Jane Eyre is one of the most brilliant love stories I have ever read. Charlotte Bronte was a genius

I know your comment is old, but I just finished reading it and I am greatly puzzled. I couldn't put the book down for the past week and I adored almost every part of it. However, after ending it, I saw there was a "notes" section and there, it stated that Brotë put many allusions to sex and female sexuality in the book and that kind of spoiled it for me because I thought jane was so pure... Did you notice any sort of sexual allusions while reading it? Specially in the first chapters. The "notes" part said that the flogging of the children at Lowood was a way of expressing the sexual fantasies of the time... Isn't that wrong?

Jane Eyre is one of my all-time favorites. I read it for the first time when I was 14 and it had a HUGE impact on my reading and writing habits and the tastes I developed for future books. I know it's another long one and maybe you've already read it, but I would love to know what you think of Wuthering Heights by Charlotte's sister, Emily. Sometimes I wonder what it was like growing up in the Bronte house that the three sisters wrote such...gothic stories... Anyway, it's difficult to explain to people who haven't read it how amazing Jane Eyre is and so I was extra happy to see your review!

I read Jane Eyre when I was 16. I was never a good or fast reader but I read it in five school days. I just couldn’t put it down despite my dislike of reading in general. I hadn’t seen any film adaptation, I could feel a deep sense of darkness when reading it. The 2011 version was the best for me. It showed exactly how I imagined the story.

Jane Eyre is one one my favorite books ever!!! I knew since the beginning that it would be a book that I would adore. I don't know how to explain it well, but when I first read the synopsis I felt a shudder running through my whole body haha... So, when I started reading this I couldn't stop. I wasn't a good reader at that time, I confess, but Jane Eyre has such a fascinating story that I couldnt left the book behind. The words were kinda difficult to me. I mean, I read it in Portuguese, because this is my mother tongue. I bet reading this amazing and brilliant book would be perfect in English, however, my English level doesn't allow me reading classics. Well, I wanna praise you for your amazing review aaand besides that I LOVED your accent. :)

I first read "Jane Eyre" in high school and was fortunate enough to be in my second year of French, so Adele's dialogue added to my enjoyment rather than detracting from it. However, it can be maddening to run into passages rendered meaningless by lack of translation, so ... the Internet to the rescue! Did you know that skidoo.com hosts English translations of all of Adele's French? Since URLs are no-nos in RUclips comments, just google "translation of french in jane eyre." That's the ticket!

Nice use of Hitchcock there. That film traumatized me xD I adore this novel. It was my first Bronte book, wow, 9 years ago. I'm still young, but now I feel so old, and feel like I need to give Anne more of a proper shot (I have her books, but she's the only Bronte I haven't read yet). To my bookshelves!!

I kept a diary with sentences and phrases that I found uniquely written or just beautiful in structure- choosing 8 to 10 per read. Jane Eyre........ I needed to enter the entire first two pages. I was "hooked". I t was a marvelous read to the finish-her vocabulary and verbiage were captivating.

Loved this book! Once I finished it I was shocked that many of my classmates felt opposite, like we had read completely different books--they just don't appreciate good literature. And on another note, yes, knowing French helped, though Adele mostly talked of presents and wanting to look pretty.

Absolutely! I really enjoyed this review because you focused more on the feelings this book gave you and not over-read and over-analyze things in there. I am just wary of those trying to designate symbolism where there shouldn't be. It's better to keep things simple, then. I am looking forward to your other videos. Subbed to you right away. :)

Right after I read Jane Eyre last year and loved it, I read Persuasion by Jane Austen, that one is just as good as Jane Eyre. Persuasion is leaps and bounds better than Pride and Prejudice, and shows a much more mature Jane Austen. You should read Persuasion next!

The only thing I didn't like about Jane Eyre was St John's self-sacrifice.
I can't quite explain it. I'm an atheist, so I felt really sad when he gave up on his love, because he felt he needed to answer to a higher calling. I mean YOLO.
But I was very impressed by his dedication and selflessness. I wonder if he would have made the same choice if the religious factor was removed.

Before you read Wuthering heights you should listen to the Kate Bush song of the same title because it is quite appropriate to the tones of the book and the lyrics are almost like quotes.

Hello Barry, I have been watching your videos for as long as they have been on RUclips, you do an excellent job. Your career choice should be on TV. I have two books I would like to recommend but they are a bit different from ordinary classics. Number 1 "Alone in Berlin" by Hans Fallada, one man and his wife's resistance to the Nazis during WW2. Number 2 "Boy's Life" by Robert McMammon. It is a fantasy novel set in Alabama in the early '60's about an 11 year old boy and it's not for kids either.

I want to read this book, but I am terrified that I might quit it. I tried to read it a while ago, got a bit into the beginning, and let it go completely. I am trying to pick up reading and am even going to participate in the BookTube-a-thon. My question is would this be a book that requires a certain amount of reading stamina? I imagine such a classic isn't for people who are trying to pick up reading.
LOVED your review! You definitely had be interested!! Thank you!

Heeey, challenge yourself with some Russian classic O_o "Master and Margarita" is woven around a visit by the Devil to the fervently atheistic Soviet Union, and it's just fantastic. Really crazy, really fun, you won't be able to work out does it offend the religion or support it, and it is good for every age and every generation.
Nikolai Gogol can be interesting too. Just out of the top of the head "The Night Before Christmas", "Taras Bulba" (about kazaks, kind of sad)
Thanks for the review, I'm definitely subscribing n_n

In reply to your comment regarding the lack of French translation, I think some copies have a translation because in my copy of the book, at the back there is a section titled "notes" and it states the page number, the french sentence and the translation. :)

Besides, in the "notes" of the version I read, it said that Bertha was the way she was because of how rochester treated her and basically said that he was not a complete victim- do you agree?

    • @bookhunterrr3973

@@claudiabenedito2928 Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea may have the answer to this question. I have yet to read it myself, but at this point, i can only see the goodness in Mr. Rochester. Yes, he is flawed as he himself is supposed to be a Byronic hero, but the fact that he was firm in taking Bertha with him in Thornfield, under his care albeit through Grace Poole, is touching and is reflective of his good heart. he could've left her in the care of her family and totally erased her from his memory. But he did not. This is me speaking with a first-hand (ish) experience of having the responsibility of taking care of a mentally-ill person at home. i have seen and listened to the heart-breaking pains and difficulties of a friend on taking care of her mentally-ill relative. Also, this good-heartedness of Mr. Rochester can be seen in his taking over of Adele's guardianship and making sure everyone is out of the house and trying to save Bertha during that tragic fire. A stark contrast to that vexing character of Mr. Rivers, in my opinion.
