Lovely pattern, clear, comprehensive instructions. I had to try it immediately, done 12 rows very quickly and loving the result. I will surely make more than just one of these.
I found this was the one I’ve been looking for! I’m 76 years old but my Grandma taught me when I was 4. Now I’ve taught my daughter and 2 granddaughters. Start simple potholders and in no time you’ll be a pro crocheting this easy lovely pattern. Very nice demo & instructions. Don’t give up, it’s very relaxing!
Beautiful pattern. I ended up making many and giving them away at my daughter's birthday party. Still picture the face of the girls when they got them....priceless. It was so easy and enjoyable. TY
This is a fabulous pattern stitch for a shawl. Thank you. I’ve been looking for a simple shawl stitch and this is it. I’ve made my second in a chunky yarn and the definition of stitch is lovely. I’m hooked 🧶🧶🧶🧶
I’ve been searching for a beautiful shawl pattern for months to make for my Aunt. She’s very special to me and my family and I wanted to make one that would be as special as she is. I just found it! This is gorgeous! Thank you for sharing it with us! ❤️❤️❤️
Love this! And, I can do it. 🤗 Also, as a teacher myself (NOT crochet, LOL) I appreciate your technique. Using the needle to indicate spots precisely is incredibly helpful.
I just finished my first one! I absolutely love this pattern! I did it in Chloe from yarn bee by hobby lobby. Its beautiful! I want to try it now with a fingering or sport weight yarn. Thank you Christa for such a great pattern.
I’ve been watching videos like a crazy lady trying to find an easy shawl pattern. The increases and number of repeat rows I’ve found are too complicated to be considered easy and this IS the easiest shawl pattern I’ve found, very beginner friendly, ty for sharing!! ☺️
Christa, thank you for this fabulous tutorial. The way you demonstrate where to put the stitches and the close ups of the stitches make it look so easy. I really appreciate how much time you take to break it down. And the shawl is beautiful.
Christa your patterns and the way you present them to us are the best. I have zero issues following along with you. Thank you. I will be making this shawl as soon as my skein of ice yarn shows up. I like the size of it….perfect under a fall jacket, when you don’t want super bulky.
Christa, I made a this shawl in one weekend. I used a 4ply cotton blend for warmth. I make shawls for the Prayer Shawl Ministry and gave it to a friend at work. It turned out beautiful in a solid color as well. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this easy tutorial. Blessings from New Jersey, USA.🤗
Made this pattern in a size 2 cotton that I got as a mill end from Herrschners. One self striping cake was about 875 yds per the label. One cake made a beautiful light summer shawl (used 4.0 mm hook) measuring approx 80 inches by 38 inches. ❤ Thank you for this easy and versatile pattern!
First, did your cakes & candles blanket--loved it. Now, I'm doing this. I'm using Cotton Kings Sultan Deluxe Shine, color 8 (dark purple to yellow). I started from the outside of the first cake (purple) & and the inner of the second cake (yellow). Way cool. Thanks bunches for both tutorials. From Arizona, USA.
I've made 2 shawls following along with you on this pattern. I love it! I made them longer using about 1.3 skeins. First one with was a Mandala, and second with I Love This Yarn, in soft blue. Both came out great and were loved. Thanks, so much, for your clear instruction, that even a beginner could follow along. :)
I made this Christa for my daughter in law for her birthday, once I got the hang of it it was easy pease, will put a photo on the face book page, really enjoy making it thank you Christa its probably not as good as yours lol but I try did it a little big bigger! Hugs Liz x
Hello Christa, I'm doing your beautiful shawl "Cake and candle" for this fall! It is super easy to do and I love the design and the finally effect! Thank you for this pattern, I will send you a picture of my shawl when I finish! Happy crochet! Dani
I like the way you explain things it is indeed so simple a child could understand. Being self taught there are things that I don't know such as the "proper crochet lingo" for everything. In 5th grade I read a book and tried to do with the diagrams showed me but I've learned more from chrocheteurs who show me then from reading directions and can therefore see something and most times figure out how it was done except the more advanced intricate things. Due to that I can't always teach nephews and nieces, sisters in law and younger cousins the names for things. About all I can do, is say "this is how you do this, so do this, and then...". So now you have helped me with words and motions to de-frustrate it for them (me too). Thank you.
Hi Johnnie, Thanks! I have a written pattern with instruction details on my website.🌈🙋🏼♀️🌺secretyarnery.com/collections/clothing/products/cakes-candles-1-ball-shawl

Thank you for this! And if I wanted it less dense / more lacy, I’d do the cluster as dc ch dc ch dc ch dc - that makes it even lighter if you’re in warm weather and doing this for the look more than the warmth!
Love this pattern and you did a great job on the tutorial. I immediately put aside what I was working on, grabbed a Mandala cake and started making one!
Pamela Smith I did the same exact thing when I saw this! I did mine in the Mandala color way Unicorn and it looks great! The next one I work up will be in the color way Genie!
Mary Ann Allencourt I used a 5mm and it turned out pretty, but if you’re not liking how it’s looking with that hook size then you should go up to a 5.5mm and see how that looks.
This is exactly what I was looking for ty. I have one skein of Mandalla sparkle. No idea what I was thinking when I only bought one. This is the answer to that question.
Love this, Christa! Thank you! I didn't see the timing stamps (?) but I love that you do the timing stamps!! They are SO helpful! I think I will make one of these to donate to a local Nursing Home. :)
Yay for cakes and candles! I finished my beautiful lacy shawl and I am so pleased! Thank you! I see you have a square version of this pattern. How about a rectangle pattern for a scarf or throw?
Hi Christa...I am a new subscriber. I am so delighted with the clear way you show how to count stitches and where exactly to place the hook. That always confuses me although Grandma taught me to crochet long ago and I muddle through okay on simple projects. I really love this little shawl. And....its nice to have a pattern if you have a small ball of yarn. How would you go about making this stitch in a square blanket shape? Your pretty and colorful patterns are very exciting. Also, I am proof a lefty can easily knit and crochet right handed. That was the only way folks could teach me and it's always felt natural. Linda🐇
Ive seen Ice yarn but not invested thought into it...I think I need to! I just learned to crochet; Im a knitter & already lost my hook somewhere...I forsee myself loading this video a couple times, thanks for creating this! Edit: Ive loaded this video atleast 8 times, my end product is lovely!

What size did you end up using with Mandala? I'm using 5 mm but not liking it... may go up to 5.5.
Mary Ann Allencourt I used a 5mm and it turned out pretty, but if you’re not liking how it’s looking with that hook size then you should go up to a 5.5mm and see how that looks.
