Singing like Joe Duplantier (Gojira) | The Gift of Guilt

- Short acapella cover of Gojira's "The Gift of Guilt" sung with the actual technique that Joe Duplantier the singer of the band, uses.
I've seen many Gojira vocal covers over the years, but none of them seem to quite capture the unique style that Joe does.
I think I got pretty close, but let your ears be the judge of that! Let me know which song would you like to hear next!

One thing I have been struggling with is Joe's low growls, like in the chorus of Flying Whales. Whenever I try to do a false chord on that pitch, it just ends up sounding airy and shaky, and I can't hold it for very long. And for some reason I can't seem to add compression at such a low pitch. Can you do it? If so, do you think you could try to do a tutorial on that?
The harmonies are so cool here
Heard this song for the first time about 3 days ago and i must've heard it 50 times since. This is such a good cover
OK.
DAMN! Joe's tone is tough to get but you nailed it
He is such a talented singer his style is unmatchable! Thanks for watching!

Sure thing! I'll definitely do one one day!

Amazing man!
Beautiful, man, great job! I love Gojira and Joe’s passion in his voice is something special in and of itself. What effects did you use for this, do you mind me asking?
Hey Aaron, thank you I appreciate your comment! I used a lot of FabFilter plugins. They are a great investment if you want to do some great sounding mixes or vocals. I used FabFilter Timeless delay, as well as their ProR reverb and their Compression plugin. I think there's some chorus in there but I'm not sure. These are the main plugins I use for "vocal only" videos. If I was to sing in a whole song I would add some distortion on the FabFilter Saturn plugin. The main focus should always be vocal technique. I tend to record raw, without relying on effects. If it sounds good raw, then it will sound amazing with effects.
Hope this helps :)

this is probably the only video I found that resembles Joe Dupliantier's vocal technique! Are you on Fiverr by any chance?
Hello Faraz, thank you for your comment!

Its basically early sepultura. Max did the same upfront-diaphragm pushes whilst getting some but not too much gutteral mixed in...actually, derrick green from sepultura does it too especially on roorback. And i know gojira took alot from sepultura.
There's another one that teaches you how to nail it. Look it up
Pretty impressive similarities. What's the secret to this technique? Sometimes it sounds like the vocals are just shouted very loudly like when you yell at someone very agressively. But it I think there's a fry scream within.
Intéressant
This wasn't a video, this was an out of body experience
Holy shit man glad you viewed it that way, thank you 😀
the other day her name was jesus
Great technique! Does it hurt or os it tiring? Or is it sustainable? I've been trying to learn the same technique and I'm making a little improvement over the past few days..

Τhe technique doesn't hurt it's just very tiring. It can feel a little rough if I'm not warmed up. It's very dangerous if done without warming up. Take it slow and always warm up

How
How do you do these melodic screams?
It's a bit complicated and I think it's a topic that deserves it's own video but in a nutshell I try to sing with a lot of emotion
If you have a good controlled false chord and good pitch, you can make any scream sound melodic and stay on key.
what exactly is this technique you mention
What type of vocal is Joe doing anyway? It sometimes sounds like simple yelling (a la Metallica, for ecample) but sometimes I'm like it also sounds like false chords, but yet again, there's melodic elements in it... If anyone knows this better than me I'd love to know the answer!
The technical term is false chord screaming. Joe does something in between, I think... I think Corey Taylor comes close to what he's doing. Listen to some pitched screaming he used to do on the older songs like Wait and Bleed. I think it's pretty similar to Joe's
@@leoplat8318 Hey thanks! I've been trying to learn metal vocals since about a week (so still very much a begginer) but I really wondered how what type of sound he was doing. As I said, Joe always has this melodic aspect to his screams which adds so much to their songs.
@@zynosgd9982 Joe is an amazing singer. Be careful when you try to replicate his vocals. I suggest singing clean first. Then gradually add the distortion. Try singing some Korn or something more light. The notes are lower and the grit is less.
Which are the specific techniques used in Gojira screamos?? :((
Don't know bro.. I'm not their vocalist.. I just use a technique that's similar to them. It's singing with a lot of distortion and power from the diaphragm
What's the name of that vocal technique? and where can i learn it?
It's a false chord, similar to what Corey Taylor does but with a lot more compression.
How do you get a false chord to sound so harsh? I can nail the technique, but I can never get that harsh tone.
I shouldn't really be the one to give out tips. I don't really know how this technique is done, it sort of came naturally and I trained myself to get better at it.
I sing with distortion basically. My whole larynx is involved when I'm doing this sound. The diaphragm is the power and the filter is my false chords and my vocal chords.
Maybe I'll do a tutorial one day once I get better at this technique. But be wary it is dangerous to do if not done safely. With my band Oria I don't sing that distorted.. It's slightly dialed down. But when I'm doing Gojira I try to think more about the emotion along with the technique.
Thank you very much for watching. I may do a tutorial one day. I post a few gojira related stuff on my Instagram (@leo_plat_) if you ever want to check it out 😃
@@leoplat8318 Funny enough, I was just practicing sing L'enfant Sauvage earlier today and I think I finally found a way to sound harsh without loosing control of my pitch.
Like you said, a lot of emotion puts a lot out in the vocals, but I discovered that if I add just a tiny bit of compression and reel back the false chord scream, not only does it sound better but it also gives me better control of my pitch. But not too much compression, otherwise it hurts and my voice becomes hoarse.
You truly are amazing though. This takes a lot of talent to be able to perform. I look forward to your maybe tutorial.
