I’m Greek and I would never pay that much for a Gyro sandwich. Let alone a minuscule version of one. I also have never seen it that small in all of Greece either. But I appreciate your reviews. If you fly down to Greece, Cyprus (Or any other Greek island). I can recommend some great affordable places for you.
Yeah, that was an insane price even for NYC. I really should've asked how much it was before I got it. I've been to Greece before and really enjoyed it! I'll let you know if I get over there again.
James, as always your reviews and delivery style are dead on. I used to live in the West Village and would frequent many of the areas that you have gone to (Nolita, SoHo, East Village, West Village, etc.). One that was always a standout and excellent value was Piccolo Angolo on Hudson and Jane in the West Village. The owner, Renato, was a real character and added a great deal of entertainment during each dining experience. He has passed away but believe his son Peter and daughter Maria now run this establishment. Very small (seats around 40), but food was always excellent. Dont know if they make it anymore, but the lobster and crab cannelloni (I think I got that right) were excellent. Keep up the great work James.
Yay another upload! I don't know if you have one yet, but I'm going to NY next year for the first time as a college graduation gift. Could you make a video of all the restaurants one should go to ranging from different types (best affordable ones, upscale, trendy, bunch, classics, etc type restaurants)? I also would love a video on a waterfront/boat restaurant in NY!
Thank you! That's an awesome gift and I hope you enjoy NYC! That would be a difficult video to make since I feel that I'm not qualified to make it. I would have to eat at so many more NYC restaurants just to get a decent grasp on what to recommend. It's overwhelming the amount of food options in the city. As far as waterfront restaurants, The River Cafe is definitely the best. It's got a great Lower Manhattan skyline view and the food even earned the establishment a Michelin Star.
Interesting review. The food looked great but the sandwich was for sure a little small, even for a fancy place. Love your work, recently discovered your channel. Love from England, UK🇬🇧👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The RUclips gods randomly recommended you and I’m glad they did. You have a great style and something I dreamed of doing myself . Keep it up Man good stuff
James, I'm glad you check out these places so I don't feel compelled to. I might try a place like this perhaps once every 2 or 3 years. I guess Nolita is the new UES. That dessert looked very good and very creative.
I love exploring new places for lunch service, and having Tuesdays off, offers me the opportunity to do it without the "brunch crowd". I'd definitely give it a shot!
Yeah, the pastas and desserts were in line with other restaurants of similar quality, but the sandwich was a little too expensive. Next time, I'll just get another pasta.
I haven't been to that one yet, but I'll have to check it out sometime. I think a lot of people assume that since Carbone is so famous, that it must be the best, when that's not necessarily the case. It's still a great restaurant though!
Hey James!! I was able to book reservations at 1:45pm for lunch at Torrisi, then realized their hours are closed from 2pm to 5pm. Is this going to be a time issue for my party of 3? I can't imagine being rushed out at a restaurant like this, but you never know.. This will be my 1st time in NY and am traveling here for my birthday. It is a pain to get a hold of them so I thought I can directly ask you through here.. Any advice would be much appreciated!! Your videos are amazing btw! Keep up the great work!! -Alan
Thank you! You should be fine. A lot of restaurants have hours like that. It's just at 2 they won't be taking in any more customers, but they'll continue to serve food for the guests already inside the restaurant. I hope you have a great time in New York and Happy Birthday!
There is no shortage of red sauce Italian restaurants in NYC and its suburbs. I would say Marios in the Bronx is probably the best followed by Dominicks also in the Bronx on Arthur Avenue.
I don't know, I would have a really hard time paying $29 for tortellini...no matter how good it is. Unless I was writing off all the expenses as part of a businesses, I'd die inside spending this kind of money for such small portions. This is why I watch videos of restaurant reviewers so I don't have to. :-)
👞 Sometimes a restaurant gets so popular that I begin to hate it. Hahajaja! I wouldn’t be happy at a loud and expensive restaurant. And by the way, I don’t believe that Clooney story for a second. No way is any restaurant rejecting an A- list star, unless the A-list Star was willing to work in cahoots with them. By seemingly “rejecting” an a-list star, a restaurant can give the impression that it’s THAT exclusive. Your average joe will then take it as a major accomplishment when he scores a table.. . thinking that he “beat out” A-ist star, George Clooney. I’m not saying that’s what happened here, but it could have.
Funny enough, the bar area of this restaurant is actually quieter than it's dining room. Yeah, there's no confirmation that the story is true, but I can't imagine why George Clooney would want to give the impression that he was rejected from the restaurant. If he was working with them, he certainly doesn't need the money and it's not exactly a plus for his image. But no doubt about it, it certainly bolster's the restaurant's image and creates a sense of exclusivity.
Well, it wouldn't be as expensive back when a Euro cost $1.35. Rates fluctuate. Perhaps some day they will reverse again. Meanwhile, food prices in Europe seem pretty reasonable to Americans.
It's all about covering/barely breaking even on real estate rent/staff salaries/overhead. Just buy raw ingredients matching/exceeding quality @ home for fraction of the price. The puffery/pomp of the restaurant biz is necessary to justify razor thin profit margins.
I see what you're saying, of course it will be more affordable to buy those ingredients on one's own, but the average cook will not be able to make dishes of that quality. That restaurant even earned a Michelin Star last year.
What is the name of the restaurant? Did he say “Chorizo”? Or did he say “Theresa”? Or was it “Torisee”? Or perhaps “Choreesee”? Say what??? Also I didn’t know a restaurant was part of a food group…like fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy…😂😂😂
Why must it be justified? Nobody is forced to go there. There only have to be a few thousand people (and there are more) who can afford the prices for places like this to do a good business and stay open... as long as (as James attests to) the food is good enough.
This is the first meal where I just wonder - if I went and spent 100 bucks at lunch, I would expect one heck of a lot more bang for my buck. The food just looked bland and uninspired from beginning to end.
The food was definitely good. This restaurant even earned a Michelin star this year. The sandwich wasn't the most exciting, but the pasta was excellent and the dessert was very interesting.
That honestly was a rip-off. Over $100 for lunch of a tiny gyro and tortellini pomodoro? Come on! That made me sad for you. You cannot have been satisfied by that lunch! Those MFG d-bags are laughing at their customers. I don’t know how they justify the prices they charge for ordinary Italian-American food.
That lamb sandwich was large for me , I could only eat half and take the rest home , my goodness you had that delicious huge pasta dish which was a Mel in and of itself . To many portion expectations in all the restaurants you review as far as portions. You should go for the cheap buffets all you can eat .
Don’t ever mention in any of your dining out comments (not a review) how expensive it is makes you sound like a cheapskate. Expansive compared to what?

A very fancy review, the narration and music had me immersed in the menu.
Thank you! I tried my best to fit the vibe of the restaurant with my narration and editing.
Another impressive review James, you really are quite good at this.
Thanks for taking us along.
Thank you so much, and thanks for watching!
The skimpy expensive sandwich would have ruined it for me. It didn't even look very appetizing if you want my opinion.
Thankfully, it tasted better than it looked, but if I knew how small it was I wouldn't have ordered it.
Watching from Boise in the middle of a snowstorm. Love your channel!

Thanks for introducing two resources in one video.
I’ll watch carbone next. Looks like updated versions of my childhood.

Great review. Please review the Pit in Edgewater NJ. The brisket & ribs are fabulous. So are there burgers & hot dogs.

Cucumbers New Yorkese blew me away yesterday. Also gotta get the off menu bao bun they are offering, go back for dinner!
Nice! Yeah, I'm definitely planning a return for dinner.
Portion looks good for an appetizer
Yeah, in that case it was a fair size.
It seems reasonable priced for a nice restaurant in Manhattan!

Thanks for sharing those restaurants! They sound like great establishments.
How easy was it to get a seat at the bar? Did you have to wait?
It was pretty easy. I just walked right in, but I know with dinner, there's usually a line outside before the restaurant opens for the bar.
I don't know, I would have a really hard time paying $29 for tortellini...no matter how good it is. So Torrisi or Don Angie for first time NYC visitor??
That's a tough one! Both restaurants are amazing! I don't think I can choose. If you can get a reservation for either, you won't be disappointed.
Okay thanks!!!
Marios is notable is because Mark Iacono is a fan of their pizza which is an off menu item.

Oh man what a gank move $29 gyro lol.
Yeah, that's about 3 times the price of a typical gyro in Astoria and not to mention, it's about twice as small.
I guess you are paying more for ambiance rather than portion size.
Haha! That may be true!
Wow, great looking food and I believe it tasted really good… But it’s really pricey coming from a European citizen…
Yeah, it's pretty pricey for everywhere. NYC is a great city, but the worst part is how expensive it is.
