- On his way from NAMM, Federico Malaman (bass) had only and hour to kill before having to catch a plane back to his homeland, Italy. We set up the cameras, and rolled tape. We jammed on a couple of Holdsworth tunes, including this variation of Water On The Brain Pt. 2
Virgil pulls into band member's driveways with new material.
Virgil looking into their windows: I see you hiding in there!
I love the way Federico grooves along to the tune like it's a catchy pop song :)
I agree. What a monster talent.
Absolute absolute monster on bass Jesus
What is harder to solo with?
1. metronome
2. that theme
3. Virgil's trips
lol
That bass sounds really really great, and the player is also great.
what I like most about Virgil is how he pushes the other players to their potential
Federico .. one of the best bass players I've heard!!
yeah, it would be too boring for him to play with Dream Theater
Agreed, no hate on DT though.
+Alex Perevodchik With Virgil Dream Theater could change and become more. But they didn't want to.
+Alex Perevodchik Don't think so, he had a dream theater cover band
I think the same
+Guifdrums And he doesn't any more... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Those Jams are Killiinggggg!!! I,m already waiting for the next one.Virgil and Malaman totally in control, how do you guys do this????? respect both sifu.!!!

What the fuck man???!?! I'm melting in my chair here! I think you guys broke time.. :p
Only Virgil could take a Holdsworth tune and make it even crazier.
Lol who cares about time signature, this is sick
+Ross Warren
It was a compliment...
And who cares about time signatures?! For one, Virgil cares.
+arthurthegreat My bad, I know it was a compliment....just drunk when I posted that comment. Virgil has been my favorite drummer for a long time :-)

FERAS DE MAIS
Very musical. I'd like to see you do trad jazz Virgil your musicality would translate well.
I heard him playing jazz once in the live album "made in australia" on "a little something". Nice album by the way, with gambale and fierabracci ;)
Yes I remember hearing him playing swing .Is it on this same album?
It could be, you can here a little something (aha) on frank gambale's site /album.php?cd=42
Why the dislike?
Peraí que eu ainda to no 5º compasso! rs
Mortal...
virgil donati se convirtió en un antítesis en la batería complejo y posmoderno
i THINK I LIKED HIM BETTER ON PEARL HE JUST SOUNDED VERY BEEFY THAT ROAR COMING OUT FROM HIM WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK ? HIT UP ON COMMENTS
+Ash Sen For me, DW drums sound too focused. It's just different. But I like Virgil playing both DW and Pearl. Maybe it's because the way he plays and tune-ups his drums.
I think it's almost the same case as Neil Peart from Rush (if you listen to Rush). For me, Peart's DW drums sound boring now. Makes me disappointed. I liked him on Tama or Ludwig a lot better. It's just my opinion.
I want to hear Virgil playing Tama :)
The pearl drums were more tonal and fuller in sound I think. But I like Virgil on any kit, he can make any kit sound fantastic. :)
+Ash Sen Don't confuse the mix with the sound of the drums.
+David Pardy Drums At least someone understands it, thank you!
@@davidpardy mix or not I totally agree with TunggulVolt. Sorry to see Virgil falling for John Goods' mumbo-jumbo. I rather dislike the DW hype.
tasty.
Omg what I don't even
If you are so in control of your instrument, why not change mankind?
Is there anything these guys can't play?
foda
.... ha ha ; (
Absolutely incredibly brilliant talent..
absolutely HATE it.......
I can appreciate genius, but I can't stand what they're playing....
Because...?
@@ElrondHubbard_1 it's two musicians doing wayyy too much, it's not melodic and it's my personal taste, I don't like it, but that's me, they're both incredible... Donati has been one of my idols for years.....
@@shanecassar1366 that's fine. Thanks for the explanation. It's not my favorite version, but I liked it just fine. Does that mean you dislike most or all Holdsworth, as he was almost always going nuts?
I must say i don't really know what 'no melody' means. I think it might mean 'too many melodies that don't repeat soon enough' (for your taste - you were specifically subjective). If it isn't harmony, doesn't it have to be melody?
Please forgive me, i DID NOT 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦 to be a Holdsworth 'fanatic', just something i discovered one day long ago hehe.
@@shanecassar1366 it really needs Holdsworth... I'll admit that! ;D
There is no doubt that Virgil is one of the greatest 'drummers' in the world today but I have serious reservations about his musical taste, always overbearing and taking up so much space ... Playing for himself and what he can achieve rhythmically and mathematically as opposed to playing for the tune. It's getting old ...
The Avenger have you heard his stuff with Planet X and his solo record in this life? He definately has a lot of musicality in those records and has a ton of groove with lots of space. He adds in his insane technical ability in it perfectly.
Caleb Hays
Hi Caleb, yes mate I totally agree with you. This leaves me at a loss why he has seemly become even more technical in his approach... He has proven that his technical ability is beyond reproach yet continues to steamroll through some musical situations that would possibly benefit from 'less'. His work with the late great Alan Holdsworth is an example of what I'm talking about, in my opinion. There is no doubt he is a master drummer and I love him for his dedication to the instrument and how he has moved it forward, but I do have my reservations about his musicality at times. Does my opinion matter, probably not but I'm fine with that .... Nice talking to you.
job, music isn't just a bunch of rhythms (which is where this is going). Rhythm is just one element. Another one is melody, which is put far into the background here.
So it doesn't have great musicality. I completely agree with The Avenger's assessment.
@John Doh So any music that doesn't have exactly the balance between rhythm and melody/harmony that you consider "correct" is just not good music? There's plenty of music which has rhythm "put far in the background" that you wouldn't dare call "non-musical". It's a matter of musical taste where that balance is placed.
Side note: More often than not I find that people who make the type of claim that you're making are people who don't have a very developed "rhythmic ear" and so Virgil's music just sounds like "a bunch of rhythms" which probably go way over their head, and that's why they belittle the whole thing.
No, I accept a wide range of different balances. But when a core element of music is missing or really out of balance, it's not musical anymore by definition.
I cannot enjoy that as music. I can enjoy the technicality, or the rhythms, but I cannot enjoy the piece as music.
Of course there is a subjective part to it.
>More often than not I find that people who make the type of claim that you're making are people who don't have a very developed "rhythmic ear" and so Virgil's music just sounds like "a bunch of rhythms" which probably go way over their head, and that's why they belittle the whole thing.
Rhythmic ear? Sounds like a disease. xD
But you couldn't be any more wrong. I love polyrhythmic, progressive music (specifically rock and metal) and really enjoy a lot of Donati's work.
Avenger expressed it perfectly: "overbearing and taking up so much space ... Playing for himself and what he can achieve rhythmically and mathematically as opposed to playing for the tune."
If you disagree then so be it, but please keep your elitist attitude and insults to yourself. That's just childish behavior.
