Isnt it obvious from their mothers behavior that shes unhinged.....i had heard that about her living in Atlanta. People saying they felt they could be 'friends' but had to keep their distance.......long before any religious issues that anyone would know of even arose. I think it was clear by her demeanor through the years that she was unstable.
I think it's beautiful that Sheva is sticking by her Mother and sister and not letting them go out into the modern world alone. I suspect it's a protective action on Sheva's part. Like she is watching out for her Mom and little sister.

Either their father has become less observant from the previous lifestyle they grew up with, or tales of how strictly religious they were are greatly exaggerated. I think they were exaggerated - a little digging shows you how Miriam played competitive sports in a modern Orthodox high school, and even pics from Batsheva's wedding shows Julia in a form fitting dress with lots of makeup - far more "modern" orthodox than orthodox
