Several years ago we went on a huge cucumber pickling binge only to realize we weren't gonna ever get to them before years past and their crispness faded. I've been thinking I should just pitch them all but now you've given me a new idea. Pickle powder!
Brilliant idea about setting the strainer up! And yes, we also rinse before putting them out now. They are really salty. Sweet chips are good, too, but the carb count jumps. I don't know if you eat popcorn ... but try the powder on that, too ! My sour kid loves it. Spears are fun, too!
Sweet pickle relish and dill relish are awesome too!! Must drain really really well tho. They re-hydrate crunchy, so good. I rinse my dill pickle chips before hand. I too have a thing about strainers and my sink.
I might try doing this. I saw that a couple other people already mentioned rinsing the salt off before dehydrating. I just thought off something. The powder might be good on popcorn!
What a fantastic idea Leisa about pickles.. I will definitely be doing that. Absolutely love your idea with the 2 strainers in the sink.. Very interesting.. We picked up a dehydrator, at a thrift shop for $50.00.. we looked this one up and it’s a $400.00 dehydrator from Cabella’s . We have used it several times but we have found that our electricity bill goes up drastically...
I did this a couple years ago with dill pickles, sweet pickles, and cowboy candy. Took them to work. Nobody really cared for dill as they were too salty, but the sweet pickles and cowboy candy were a big hit.
Canning With NicNac I’m glad you mentioned Sweet Pickles, because I am a HUGE fan. I do not care for dill pickles. I am definitely doing sweet ones now 👍
I have done that before but one thing I did do this really like is pickled hot peppers that turned out really good and you might want to try taking your cucumbers and soak them in a bucket overnight in apple cider vinegar that are all sliced up and put them on your dehydrator and sprinkle a little bit of sea salt on top of them they turn out really good the same with zucchini squash you can't stop eating take care God bless 😇
I slice cucumbers and then add very little salt along with some dill and pepper and dehydrate till crispy. They taste like pickle chips without all the salt.
Thank you!! I, too, am a freak about strainers sitting in the sink. I cringe when I see someone drain spaghetti with all of the water bubbling up around the drain under the spaghetti. Then again some in my family say I am OCD about certain things ....
Oh me, too! I saw one youtube channel that traumatized me and still does where she rinses pork chops in her sink and lays them ON HER SINK BOTTOM and one of them is even partially hanging into the drain. OMG!! I'm always looking for strainers with a high stand to keep water from the sink from getting on what's being strained. EEEEK. And I about have a stroke if anyone dares to reach over food I'm preparing. I can just picture hair and dirt falling into the food. Do you share that OCD one with me? These things keep our families healthy!
no you're not weird, I would not eat spaghetti that was drained directly into the sink! What is that about? Ajax or Comet spaghetti flavor, it's just nasty!
Hey 👋 What a wonderful idea . Look super yummy. Making dill power for Devil eggs or potatoes salad . Yummy Let us know how the large pickles work out.. what fun trying out new foods .. Thanks for sharing. Take care stay warm Blessing 👩🌾
Thank you for showing us this! I'm interested in trying it for sure......I don't do pickles but my husband would love these. I have a strainer that has its own little platform (like its higher than my other strainers) and is my favorite for that reason, lol. If I'm using a different one, then I end up holding it up until I feel like its safe to set down (only inside of an obsessively-cleaned sink 🤣).
Maybe getting whole pickles and slicing them lengthwise would make a better "chip" once dehydrated. Pickle powder...need a new spice jar filled with that! lol
Do you have a salad spinner? They work good for removing moisture. Bummer the chips didn't work out for you. It did sound good! I wonder if you tried sandwich dills, first soak overnight in water then dry in a salad spinner. 👍
Awesome, made my mouth water LOL I like the powder idea thanks Also yesterday and today is my birthday (long story lol ) finally get medicare lol and thanking God to live that long LOL Sent you a Birthday gift for my birthday it should be in your PO box today if you can't use it return it or pass it on I just want to show my appreciation for you and your efforts teaching us recipes, canning, dehydrating and many more, please keep the videos coming. Have an awesome day.
Out of curiosity, what is the metal mesh thing you have hanging over the sink at about the 54 mark? I was hoping you were going to say they were amazing.
I tried this and they were good and then 20 seconds after they hit my mouth there was an eye crossing salt explosion. I had even rinsed mine off well before I put them on the trays. I guess I will powder them in blender and use them on potato salad instead of salt. Pickle Salt. 😥 Sue

I have 2 gallons of sliced mild banana peppers that I want to extend the shelf life on, can they be dehydrated??
I might try doing this. I saw that a couple other people already mentioned rinsing the salt off before dehydrating. I just thought off something. The powder might be good on popcorn!
Oooooooooh YES on popcorn!!
Oh my goodness, I’m going to town in the morning and I’m not coming back without a dehydrator!

I dehydrate bread and butter pickles. Makes pickle candy. Bendable if you don’t rinse. Heather does these!
I slice cucumbers and then add very little salt along with some dill and pepper and dehydrate till crispy. They taste like pickle chips without all the salt.
Oh and this works great with all that summer zucchini too!!!
How creative you are! And your solution to the problem is ingenious
Hi Leisa great idea to grind up and put on the deviled eggs! 😋😋
Thank you!! I, too, am a freak about strainers sitting in the sink. I cringe when I see someone drain spaghetti with all of the water bubbling up around the drain under the spaghetti. Then again some in my family say I am OCD about certain things ....

You'll love the powder! Try rinsing the pickles and then drying them. It helps take some of the salt away! Love the video!
Great experiment. You never know how things will turn out til you try. Thanks for sharing. Take care.

Yeah the old music at the end! Ya know I wonder if soaking them would pull some of the brine out? Great idea tho using the powder on deviled eggs 😊
Very cool!!! Yeah give them a good rinse next time see if that doesnt help. Pickle powder will be awesome tho! 👏🏻❤️
Hi Leisa, love pickles any way, dehydrating them has to be good.Good idea making the powder you can sprinkle it on eggs. Sounds good🌹🌷
Never know till you try! Thanks for sharing
Would rinsing them off before dehydrating help? This is most definitely my next dehydrator experiment. My Grandkids would love these.
Love this idea.
That is a great idea for the deviled eggs, maybe mixed with paprika?
Thank you very much for sharing.
Suggestion: pre soak them in warm water for 15 min, then rinse well, pat dry then onto the dehydrator.
I did bread and butter pickles and they were good!
2leelou Preserves channel has a video where she dehydrates Bread and Butter pickles. I haven't tried it. But looks good. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, great idea I still have too many pickles from 2014.
Exactly my issue here, too.
Add the crisp powder for pickling maybe after rinsin or soak the salt out and then soak in the crisping powder
love this idea!
Got. To. Try. This!!!
That's different. I just might have to try that!!
Thank you
Interesting.

Hi Leisa! Good morning!
Love pickles. Ty. Did Phil find the Excalibur online? Or yard sales?
Pickle chips...well now that's very interesting...

I watched someone on you tube dehydrate SWEET pickles and she said it was like candy.

Long story short, you werent done yet, so they put you back for a day?
I think in the Facebook group we mentioned they should be rinsed.
i'd like these! i agree about soaking them, maybe only rinsing them would be enough.... i see experiments.. lol!
I wonder if the OVALS would work better? More size to them and rinse them😙
What if you re-hydrated them with just water. Maybe the salt wouldn't be so overwhelming? Just a thought.
Out of curiosity, what is the metal mesh thing you have hanging over the sink at about the 54 mark? I was hoping you were going to say they were amazing.

Omg!! I ❤ you for this!! Can't wait to try it.

What dehydrator are you using?
I can't seem to find a strainer like that. Can you share info on it?
Oh put the powder on popcorn or fried potatoes.
I'm just trying to make pickle stuff to put on popcorn
The salty chip would help when you have a sweet tooth craving.
Maybe sweet pickles might be better
Probably, but I can't eat them :-(
:)
