter with Mick and putting meat on the bones of the crop marks and the 'Lumps and Bumps'.
I love to think a bunch of local youths came around and tossed all the tools in the hedge just for a chuckle. Who else would do something like that? Im sure theyre pretty pleased to get a mention in episode.
As for Phil keeping his shovel with him, sounds like hes gotten his tools stolen or lost before. Im betting stolen, if he can keep that same hat since presumably his birth then he can probably mind his tools.
The trailer they were stored in was stolen
@@the_lost_navigator Ahh I assumed it was more of a "Lets pop this lock and fuck with em" kinda scenario. Mustve missed the mention of a trailer
I can't believe that they couldn't divert the railway way back when. Obviously the railway took most of it.
One guess to whom the thieves were , I am sure you are right.
Take the rover to the Smallest cog. I know they would do a great job.
Tim Allen - Time Team or Tool Time?🤔
Who the hell would steal tools? Especially in a place as beautiful as that? I’d imagine growing up in that place is probably boring, but also beautiful. Not the kind of place I’d imagine thieves hanging out. When I think of thieves, I think of Manhattan and London and Paris. I don’t think of the countryside.
There will be a Gypsy camp site somewhere close by, they will steal anything they can get their hands on.
Hvis romerne har været så tæt på Danmark, kan jeg forstå, at Vikingerne ikke skulle så langt, som vi måske regnede med. Men det er måske en misforståelse? Spændende er det.😮
Oh, John just looks like a baby here.
* Fact ! There is a Huge Beautiful Mosaic underneath Kingston Crown Court in Kingston upon Thames !!!
Well makes you wonder, the egyptians did the same and history continues. Just use what is avalible to continue to growing civilization. They are gone and we need to continue to grow so history will continue to disappear and our generation will continue to make more history.
Strokes and squiggles... means Welsh...not Roman.
LONDON/IVM should be always very proud that it was established by IMPERIVM ROMANVM - THE MOST POWERFUL EMPIRE, not just physically. Rome is a TESTIMONY to THE GREATEST EMPIRE THAT EVER EXISTED, from province of Hispania to province of Mesopotamia, from province of BRITANNIA to other ROMAN provinces of Aegyptus, Africa,Alpes Cottiae, Alpes Maritimae, Alpes Poenninae, Arabia Petraea, Armenia Inferior, Asia, Assyria, Bithynia, , Cappadocia, Cilicia, Commagene, Corduene, Corsica et Sardinia, Creta et Cyrenaica, Cyprus, Dacia, Dalmatia | Epirus | Galatia | Gallia Aquitania | Gallia Belgica | Gallia Lugdunensis | Gallia Narbonensis | Germania Inferior | Germania Superior | Hispania Baetica | Hispania Lusitania | Hispania Tarraconensis | Italia | Iudaea | Lycaonia | Lycia | Macedonia | Mauretania Caesariensis | Mauretania Tingitana | Moesia | Noricum | Numidia | Osroene | Pannonia | Pamphylia | Pisidia | Pontus | Raetia | Sicilia | Sophene | Syria | Thracia
Brittania - an obsession of IMPERIVM ROMANVM and roman emperors , Rome was so obsessed with winning the access to Britannia, many did not understand why, it was lacking strategic location of Hispania or Gaul, yet Rome has waged a war after war to conquer her. Rome centre was the medditerranie which catapulted it to Superpower of antique world , Yet Brittania was like magnet for the Rome, so much so that they the Romans didnt know when to let go... Only they know why ...
I agree, It may have been a brutal life for most, BUT almost anyone could become a Roman citizen and the benefits were many. Better food and opportunities for a start. You could always get a job and learn a trade, which beat the hell out of subsistence farming. It was possible to make a fortune. For those who wanted to see the world it was heaven on earth.
For anyone who aspired to improvements beyond their own ego however, it would have been very disappointing. Urban middle class life was just as superficial, corrupt and stagnate as it is today.
Britannia grew fabulous crops to feed the empire and also had tin and other metals that the Romans wanted for tools and weapons!
So did they catch the
💩💩's that stole the trailer?
Some people with money on their mind’s probably saw this and thought that they already found something valuable and that’s why they threw everything around because they couldn’t find anything ‼️‼️ SUCKS TO BE THEM😂
Destroyed? Probably. To be fair, if you plant herbs in your garden in parts of England, you’ll turn up Roman archeology.
Ever heard of SECURITY
how dare they dumped the tools into a dig what awful silly buggers
A typical Mick Aston 'Time Team' dig, plenty of planning and very little digging on day one, if they follow the usual script on Mick's digs the more that time progresses the way more digging and less planning there will be.
Why only 3 days? The rushing host skipping around like a blind rabbit is silly.
Because nobody wants to watch a 3 year dig, which is entirely plausible in archeology. They obviously knew more about what people want to watch than you, they did it successfully for 20+ years.
@@c1ph3rpunk You seem lonely and filled with anxiety. Maybe get outside and touch some grass? I’m sure your parents need to clean the basement.
No because the archaeologists and diggers all had day jobs, so they had to limit the dig to the Friday + the weekend.
Gosh, I'm tired reading that stupid question. Think a moment how long a weekend is and then try to answer your question yourself. Also this happened to be a TV show that covers multiple excavations per season.

Lots of men talking over women on this show..
Good. Keep whining on their behalf, Sir Lancelot. We are all in awe of your shining virtue.
@@AllahuSnackbar270 Good one!
@@andersandersen6295 Yeah, I was being sarcastic, but it's turning into pity for the younglings. I'm in my thirties, and all I can tell you is to fight back. Take what you get, if you want to, but don't be afraid to tell girls you don't see as wife materials so. Tell them, "thanks for letting me dip, but wouldn't want to see you again", unless you want to. Never pity-stay with the scum among women.
I dunno, I think throughout the course of the show, Carenza holds her own explaining what's going on. She has as much sway as Phil or John or Guy or any of the regular experts.
@@RatelHBadger Doesn't stop the protective incel knights.
Time Team: time to add more women experts to your shows. When the few that do appear and are allowed a few seconds to comment they are often cut short. Questions are often not directed at them even when they are on screen. Archaeology is not by nature a boy's club - it has been created so. There are plenty of female archaeologists out there. Let's see more of them on your show.
i see the romans still liked there swastikas
