Anyone who has yet to play this game - be warned, it sucks hundreds of hours of your life into a black hole. But, I always come back for more! So satisfying improving traffic flow for some reason :-)
My tip would be to place dirt roads first (even on the freeway connection), it's the cheapest road, so if you make a mistake you can demolish it no worries about money. It's also fine to keep the roads dirt until your first milestone, that's usually when I start upgrading the roads. The only limitation with dirt roads is that you can't make tunnels out of dirt roads, only bridges. But usually when I need to tunnel, I'll be at a milestone, or have enough money for normal roads anyway.
I did not start my first city by building another interchange after the one provided at the game start. I continued the road as an expressway with no zoning on it. But I did leave plenty of undeveloped corridor space to later build it to a freeway design, starting from the original T-interchange. Much later on, upon buying more surrounding land parcels, the original game supplied T-interchange got rebuilt to a full 4-way interchange with fly overs. Also, my arterial road intersection spacing and freeway interchange spacing are much greater than whats shown here. Distances between arterial road signalized intersections is at least 4x what was shown here. Then often use a 4-lane (2lanes each way) wide road segment to act as an entrance or a collector road to a neighbourhood from the arterial. Then 2-lane local roads (1 lane each way) within the neighbourhood. Rarely do I connect the small 2-lane roads directly to the 6-lane (3 lane each way) roads. Neighbourhoods are built as cells to prevent community vehicle traffic shortcutting. But pedestrian trails provide shortcuts for people to get from inside the community to the main roads where commercial stores, offices are located and buses are running. Elementary schools are built in the neighbourhood, not on a arterial road. Distances between an interchange on ramp and the next off ramp on my cities are much greater, about 400m with an added auxiliary weaving lane between the ramps. The ramps are built long enough to allow vehicles to exit at 100km/h then transition to 80km/h then widens out to 4-lanes for turning movements at 60km/h at the signal intersection. This makes for smooth traffic flow at high speeds. Exit ramps are either single lane or 2-lane at the gore diverge point. (The gore zone is where the ramp physically splits off from or onto the freeway mainline).
@@Hu1ud Thats what I was thinking watching this, I was told in another video you don't want to place intersections too close, which this build does for funsies
I've not played this game in forever, and I remember starting a city being the hardest part. This video helped me barely make it to the first milestone, which got me a cash bonus which let me keep going. Thanks for helping me waste all my time! (I mean it, I love this game, just haven't played it in years!)
I like this interchange. Nice and simple. Doesn't use too much room. But better to build it closer to the middle of the tile and spread out from there. That way the traffic can spread out in all directions.
One suggestion is if you make the narrow blocks 11 units wide and 22 units long you'll get the maximum efficiency out of your water pipes (one pipe every 2 short blocks or 1 long block) AND have space available for alleys, back garden paths, etc.
Wide or tight diamonds with 2 signalled intersections and 4 ramps are the simplest space saving interchanges for urban areas. Modifications of it include the single point interchange that has 4 ramps but one single signal over/under the freeway, or the 4-point wide diamond which has 4 ramps and 4 signalized intersections, usually located at a pair of intersecting one-way roads or a divided road that speads out wider at the interchange. Another modification has round abouts instead of signals at the ramp intersections. But at start of game play, I do not spend money building any interchanges. The point is to develop your city in step with demand. Budgets are tighter at the beginning of the game, which is also true of any real life community or project, and there are occasional recessions in the game where there is little or no demand for development growth, meaning you still have expenses to pay for, but little ability to gain new revenue. You want to minimize any throw away costs when building your roads or infrastructure too. Building then destroying over and over to get something right wastes money and time. My advice to the perfectionists at start of game play is to get things to a reasonable functional standard first while your budget is limited, and later when revenues are higher, then go back and look at making things perfect or upgrading. But obviously, try to build it right the first time without having to demolish or replace is the best strategy. Its how things get done in the real world. A big TO DO is pick your ultimate road width first. DO NOT start with a small 2 lane wide road and develop all along it, then decide later to widen the road to 4 or 6 lanes wide. All your developed buildings will be lost and your civic infrastructure buildings will have to be relocated. Note that things like grave yards and land fills are very difficult to deal with after they are filling up.

KoopaTheTurtle I could tell you a in game mod or if you know it it’s called infinite money never runs out you just go to content manager and add unlimited money and you don’t need to be sad
The diamond interchange is too close to the T-bone interchange. Give your cims at least two nodes of straight road for lane changing between interchanges. Also, you don't have to build the diamond interchange first thing. Just save space for it for when you've got more money. Build a 4-way intersection at first, which will last you at least a couple of milestones. Heck, you don't even need paved roads to start with. Gravel works fine for a hamlet.
This is a good start and offers enough space to upgrade work the layout of your main roads before things get hairy. Personally, I think it looks nice so that's a win. If I was using this starting layout, I would turn it into a cash cow to fuel a more intricate design district :)
This is a solid starting design but could lead to traffic issues down the road (har har). If you rotate the blocks so that they intersect with the main road every 20 units instead of every 10, you will have the same effect, but with fewer traffic issues later as your arterial road will be less clogged.
Just an advice for anyone reading me, not for mod player 😄 & if u wanna take thing naturally: Zone slowly & little by little either for Resi,Comm or factories. I zoned for 5 houses(low+high), 1 comm, 3 factories+1 or 2 offices by every month in-game time. So my population growth is balanced. This method especially works very well for residential, greatly decrease the effect of DEATH WAVE. In the same time u'll see great amount of your population, because the houses are developing very well. When death wave can be controlled, ur hearses can reach those houses right in time, death wave will not be a problem anymore. If everyone is dying inthe same time, hearses will not reach them fast added with traffic & that will slow down population growth. It might take very slow & longer time but eventually u can happily manage ur cities.
Nice, I usually have the habit of adding a roundabout at the entrance to the map, but it gets jammed later in the game. Thanks for the ideas for a town on the main road man. Ich merke, dass ich doch nicht so gut bin, als ich dachte (und ich dachte, dass ich schon sehr schlecht war)

The best way to build a city without traffic is roundabout and more road choice. If you have a map that have 2 high way, don't connect it you should make a road for them because they will use your high way for shortcut, make traffic stuck.
I don't recommend you to start city with this junction, it looks nice but will cause traffic very soon. Use ones where cars don't need to cross lines and there are no traffic lights.
Kristiano Bertucci I see what you mean but, if you expand you land you have more natural spawned highway which you can make into your city entrance so to stop the traffic just make about 5 city entrances (Mind: Sorry that was bad😂!).
It's not very good idea to face growable buildings and facilities to big roads - it will generate extra traffic in future. Place buildings mostly on short dead end streets and leave some room around supposedly busy intersections - you might need to upgrade them to roundabouts later. Place industry and cargo stations on one way slip roads far enough from intersections to prevent traffic jams. Make some room between buildings, i.e. 4 units zoned, 2-3 units empty, and so on.

Starting out first thing a rookie should be doing is placing electricity and water pump/sewage. Cant count how many fresh start layouts I ruined because I forgot to save some cash to build those, and ended up with beautiful empty roads and no people populating the city for what seemed like years of debt to make up for that initial oopsie~
you got a new sub! i re-started playing this after 2 years and mostly forgot all commands and tricks LOL, anyhow, could you pls post your mods list so i can get up to date? THX
I have no idea how to gate this Cities: Skylines Software. Do you help me who to Download this Cities: Skylines. I have try it many time for Download it but can't.
Your comment is 8 months old so maybe you've figured it out by now but for a city of that size public transportation is key. Get a good subway system going. Build a bus depot and set up some lines but turn the bus budget down to 50% otherwise you'll just add to the traffic problem. Depending on what DLC you have, trolleys and monorails have helped alot also. If you're on PC get the traffic mod.
Eh, you shouldn't have access to those road types from the very beginning unless you've downloaded mods to bypass that intended game mechanic. Feels a bit like a cheat code to have them all unlocked from the outset.
Anyone who has yet to play this game - be warned, it sucks hundreds of hours of your life into a black hole. But, I always come back for more! So satisfying improving traffic flow for some reason :-)

I have the same problem in Tropico 6. Sometimes, it just won't let me connect one road intersecting another to make an intersection.
Witch color correction do you have can you make a video in that
How in the world do you work that Curb Mod? Your curbs really stand out!
Nice little town :)
I'm fairly new on this game, so there are some things i don't master yet, but your video give me some good ideas ^^
Last time I checked the game you don't get 1-way roads until the 1st milestone so... kinda unhelpful?
how do all your buildings have pavement? There is only grass on my plots ._.
nice start
should have named the video "how to pass out because you drank to liters of horsepiss yesterday"
What application are you using
You should do a video showing us the mods that you use and the mods that you recommend.
Love your video
What skin did you use for the roads?
What is the upper limit of the intersection you made?
you got a new sub! i re-started playing this after 2 years and mostly forgot all commands and tricks LOL, anyhow, could you pls post your mods list so i can get up to date? THX
tbh, I never know what the heck to do about connecting the existing highway to my city, so...this is a good suggestion. lol

My city is the the worst city ever made in City Skylines, but... the traffic flows brilliantly and It's very easily accessible.

Did not work for me somehow. No Buildings were built in the industrial zone whysoever.
Nik Zingg was there demand for industrial
Can you make a tutorial showing how to resolve the traffcit on cities starting from 30k of population?
Your comment is 8 months old so maybe you've figured it out by now but for a city of that size public transportation is key. Get a good subway system going. Build a bus depot and set up some lines but turn the bus budget down to 50% otherwise you'll just add to the traffic problem. Depending on what DLC you have, trolleys and monorails have helped alot also. If you're on PC get the traffic mod.
Eh, you shouldn't have access to those road types from the very beginning unless you've downloaded mods to bypass that intended game mechanic. Feels a bit like a cheat code to have them all unlocked from the outset.
What is this app?
Çok güzel sakin bir kasaba oldu. 🤩👍
Are you using mods?
