It was just Janet. No background dancers, etc. And it really showcased her talent as a dancer. I think having Janet appear in the video solo was actually quite impactful and more 'intimate' for lack of a better word. And she's kinda kicking dude to the curb in the track so why not dance her butt off in a warehouse loft? Ha. :)
The video was about her basically dancing to express her anger from a situation , it's like when people exercise to work off steam or aggression.
The simplicity of the video is what makes it iconic. It’s just janet dancing, letting off steam. It’s an 80s dance track….
I also want to add that a lot of videos don’t match what the song is talking abt.
The pleasure principle is a song about a man wasting her time because he cared more about the material than the actual relationship. Hence “the pleasure principle” was missing.
The concept of the video is essentially Janet expressing her confusion and frustration in a safe space (the dance floor). Where you might take a drive, a walk, to clear your head, she takes a trip to the dance studio.
It also serves as a showcase for Janet’s skill as a dancer and growth as an artist. Compare this with the music video for What Have You Done For Me Lately, in a short span of time her music videos became more complex and subtle.
WELL SAID! As someone her age from that period, seeing this now moved me so much. Janet is the GOAT and the standard all the other chicks been trying to meet.
The concept of the video is the story behind the dance.

3:30 its funny you say that because janet is more of an athletic dancer in terms of doing much more styles of dancing. She does alot more floor choreo, stunts, flips and tricks so Michael was a great freestyler but Janet had alot of physical advantages in terms of dance techniques

The story is within the dance. She is blowing off some much needed steam from some personal relationship that she once was in. I’ve been there before.
The song is about a girl telling off a guy for taking her through an exciting but pointless relationship (which was all about pleasure and no deeper). She’s expressing the frustration of the song in the choreography.
It is a bad look when you swoop in wearing your critics’ hats after barely watching the video.

Even though Janet had other hits before this this was like her coming out video she killed this one of the all time favorite songs when this came out it was pandemonium
Janet was 20 years old in this video. Also, the intent of video treatments is not always meant to tell the story of the lyrics. The purpose of the video was to focus on Janet and her talents as an individual dancer. Most of her music videos show choreography with a group of dancers. This is one of the few videos she's shot with just herself showcased.
The video is about expression, releasing her emotions through dance!
She's a dance act. It's a dance song. Hence a simple dance video showcasing her alone. Not that complicated a concept lol. Most music videos aren't really a literal interpretation of the lyrics anyway tho.
The pleasure principle is a concept by Freud that opposes the principle of reason. It is related to the person simply acting in favor of what they really want, without measuring pros and cons (contrary to the principle of reason). In the case of this song, the pleasure principle consists of the woman saying goodbye to disadvantageous situations caused by the failed relationship and starting to think about herself. The music video shows Janet in a loft (where she supposedly lives) doing dance warm-ups while opening up about her dissatisfactions and about living for herself from that moment on.
My absolute FAVORITE video if alllll time. Hands down, no question.

She's telling her story of a date that went wrong through dancing in this video and this song was way before Janet became raunchy in her lyrics and videos this from Janet third album that made her a star.
This video was choreographed by the great Barry Lather who also danced in her Nasty video and with her on stage during her Control performance at the 1987 AMAS
Hey ma, u need to look up janet. She went solo in this video and in that era every girl in the world was dancing trying to jump tje chair solo in their rooms. Janets a major superstar yall. Look her up. U will see. She puts on one hell of a show too.😊
This video is iconic because it showcase her skills as a dancers. There are many videos tofay that doesn't match the Lyrical content of the song. I thought the comments made wad a bit disrespect, but if you aren't feeling the video so be it. But let's not be rude.
