I wasn't alive to see Michelangeo or DaVinci work. I didn't get to meet Bach or Beethoven or Chopin. I didn't get to talk to Newton or Einstein. BUT - I did get to see, watch, meet & talk to Virgil Donati.
I just love how Virgil collaborates with such a wide range of amazing musicians. I've listened to Feraud and Donati many times but to see these giants perform together is just astounding.
This only goes to show that Virgil's compositions can stand alone. A lotta drummers write songs thats would sound cool to plays drums over but the compositions don't translate into other versions or variations. I could hear this song being played by the London Philharmonic or a chamber version recorded for a movie soundtrack. God knows it would sound a lot better then the crap i hear as musical backdrops for a lotta movies.
? any composition, simple or complex, can be translated into a variation ( simple or complex ) if the musicians translating it are skilled and creative enough.
I just can't believe that the best most complex and skilled drummer in the world has only 21k suscribers, it just don't make sense. Virgil is the chosen one-
Your work and passion for music gives me a lot of inspiration Virgil. I hope I can make music like yourself someday once I get drums and recording equipment. Please keep it up.
Brasil BR
Virgil has some of the cleanest, most tasteful ghost notes of any drummer I know. I'm always trying to get my ghost notes to sound like his ... and I play match grip!
I have seen so far dozens of Virgil's drum vids. He is outstanding. No doubt. But he is kinda repeating himself a bit. The groove does not come from the kick. He is like more hands fixed. Then I saw his new band ice fish and guess what, he is grooving more from the kick. That is a path he should go. In "it begins" there is a short cool house/Latin stylish part where he grooves in a manner I have never seen before. Incredible groove. Completely relaxed. If Virgil could do some sort of this grooving or at least add this feeling to his current style, means playing more relaxed and not throwing all possible possibilities at the same time, that would be mind blowing. If he could just use more his ride /bell, he would get a more opening sound. Or think out of the box and use just toms instead of hihat, hihat, hihat. He has a very good tom sound. Virgil should integrate African drumming style. Mind blowing.
(Didier D'agostiino )
Absolutely Sublime!- is there a whole recorded session of this jam on DVD? - I'll buy it! hadrien and Virgil please record together! Even if it's Just you two!
Can anyone recommend a classical composer who wrote any pieces in a similar style, with sweeping legato cello lines against a dissonant arpegiated ostinato?
couple of years I think www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjhjP3fk-rPAhWKzIMKHYnmCowQFggpMAI&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.drummerszone.com%2Fnews%2Farticle%2Fartist-news-1-12945%2Fvirgil-donati-switches-from-pearl-to-dw%2F&usg=AFQjCNEd7pdfl6ySwClDZYOLQMW_HN03KA&sig2=RCthUMzBWXpLiFEFzKg1gA&bvm=bv.136499718,d.cWw

Just breath taking! HF is now one of my favorite bass players. He's a great inspiration for me.
Absolutely awesome!!! These dudes are so talented. U don't see real musicians anymore..
Doris Washington They are around.. just we look in the wrong places for them. Mainstream radio/media would never play this sort of thing!
1BassJohn U got that right they would never play them on the radio. They're way too good. Radio just seems to like the junk they now call music!!!
Amazing stuff
Gorgeous piece!

Virgil, you need to brake in with "more cowbell" with a massive solo......
