  • In todays video I talk about my trusty 1951 Ikonta M medium format rangefinder camera and how it compares to the 2009 Fuji GF670. Its the battle of the super portable folding medium format camera!
I go through how a range finder camera works and compare how these cameras are similar and very different. I got my Ikonta M in 2001 and it was my first square format camera. A vintage rangefinder camera can be hard to use but I found a way to make it work....and I give some photography tips in the video as to how to get the most out of shooting a medium format rangefinder.
These folding cameras are pretty neat as objects and you'll see them on hipsters bookshelves...but they are great cameras and deserved to have some rolls of film run through them! Film photography has got more expensive, but it's still a lot of fun and if you take your time you can get great results on every roll.
UPDATE! So it turns out I shot Ikonta camera for over 20 years thinking it was a Super Ikonta... when in fact it was an Ikonta M. A viewer of the show pointed it out in a comment. Not a big deal really I guess, a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet! I find it funny that work made on this camera was in National Geographic Magazine, won a Sony World Photo Award and was in my photo book In-A-Gadda-Da-England and the whole time I was calling in the wrong name... maybe it didn't really matter ;)
I hope you enjoyed it, this is a new show and it'd be great if you SUBSCRIBED to the channel! LIKED the video or SHARED far and wide! ruclips.net/user/edthomps....

I own the Mamiya 6 KII, which is the competitor of this camera. I gotta say that these foldable cameras are really fun to own and use, since you get to shoot medium format while still being portable with good lenses.
    Happy shooting!

Quite topical for me as I've just ordered an Agfa Record iii which is a similar 6x9 camera from the same era. That also has an uncoupled rangefinder although at least the viewfinder and rangefinder are combined! Can't wait to get out and shoot with it.

It would cost more than £90 now. Needed a CLA (clean, lube adjust) at least.

I have a similar model (IKON Nettar) and the lens on that is so crisp and sharp. I paid £12 for it.

It's amazing isn't it! Such lovely things that I most see on people's shelves as they "look cool" 😎

@@PicturesOnMyMind It’s a shame, true, but it keeps the price nice and low for those in the know 😉

I suffered from dull uncoupled rangefinder but I simply invested £15 in a laser tape measure then all that was needed was to transfer the measurement from one to the other...Love Life & Unity

+JOHNNY SOLSTICE hey Solstice, any chance you can hop back in a time machine and get me one! ideally when it was my main camera so 2001 please. By 2004 I had my first ever DSLR, a Canon 20d, although I probably would have used the laser still as it sounds coooooool

Really nice video and great photography points! I once attended a Fuji GFX event and got quite bored as it was mostly gear talk, very impressive huge prints but the best was an actual parallel exhibition in the premises and I was indifferent and numb even with the GFX100II and new f1.7 lens.
14:25 🔥🔥🔥 I had to take a second look at YT as a popular "filmfluencer" posted such a video with supercars, but it was posted more recently than this video. 😂 Those clichés are getting amusing, the photography on many of those is boring, and the noverly wore off.
I would vote for the GF670 for what it is, but my wallet votes for something else. Actually ended on your video as I have a Super Ikonta IV on the way (175€ spent) to complement the Fuji GW690 I have had for 10 years. The latter is fantastic, but a large medium format that is awkward and... some of the best photos are from phones, compacts and such agile small format cameras.
Never had a Leica nor quite wanted one, medium format will punch above it technically and then it's mostly darkroom time to get good B&W prints off those. At the prices the hyped up medium format cameras are, I would rather scramble other decent models and then for 3K€ a second hand Fuji digital MF now puches very very heavily quality wise and runs without film. I am a very bag for the buck oriented person, and rather put money into continuing the photography.
There are types of photographers and "photographers", but a lot is lost without reaching the final print stage. Alas, it's a lot of talk but very little paper surface to prove some points. (few threads complaining about the price of FB paper BTW)
We might have to appreciate social media for what it does, as well as supposedly driving many to shoot, but I personally keep my photography off it.

Ah thanks for the feedback, very kind of you. Price is definitely a factor and I'm sure if I used the Fuji more I would have got more comfortable with it. Whatever camera you have it is the right camera if you really learn how to use it. Sometimes it's also fun to use cameras for things they were not at all designed! That can lead to some interesting work. I am always in awe of Weegee running around doing essentially snapshot reportage photographs with a large format camera. Incredible!

Just a heads up, what you have there is a Mess Ikonta, not a Super Ikonta. If it had a coupled rangefinder it would be a Super Ikonta. Nice camera either way.

AHH thank you! I always thought it was a super ikonta. A coupled rangefinder would have helped me out in 2001! Looking up to make the video I noticed the M on the front which made me think it was the Ikonta M 6x6. I guess I should have learned from the street photographers and spent most of my time photographing the camera itself rather than photographing with it! 😉 looks like the production year is the same, 1951-1954.
