The notation on the uk pattern from the 60s is 3 shillings. Before we went decimal in the early 70s our money was pounds £, shillings /-, and pence d. Hope that helps.

As an actual BIOPIC person who’s country is STILL colonized by the US, those patterns weren’t racially insensitive at all to me. Please people understand we LOVE that people wear and celebrate culture. Wearing something from another culture is NOT cultural appropriation, it’s *appreciation* . These are not caricatures of people, it doesn’t mock or demean, it does show the beauty of the garment and lovely detail which is wonderful that people see and are exposed to.
I do appreciate that you acknowledge it (but highlighting all the time it like some people do in other videos IS actually very hurtful, makes people feel “othered” when that’s not what original intent was, NOT you btw ❤)
Also, being too PC as well can be extremely insensitive because you’re looking at the other person’s skin, features, hair etc and basing HOW you treat them on those attributes, THAT IS racist. Again, I didn’t see that in this video from you, just an overall comment on how overdoing it can be worse; we are ALL unique wonderful people, curiosity and admiration for one another’s culture is a beautiful thing!

18:26 looks to be Áo dài. It is used in Vietnam. You can get fancy versions for weddings etc and simple ones for daily wear. It is also used in uniforms like school, shop assistant etc. As long as you do not do the yellow view witout the trousers (you always wear trousers or skirts under the Áo dài) or the sort pink view I think most Vietnamese would not mind. At least the Vietnamese at my high school did not mind dressing up people in it, but then we had our own traditional clothing so maybe it was an easier environment for doing that kind of stuff. The hat is apparently still in use in Vietnam, but it seems to be more a specific situation thing so I do not really know how that should be treated.

In fact, I searched for a pattern like that quite a while ago for my nieces, and ended up re-creating the design, because I could not find a pattern. I made a few in small child sizes - 3, 4. It’s 3 SHILLINGS ( old person here. Can you tell?
      Pre decimilastion.
12 pence (abbreviated as ‘d’ )ina shilling. - d stood for Denari as in Ancient Rome
      Twenty shillings ( abbreviated as ‘s’)in a pound. (£)
Mental maths was fun in those days
So one pound seven shillings and six pence would be written as £1/7/6
The pattern is three shillings zero pence 3/-
      A florin is 2 shillings - or 2 bob
A guinea is one pound and one shilling
A crown is 5 shillings, half a crown is 2/6 - two and six ie two shillings and six pence
A tanner is 6 pence- (6d) a coin worth half of this was a thrupenny bit (3d)
Half a penny was an hapenny, a quarter of a penny was a farthing
Anyway -3 /- is 3 shillings. Paper patterns were not cheap here

Ha that pricing on the uk one at 13 min in is i think 3 shillings. which we don't use any more so if you see 3/6 that's 3 shillings sixpence. That unit of currency went out at the start of the 70s so don't bother learning that. Our money is (now) in units of 100. £1 is 100 pennies (p). $1 is currently 72p. Not much to learn really other than stuff is ridiculously overpriced here because we're taxed up the backside, because island.

I’m prob going to get attacked for this - but plastic NOT sealed? I have just organised, databased (if that’s a word), and baggied all my patterns. I use the bags to contain everything when it won’t fit back, I keep the info insert out, and label the bag with tape label.

Hi Stephanie, the boys UK pattern says 3 shillings pre decimalisation when there were 30 shillings in a £1

20 shillings to the pound and 12 old pence to the shilling.

But 21? 24? shillings in a guinea. Thankfully, decimalisation happened in 1971. I do remember lots of sixpences, threepences, and shillings still in circulation up until the 1990s, though.

💜💜💜I love looking at these. How do I contact you to get the Simplicity robe at time stamp 10:58. Also, have you come across a pattern for "hostess dress"? It's like a pants set with a skirt overlay. I wear a 18/20 in today's sizes so I don't know what that would be in vintage, I'm just starting back to sewing.

I am a very tight-budgeted mom of 3 with a unique "hippie goth" kind of style who can rarely find (at least affordably. I shop a lot of secondhand sites and stores, but it seems like it's so hard to find just solid black or deep jewel tones... and if I do, they're some super expensive modern brand). I live for the flowy, romantic styles in black/deep colors that I wear and suit the FL weather so I desperately want to be able to sew but every time I have tried, the patterns didn't match my logical brain (to be fair, I'm neurodivergent) and they quickly became a mess or I felt like they were over-complicated for a simple-seeming top. I dunno if anyone might see this and have any advice for me, but I love mixing and matching certain elements like bell sleeves, babydoll dresses, maxi dresses, cold shoulder, off shoulder, etc with certain more gothic/alternative elements (I typically like simple styles and flowy fabrics just in black) and I just wish I knew where to start when it comes to sewing with these pre-made patterns. I think my problem is I always picture mixing and matching patterns or using different fabrics to create something that only exists in my head. It sucks because I got married in a black dress I swapped out last minute rather than get my original ivory dress that was beautiful, bit didn't feel like me, tailored and my husband and I want to plan a renewal in the future and I have found gowns ai would call perfect...if they were black. But I can't afford a custom wedding dress lol. I wouldn't pay what some people do for off the rack wedding dresses for one special occasion and photos. But I have so many ideas I want to make happen 😭

Simplicity 5370 is what my aunt calls a “sizzler”. A top with bikini shorts, which has elastic around the legs. Think baby diaper cover. I just got simplicty 5237 to make my daughter. That one actually calls it a sizzler.
