I think it depends on a lot of factors…. Personally, I’m of a pretty good size being 6’3 / 220lbs. I’ve trained hard in all the sports I’ve competed in and I’m not by any means a super star athlete but I’m likely more athletic than a guy like Rudy. However, I don’t think I could ever be motivated to take hits like Rudy Day In and Day Out like that. Especially if there’d be almost no chance that I’d make the team or be rewarded for all that pain and embarrassment. I think it’s actually far more possible for a person of average intelligence to be accepted into a University with a low admission rate. Studying hard, acquiring a good tutor, applying multiple times and making connections with the right people goes very, very far. But to each their own. It all depends on how motivated you are to get what you want.
It's a solid discussion. ND's current acceptance rate is 15% (top-tier schools hovered around 20% in the '70s). Rudy allegedly did not have the grades for Joliet Community College, so Father Cavanaugh's influence ultimately allowed him admission to HC. Fortunately, he was able to identify a learning disability, which - who knows what treatments existed - provided at least a reason for his academic troubles and hopefully a focused plan. However, he's a "dreamer" in tryouts. One of the two selected - out of the 15 - who will "run the opposition's plays." He had approximately a 13.3% chance to earn a spot.

I admire Rudy for being the underdog, he may not be the biggest or strongest but he has more heart than anyone in this movie not letting his size stop him from earning a spot on Notre Dame Football Team. I definitely gained a lot of respect when all the Players stood in Solidarity with Rudy for not getting to suit up and how they all put their jerseys in a pile. great way to honor a teammate and enjoyed hearing the crowd chanting Rudy, Rudy Rudy before he went into the game. one of the best inspirational inspiring movies about not giving up and pursuing your dreams while not being hindered by your size or strength but being driven by something greater which is proving those who tell you what you can and can't do.
I’ve read all the comments said in these posts. Weather or not it’s 100% what actually happened. The most powerful message in this movie and his life. Dispute Rudy lack of athletic ability. Prove me wrong. Fight fight fight! Don’t quit. I needed his motivation to power through it.

What a great and accurate depiction of coaches, especially the way Parseghian defers to his subordinates. I also like the part where he’s so pissed he kicks grass.
Hate to say it but I feel Rudy really hard. I was the smallest kid on any team I was in until junior year and never cut, senior year won most improved and lead my team in tackles. If your undersized, don’t stop trying, don’t quit just because your smaller or if your parents or role models say you will probably be cut. Don’t give up 🔥
I just watched 'Greater' which is essentially the same story and couldn't remember a thing about it. The music and cinematography in 'Rudy' alone is enough reason to like this movie.
As my pop pop was dying last year I gave him one last hug and he whispered to me “be good for pop pop, be good” so I promised him that I would dress and run out of that tunnel one day. It’s written in my wall to this day and I’m 3 years closer to my dream wish me luck
Good luck, but don’t hang your self worth on that goal. The odds are heavily stacked against you. Unless youre winning state football player of the year, there’s a good chance you wont make it. There are plenty of 3* All-State players that dont get offered from schools like ND.
I can tell you that players like Rudy, that are undersized, unathletic, but work harder than everybody else. *They* set the example for the rest of the team, including the first string players. Having a guy on your team like Rudy is truly like having 12 men on the field.
@@donarthiazi2443 Well if you remember there may have been a kid on the team that was not a good athlete but worked his tail off. Anytime he did a drill, he at the very least gave his best effort. As a fellow collegiate varsity walk-on (granted, for skiing), you walk a tremendous uphill battle, but videos like this always gave me hope. The day I was presented with my jacket, my starting position, and eventual scholarship made all the difference in the world. This might not be the completely accurate story, but things like this still inspire, and that's very important to people who need that extra boost of motivation.
What i admire about The character Rudy is his determination and Heart . No matter how many times he fell down and got rocked he got right back up to try again He never gives up ! even coach saw his heart 4:33
It was a lot of coaches on the ND staff observing practice over those five days and only one coach noticed the heart of Rudy while the rest of the coaches were focused on Rudy athletic ability and physical stature and didn't want him. That one coach changed Rudy's life by selecting him when no other coach wanted him ! This reminds me of Tom Brady and what he went through !
Rudy will always be my inspiration to never give up even when it seems low never give up and never let up. Bust your ass every day and the results will come.
Never thought of myself as smaller growing up. But it sure explains my lousy record in schoolyard fights. I love Rudy. I have no ability as an athlete ever, but I got an NCAA scholarship in cross country and Nordic skiing. You know, sports for smaller guys.:)
I tried out for a D2 football program and it was probably the hardest thing I ever did and I went through basic training at Ft Benning. Coaches said I had the "hustle" but was too small. I was about 245 lbs and a DE in high school, I dropped to 175 for the Army and couldnt catch on to another position
Similar situation for me played defensive lineman all four years of high school. I was a 6’3 190 pound defensive tackle never started or played a single game my senior year not even on special teams. My junior year I was sidelined from having undergone hernia surgery and missed a huge majority of the season. I told people that I was planning to continue my football career by walking on at a local community college. A lot of doubters from teammates, coaches, even my family. Everyone said I should change positions but I didn’t know anything but defensive line. First week of summer tryouts going in at 190 pounds gave it my all, unfortunately got cut afterwards. I learned a lot community colleges and other universities don’t give a damn about heart, all they care about is that you have size and talent. But getting cut from the team was probably the best thing to ever happen to me.
Fun fact: Jerry Goldsmith asked his manager “when are you going to give me another movie like Hoosiers? He kept his eye open and then offered him Rudy. You know the rest of the story.
Anyone that’s played ball gets this….Pop Warner , middle school, Jr High, high school, college etc…..you have to want to be there….training in the summer heat, with shells, then full equipment…going half speed then full throttle…..dings, cuts, blood, injuries are all part of it…..but once made the camaraderie is forever…..never give up…..

Tell this to the Bulls man
Shook😱👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Eagle Eyes just like captain America!
You have to "want" to do it.
There is no gene for the human spirit! From another movie, but still.
How Sam prepared to enter Mt Doom w/ Frodo. Heart warming and awe inspiring
I came looking for the Sam reference. Knew I wouldn't be disappointed
I’ve read all the comments said in these posts. Weather or not it’s 100% what actually happened. The most powerful message in this movie and his life. Dispute Rudy lack of athletic ability. Prove me wrong. Fight fight fight! Don’t quit. I needed his motivation to power through it.
One of the best sports film scenes ever... As well as the final game scene...
Whole film
Man that score is one of the best ever made
As a little kid I always loved Notre Dame go Irish
"Play like a champion today"
Same here dude. Notre Dame was my favorite team once I watched this movie as a kid.
The greatest football speech in ANY 🏈movie is from this Defensive Backs Coach explaining what it takes to make the team.
😆IT’S FUCKING AWESOME!!!!
Fun fact: The skinny QB (O’hare) that the coach yells at later on in practice was played by none other than a young & still unknown... Vince(nt) Vaughn.
Vincent VAughn is a half-back ...... old school half backs threw passes also, Frank Gifford the broadcaster holds the records for most touchdowns by a non quarterback.
In the scene where Vince (O'Hare) gets sacked, Vince takes a pitch-out from the under-center QB and is then hit by Ruttiger.

Wow, was it really? no one knew that only u . In fact it wasnt in the credits either . Thanks so much. What about Rudy's fat friend D Bop, Was he a somebody also ?
@@daveyboy_ Jon Favreau.
@@ericdaniel323 Really , Wow i never knew. U mean they were both in s movie be4 swingers? awesome
Watch “Made” excellent film. Don’t for get swingers
Every team needs that small guy who works hard.
God miss 90’s everything so amazing back then
As my pop pop was dying last year I gave him one last hug and he whispered to me “be good for pop pop, be good” so I promised him that I would dress and run out of that tunnel one day. It’s written in my wall to this day and I’m 3 years closer to my dream wish me luck
Good luck brah, u can do it, 🔥✊🔥
You will run out of that tunnel!🏈 Play like a champion today!
Good luck man. Never, ever take no for an answer!
Once more into the fray
Into the last good fight I'll ever know
Live or die on this day
Live or die on this day
Good luck, but don’t hang your self worth on that goal. The odds are heavily stacked against you.
Unless youre winning state football player of the year, there’s a good chance you wont make it. There are plenty of 3* All-State players that dont get offered from schools like ND.
“Mercenaries will always beat the draftees. But the volunteers will crush them both”. Can’t beat the heart of a walk on.
Jerry Goldsmith score made this movie. RIP!!!
If you don't have the score, the film is meh
The slow motion video sequences and cut scenes are also perfected.
This movie was the reason I played football, very special place in my heart
The most inspiring music of all time if you think you can’t do something listen to this because you can
Thai music will be in my head when I tryout for the proffesional league so I can remember Rudy and him never giving up
This score is magic
Heavenly
I can tell you that players like Rudy, that are undersized, unathletic, but work harder than everybody else. *They* set the example for the rest of the team, including the first string players. Having a guy on your team like Rudy is truly like having 12 men on the field.
@@donarthiazi2443
Did you ever play the game?
@@HitstikFit
Yeah in high school. A bunch of us had to go both ways. I played defensive end and tight end. I was the gunner on punt returns
@@donarthiazi2443 Well if you remember there may have been a kid on the team that was not a good athlete but worked his tail off. Anytime he did a drill, he at the very least gave his best effort. This type of attitude is contagious, and usually gets praise from coaches and players alike.. it makes the other players work harder in practice than they otherwise would have. Therefore they will perform better on gameday. Thats all i was saying
@@HitstikFit
Yeah. You're right
@@donarthiazi2443 Thank you. 😋 have a good one
This deserves much more views. Wtf is wrong with this generation?
This is one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history
The score feels like a movie within the movie.... amazing!
🤩
It ain’t always about how well you can play. It’s about your heart and determination to show you belong on the team
Sheer will and determination are huge factors to be considered in any life situation.
@@sidneyrodrigues728 I agree. I wasn’t good at all when I played. But more than half my teammates said I had the biggest heart on the team. To this day, that means a lot to me
God I miss those days, spring practice and then fall Friday night and Saturday. Best feeling ever
Rest In Power John Beasley✊🏾
First time seeing him in films was the tryout scene in "Rudy". Had me believing I had a chance while telling me I had little to no chance; and when you get that chance you wish you never gotten that chance, so enjoy the chance while you have it.
Them some serious mind games he was playing, mane.
Thank you for your kind words ♥
The most underrated part is the coach basically goading all of the scout team hopefuls into staying with the "Any of you wanna run home to mama?" line 🤣🤣
The soundtrack for this movie was the best Jerry goldsmith was so great when it comes to music I loved Rudy still one of my favorite movies. Great movie great story having dreams is what makes life tolerable
Katie Williams a true modern masterpiece
As a fellow collegiate varsity walk-on (granted, for skiing), you walk a tremendous uphill battle, but videos like this always gave me hope. The day I was presented with my jacket, my starting position, and eventual scholarship made all the difference in the world.
This might not be the completely accurate story, but things like this still inspire, and that's very important to people who need that extra boost of motivation.
Skiing uphill WOULD be an Uphill battle. *Rimshot*. Thank you, thank you, and don't forget to tip your waiteress!
"For skiiing"! Lol!
I'm a Michigan fan....but goddammit if this isn't one of the greatest movies ever
What i admire about The character Rudy is his determination and Heart . No matter how many times he fell down and got rocked he got right back up to try again He never gives up ! even coach saw his heart 4:33
This music…you can set footage of people stuffing envelopes to it and still have an epic scene.
Great movie great acting great soundtrack and can't wait for this 4K to come out
It was a lot of coaches on the ND staff observing practice over those five days and only one coach noticed the heart of Rudy while the rest of the coaches were focused on Rudy athletic ability and physical stature and didn't want him. That one coach changed Rudy's life by selecting him when no other coach wanted him ! This reminds me of Tom Brady and what he went through !
Rudy will always be my inspiration to never give up even when it seems low never give up and never let up. Bust your ass every day and the results will come.
Can’t tell you how many times.. and still am.. on that side of “cmon I can do it coach”
Me and my grandpa must have watched this a hundred times
One of the greatest sports films of all time
Never thought of myself as smaller growing up. But it sure explains my lousy record in schoolyard fights. I love Rudy. I have no ability as an athlete ever, but I got an NCAA scholarship in cross country and Nordic skiing. You know, sports for smaller guys.:)
This really is a great movie...looking back on it 30 years later.
Little known fact, Rudy did this, all of this, without even having had second breakfast.
Well played
Actually I met him he was real down-to-earth
Such a motivating song and scene...ever need some motivation watch this
I tried out for a D2 football program and it was probably the hardest thing I ever did and I went through basic training at Ft Benning. Coaches said I had the "hustle" but was too small. I was about 245 lbs and a DE in high school, I dropped to 175 for the Army and couldnt catch on to another position
we all thought we were beasts in high school lol
245? Sounds right for a DE/ILB in D1. You mussa been lardy. You RASP?
@@dieterh.9342 I think, that's what he was in high school, then dropped to 175 after his enlistment. Then tried out for d-2 college ball
If you remained at 240 you might have been picked up
Love this scene 😢
Best movie and inspiration for all underdogs.
This tryout was nothing for Rudy from what he already had been through. It truly is the journey that molds
Great Film.
Yesireee
This scene is everything I love about football in one clip.
Fun fact:
Jerry Goldsmith asked his manager “when are you going to give me another movie like Hoosiers? He kept his eye open and then offered him Rudy. You know the rest of the story.
2 of the greatest sport films of all time
One of the greatest scenes of all time
Anyone that’s played ball gets this….Pop Warner , middle school, Jr High, high school, college etc…..you have to want to be there….training in the summer heat, with shells, then full equipment…going half speed then full throttle…..dings, cuts, blood, injuries are all part of it…..but once made the camaraderie is forever…..never give up…..
That 720 really makes this scene worth it...
Greatest Football Movie EVER
👎 you forget any given Sunday
Remember the Titans
I just love this soundtrack and scene 💪
Great movie I live in south bend I remember when this movie came out such a great movie i absolutely loved it.
doesn't have to be about sports exclusively; i listen to this when i do my homework and school assignments!
