I lived in Monsey for about 30 years. I am 99% certain that I know Talia Leibov's (aka Julia Haart's) parents. Her father is Mikhail Leibov. They emigrated from the USSR to the United States about 1970. Talia was an infant or a toddler at the time. Her parents became Orthodox I believe when she was a child, maybe age 10. Her parents were very affluent and she grew up in a million dollar McMansion in Monsey and her home life was religiously fairly easy going, far from being a fanatic fundamentalist cult. So much for reality TV. Basically the show seems to be merely documenting one woman’s really extreme midlife crisis.
I think it’s weird that they set this up as a kind of ‘debate’ between Allison and Abby. Both had very valid and very different points. Neither was arguing that the other’s story shouldn’t be told. Both are important. The point is that positive stories should ALSO be told and not silenced by networks.
For every individual who leaves, there are 2 that come back. I personally went to several yeshivot where my fellow students came from non-religious households, some where abusive and others were not. I must have met over several hundred people who have positive experience coming to Judaism and live beautiful lives. They never feel the need to justify themselves. The most vocal ones who who are on the other side of the aisle usually take up very extreme views like Eve, Julia, and the writer of unorthodox. They all feel the need to justify themselves to non-jews who shouldn't care. It says a lot. In Judaism we learn that it is not up to us to be accepted by other nations and that we should just do us. Those who try to assimilate will fall sooner or later. You will see this with the three women I mentioned.
The issue with the Julia Haart story is that now it has come out that she not only lied about her past and how she got where she is today religiously, she also lied about her past and her path in business. She continued those lies in her book--people came out of the woodwork to say she was a liar because the lies made the community look bad. Then she went on a book tour and continued to tell more lies. And now she is even being sued by her ex-husband and the company she told everyone she was President of (the board forced her out). So, to the outside world, she is just reinforcing the stereotype of being a lying, greedy Jew. Thanks a lot, Julia.
I think it's weird that neither of people like Abbey and the reporter guy did NOT watch my unorthodox life when trying to have a debate on something you have not seen?
Why is Netflix so interested in this anyway? One woman's journey to kiss up to trash......traded a life of good friends and family and ability to further herself in any career she wants for a life of fraternizing with women who prance around naked.....what kind of advancement is that? Not like she began working for doctors without borders.....she went to work with models....the lowest of the low........I just don't get it.....and she speaks of her pursuing her career......she advanced through the oldest trick in the book.....SHE MARRIED IT......that's all she did!!!!!
What the (rhymes with plan) person is essentially saying: "I want to do what I damn well please." Fine, it's a free country. Do what you please." But don't say you are representing Jews or Judaism.
It is an anti-religious bias among certain parts of the mainstream media / entertainment industry period. What I see is a lot of ridicule and sometimes hatred towards religious people in general. This most definitely includes religious, orthodox Jews. Unorthodox is just the latest part of this anti-religious campaign. I 100% support the right for anyone to be a part of any religious community and worship as they want. Or not worship as they want.
I think what Julia says is outrageous, slanted. she and Silvio are divorcing and it will be made evident it wasn't her money who got her in that position at elite. It was Silvio's company-
I think Julia was talking about her personal experience which is not the same experience of all Orthodox Jews every community there is extreme I know something about that There are similar problem with the conservative traditionalist Muslims.
You haven't seen more books Bec normal people aren't interested in making their lives only the next netflix drama. Its only those looking for the attention they crave. If you even notice in the Jewish community it's usually people writing about other people......very rarely about people trying to posture themselves
I saw the series and I believe Julia has been deeply hurt by her community and family, which has resulted in her completely and totally walking away from her Jewish identity. That is what saddens me. Not that she walked away from her community …certainly there are different ways of expressing or living your faith. But Julia has abandoned her religious beliefs and says so…What’s more even encourages her children to follow suit and that is the biggest danger….hence her comments or actions are toward denigrating living in a more orthodox way. She associates Judaism with pain due to her experiences ..She needs a lot of healing and it will take time…
What are you talkin about that they are leading very happy lives if you knew what was going inside them trust me anybody that has a half brain knows that they are extremely unhappy and they are only trying to justify in their own mind they're very very sick lives
I have a lot of respect for both your and Abby Stein's sincerity and efforts and story, and think you both made solid points. I'm not a fan of this new series based on what I'm hearing but look forward to taking a look. I think the media has no obligation to make us look good any more than they have an obligation to make us look bad. The stories have to be compelling: Shtisel does that apparently. Yay for us. Thanks for posting this discussion.
Dear Alison you have an issue with the media. Contact a24films.com/about I'm sure they'll be happy to produce an indie film about your narative. We need all stories. Just keep in mind the story of ex Jews will always sell better. Not because an agenda simply because a person breaking away from religion and losing their faith if you will has got much better ups and downs and transformations as oppose to selling happy and satisfied frum Jews or someone finding their way... That's just an objective fact of film. Nothing to do with a bias or whatever you're blaming hollywood for. If you think they'll ever change the narrative keep dreaming... DIY

Why can’t they also tell the stories of those who are born into Orthodox communities, are in healthy communities, and stay?!
If I may chime in, I’d like to see a show about a baal tshuvah.
So would I, but I'm waiting for someone else to do the work. :)

It's only good for Netflix if it is anti Jewish.

Shalom all I Love Jews

Very brave and insightful. Thank you Alison
Great discussion. I'm a Christian Protestant from London UK who'd like to convert to Haredi Judaism. Shalom ✡️🕎
Thank you for speaking out. You did such a good job. It was so clear and to the point. You definitely won that debate😆
Let THESE "BRAVE" leftists do a real show of Muslims leaving Islam. Crickets crickets crickets.
Talking about such things can be very helpful if continued in a positive vibration. ☮️
Extreme biased focus on a group without any unbiased focus, is clearly a form of hate.

I am jewish and this community does not like having the good and bad depicted and problems we face.
I wish they would have let you speak more.
I do not think Julia is for real. She is following a script for Netflix. She is successful Thanks to her Jewish rich background.
Stein is making such a chilul Hashem befarhesia! And so is this new Netflix show! Just sickening!

Allison God bless you for everything your doing for Klal Yisrael!!!🌹

As a Christain I am concerned about this trend! And will be praying to OUR G-d for guidence.

good and bad must be told in all walks of life
why can't see she look into her own religion , not reform , whats real and see what she's talking about herself. instead of writinhg all that drivel!
netflix did it three times.
The stories need to be truthful. The show is anything but
Good work countering the bias!
Way to go, Abby!
