These videos are simply excellent! I love the way they are made, from the view in the saddle going down the road, to the camp set up and everything in between. Reminds me of why I am in the middle of my own R65 restoration and the road trips I also hope to make. I might even forgo the motel and get back to camping again since Ian makes it almost look fun again. Just like back in my 20s. Thanks, Ian! And please, keep the video’s coming. I tend to binge on them..!
I just found your channel this morning by accident. This is a fantastic video with a nice blend of narration, actual motorcycle riding noises, and wonderful footage.
I never watch videos this long but your channel is an exception. As someone who is trying to recreate a pre smartphone era lifestyle again, this feels like home. Greetings from India
It is nice on trips like these to stuff the phone out of sight, but I still use it for maps and music. :) It’s nice to have it on you, but not really have to look at it much though!
Quite nice bendy country roads, and freely floating traffic; didn't expect that in the US. Smooth, effortless riding with the Boxer, totally as expected.Well done.
Ian, what a fun video. I did motorcycle camping in the late 70’s thru the 80’s. Retired this year and still ride a lot. Don’t camp anymore but still take road trips alone. Glad I found this. Reminds me of my days on a KZ900 doing what you’re doing. Stay safe out there.
Stellar work, getting the notification of a new vid of yours was the highlight of my day! Love the format, style, camera work, everything. Top notch stuff!
I logged a lot of miles on a ‘83 R100RS. The sound of that airhead brings back lots of good memories. Love the Krauser bags too. Moved on to BMWs after years of riding HDs. Didn’t know motorcycles could handle so good 😊. Traded the RS and a ‘88 K75S in on a K100RS-4V. ‘91 I think.
When I first put the bags on my bike I thought they looked kinda goofy and too big, but honestly they're so convenient I could never take them of now haha. Love 'em. :)
That trip looks much different from the vantage of a minivan on the turnpikes. Many thanks for showing us a better view of Americana. Look into carrying a Tenkara rod and an Altoid tin of flies for catching dinner! SNP is a great place to become a better fisherman.
I was born and raised in Lorain County Ohio and have been to Findlay State Park literally a million times. It was the go to fishing spot for ease of use. Camping in the winter was always fun. My brother still ice fishes there every winter. Safe journeys.
I was going to comment on the lack of evidence of regular maintenance on your bike and then I saw a previous post where you said you had the heads off. I know that's not the focus of your channel, but some brief insights as to what it takes to keep an airhead running (I have a '77 R100) might be interesting. I also appreciate your philosophy of riding where you are on trips you can work into your schedule, rather than epic adventures to exotic places most of us will never see. I did live in Ohio for a period and one of the few things I miss is the well-kept rural countryside. Beautiful in and of itself. Keep up the good work and thanks for the effort to publish your videos.
Oh I spend a lot of time doing work on the thing that’s for sure haha. Oil and valves every 5k, most other fluids every 10, tires, bearing greasing, carb cleaning, etc etc. but I look after her and she looks after me. :)
Thanks Ian. Really enjoying these. I’ve always liked the R65…. While many considered it to be an underpowered R80, I saw it as being “just enough”. Perfect for riding at a speed where landscape and journey could be appreciated.
I completely agree! I don't have any need for speed, personally. I enjoy taking in the view more than going anywhere in a hurry haha. I'm an old man at heart.
As I was randomly watching your video, i was surprised to see you stopped in my home town of Tecumseh. I'm glad you liked it. Btw, us locals pronounce it Tee-Come-See. I know the correct way is suh at the end but no local says it that way. Great video, thanks.
I just love the sound of that boxer engine. I have a '76 R90/6 that I stripped to the frame and rebuilt. I get it out occasionally. I've never tried to do a long trip on it, but that sure looked like fun. Your video was very well put together, and the editing was great. Keep doing what you're doing.
You should do a trip on it! Especially if you’ve rebuilt it, it deserves to stretch the legs. :) Even if it’s just a weekend, 200 miles somewhere and back.
Awesome Ride, Glad I discovered an underrated channel , i would love to travel America's country roads and towns one day, brings such a good vibe to it. Love from India❤
i live here in the philippines. i can relate much on this kind of riding plus the bonus of being present with the family. i enjoy this beautiful motovlog.
Greetings from Grand Rapids. I can relate to the joy of traveling on an old airhead. I get out on my '73 short wheelbase R60 toaster when ever i can and always on the rural back roads. I hope you have many more getaways in the future.
It’s a great town! We went to Max’s South Seas Hideaway one night (lol I know I know) and there was a Phish concert on, so the town was…full of characters! Ride safe. :)
Great video and beautiful country ! Watched this on a nice morning with some chai. Life is good! Makes me want to start this yearly tradition of visiting family on my Moto.
Your trip reminds me of my trips. I have a 03' BMW R 1200 CL that hums along 300 miles a day for that secluded camp ground to pitch a tent and build a fire. My meals are usually freeze dried in a bag, granola bars and gas station sandwiches. Although I'll stop at a bar & grill or a family restaurant a few times. Motels are an option if the price is right and it's ground level with a door. I just got back from a 2200 mile trip to Colorado and back. My wife lets me go because she says I need to get it out of my system. This is my 4th western trip from Illinois since getting back into motorcycles. I've learned to take it easy, stop often and enjoy the views. No more 600 mile days and interstates. I noticed you were fishing and reminds me I forgot to take my compact fishing outfit. Really enjoyed your video.
Ah that all sounds great. I get your wife's feeling of getting it out of the system. When you're home, the itch just keeps getting stronger til you can get out again. :)
Really enjoy your travels through the states, we don’t have so far to wonder here in the UK. That trip would have taken me to my family’s home in Ireland and back to London.
Hello from Mexico, dude I love your videos. You should do a video of your gear, would love to do a trip one day like you man keep the video coming plis.
Honestly I don't have all that much gear to present! Though I guess that could be the point. I try to pack pretty light and keep it simple, that's part of the joy for me. :)
Man this is great. Also: we have the same tent and sleeping pad. My bike's a bit newer ('24 F900 GS) but I ride the same way. As little highway as I can, on the lookout of interesting roads and places to stop.
I love my little Lunar Solo. I got it for bikepacking initially but it’s so small and convenient I just started bringing it with me for these trips too. :)
Piece of cake 🍰 a walk in the park. From your house hilly regions while scenic off interstate produce higher rainfall. Safe travels in USA 🇺🇸. Europe awaits or Winnipeg in January if really insane. Have fun.
Hello, great Video. I'm a bit jealous because over here in Germany traffic is more crowded and it seems you're able to drive miles without stopping... Your R65 looks similar to my R45 (with sidecar) from 1982. Even the sound of the fuel switch is the same. Great video! Wish I could make it to the US and driving tours like you've done. Gruß von Ralf
See I'm jealous of your location, because in the time it takes me to go from DC to Michigan, you could get to France, Italy, Czechia, so many places! I'd love to do a big Euro road trip one of these days. :)
I saw you filled up with low 89 octane gas. Do you ever use the high 93 octane gas? I have a '79 R45 and I remember seeing a label somewhere to use the higher octane stuff. I live in Spain and I've been on a few long trips. Barcelona-Santander then ferry to Plymouth. the all round the UK to the Start of northern Scotland and back. Another year a trip to Ireland. Same route but detoured to ferry to Cork and the Beara Peninsula and up to the Northern counties border and back. Wonderful memories. 30 years later I'll be taking the same steed around parts of Spain that I haven't been to. Great filming and storytelling on this and your other vlogs. Godspeed, Ian!
To be honest, I used 87 for the longest time and never had an issue with pinging, even on hot days. I’ve switched over to the midgrade stuff recently just to be safe, but I think on an engine with like 9.2:1 compression, 93 might just be overkill. Those trips sound amazing, I go back to visit family in Ireland fairly often and I’d love to ride there, despite the rain. :)
Hi , your vintage Beemer looks nice . I'm traveling on a 21 F 750 GS right now . went through Kentucky and Tennessee camping at KOAs . In Ohio right now. Going to Southern Ohio and camp there in a couple days. Then off to BMW Motorrad Vintage Days in Alabama at Barber. I went last year for BMWs 1st held in North America. They enjoyed it so much their coming back this year . Me too 😊 Ride safe.
Oh yeah, I see your picture! It’s a great spot, I stop there once a year usually. Such a nice lake. Also I love “Backroads Pizza 2,” always makes me chuckle haha
I love your movies, and whole approach to capturing the experience. Deceptively simple, and organic. Thank you for sharing. I am curious what you use for navigation. There does not appear to be an outboard GPS anywhere in sight?!
Thanks, I try to keep things simple. :) And I use Google maps, avoid highways most of the time. I just turn on the audio instructions and connect it to my comms unit. I've got a Sena to play music and stuff too, the driving instructions are really good to be honest!
Great trip, I still remember watching the Savannah trip you posted last year. I'd be interested in hear about you video setup and how you manage battery life and data while on the road.
Oh yeah, that trip was a blast! So I run a GoPro Hero 10 now, I had a 7 for that trip tho. I also bring along my Sony A6400 with an 4/18-105 with a tripod. Love the flexibility of that lens! Battery management isn’t too bad, I’ve got a USB plug lead off the battery, so when I’m moving, I’m usually charging something, be it my phone, Sena, camera, or a battery pack. I have a couple GoPro batteries I can swap out too. :)
They're TCX Heros! Great boots, very comfortable when you break them in. Don't trust the manufacturer on the "waterproof" designation though, they're water resistant, but your feet still get a little wet after a couple hours of heavy rain. Excellent boots though, I love them.
What kind of BMW R do you have there. Looks and sounds awesome. I myself ride BMW motorcycles since 1978. My newest one is a 2008 R 1200 GS Adventure. We (my wive and I) make lovely rides and vacations here in Switzerland, France, Southern Germany, Austria and northern Italy with it. Keep it running. Boxer BMW‘s are wonderfull with a lot of caracter!
Nice road trip video. But you should tell us a bit more about your R65. For example, I've always read they were rather underpowered and buzzy. Yours seems to go down the interstate with traffic just fine. After all, an old BMW R65 is a pretty rare choice for a touring bike these days.
I mean, it’s not the most powerful thing (roughly 40 horses I think) but it’ll still happily do 85 if I ask it to. Granted that’s not pleasant with no fairing, so I don’t do it much, but it can! I don’t find it particularly buzzy either, it has a slightly buzzy spot at like 4.25-4.5k rpm but other than that it’s quite smooth when the carbs are balanced. It’s definitely a rare choice for a touring bike, but it’s the bike I have so it’s the bike I use. Plus it encourages you to stick to backroads, which are always more fun anyways. :)
They are perfectly competent traveling machines. Aren't made for 0-60 blitzing, but getting to speed and maintaining...touring ! They aren't buzzy at all, as the flywheel and opposing cylinders negate the buzz or rattling that Triumphs gave you. A good friend had one, and I have an R90 and R100 still. I liked the R65, and if you can find a good example, buy it. You won't regret it!
Hello Ian, thank you for your channel. I think the videos are great and I really enjoy them. Can you please tell me what kind of motorcycle boots you are wearing? With best regards from Iceland.
They're TCX Heros! They're great boots, once you break them in, they're completely comfortable walking boots off the bike. TCX claims they're waterproof though--they aren't. They're water resistant, but your feet will definitely get a little wet after a few hours of heavy rain haha. I love them though!
Just found your channel and am devouring the episodes. I’m wondering if you have considered finding and installing an R65LS nacelle to make your high speed highway stints a bit more comfortable? Even a small aftermarket windshield can make a big difference in the wind blast.
No disrespect to the inimitable Hans Muth, but I really don’t like the look of the LS nacelle. It’s a unique design but I don’t think it’s for me haha. I have been considering a smaller windscreen, we’ll see. I don’t find the wind too bad in all, and it does motivate me to keep to the backroads. :)
I had the same speedometer issue with my 1980 Suzuki GS850. A little blue Loctite took care of it. Not sure about your BMW but my old Suzuki is a vibey girl.
I actually added a little when I got home, hopefully won’t be a problem again. :) And no, it’s a fairly smooth ride! The R65s have a weird buzzy point from like 4.25-4.5k rpm, but other than that, pretty slick!
About 8 weeks ago I bought '79 R65 having watched one of your other videos. Insurance and paperwork kept me local for the first couple of weeks and Berlin's winter is starting to set in the past two, so a longer trip out of town will have to wait until next year. But this video has me wondering: how many country's borders can I cross on the BMW next riding season?
Thanks! They’re marine cover loops, you can get a ten pack online. Takes a little drilling, but a much better solution than the big straps around the outside. :)
Haven’t really found one I like yet! And on the backroads the wind isn’t really too bad. It incentivizes me to slow down a little too, which is generally a good thing haha. :)
Love to hear that another R65 will be on the road soon! The more the merrier. :)
I'm so happy I discovered your channel Ian! This is what youtube should be. Honest and well put together travel motorcycle travel vlogs.
Love how you take a picture of you snd your wife in your travels. Keep the shinny side up.
The ever present reminder to ride safely. 🫡
Nice video. As a fellow rider, I enjoy when roads and towns are identified. Keep on riding.
Love your videos and the calm voice that you narrate them with. Takes me back to my long solo trips on myR80rt in the 80's. Keep them coming!
I have a BMW R65 since new, I Love it!I bought it in Maryland in 1984, and brought it to Brazil since then. Its my every Day bike!
Very Nice vídeo!
Dang that’s a great service life for it! Glad it’s still providing joy. :)
Loved touring on my 86 R65. Never should have sold that bike. Thanks for the video!
I've heard a lot of folks say they regret selling their R65s, so I think I'm gonna hold on to mine pretty tight!
My friend, as a fisherman, you are the greatest motorcycle storyteller on this site. Loved the video.
Shit fisherman though. :) Hope things are well friend
always great videos to watch in bed before I go to sleep
A mellow journey is a breathe of fresh air, you let beauty speak for itself. Well done.
That’s a beautiful bike man. The oldest BMW I’ve owned was a R 100 /7. I’d love to have a air head now. ♥️🏍️💨🏁
The /7s are such handsome bikes, I love the gas tanks on them, they're so elegant.
Seeing you visit my old haunts is making me homesick...keep up the good work :-).
Quite nice bendy country roads, and freely floating traffic; didn't expect that in the US. Smooth, effortless riding with the Boxer, totally as expected.Well done.
I rarely come across traffic outside the major cities for what it’s worth! The backroads and state highways are usually clear riding. :)
I figure I'll get the motocamping in now while my back can still handle it haha. Ride safe! :)
You can't beat motorcycle camping. It's very liberating. Great video. Well done.
Stellar work, getting the notification of a new vid of yours was the highlight of my day! Love the format, style, camera work, everything. Top notch stuff!
That’s so kind of you! Glad to bring a little joy. :)
The R65 looks like a decent long tour bike. Thanks for the scenic tour.
It's no Goldwing, but if you stick to backroads, it's a very servicable option. :)
So cool. Just a guy on an analog motorcycle seeing the sights and having fun. What I love about motorcycles. Thank you.
Keepin’ it simple is an enjoyable philosophy 🤙🏼
A colleague of mine is a fly fisherman, he's been trying to get me into it. I think I might have to let him do just that haha
I was born and raised in Lorain County Ohio and have been to Findlay State Park literally a million times. It was the go to fishing spot for ease of use. Camping in the winter was always fun. My brother still ice fishes there every winter. Safe journeys.
It was a lovely little spot! Not many curvy roads around though haha. :)
@@ihutch92 yep. Had to move to NC to get some curves:)
I was going to comment on the lack of evidence of regular maintenance on your bike and then I saw a previous post where you said you had the heads off. I know that's not the focus of your channel, but some brief insights as to what it takes to keep an airhead running (I have a '77 R100) might be interesting. Awesome ride on a vintage motorcycle…… my soul longs for that. Keep making these vids.
Thanks Ian.
Really enjoying these. I’ve always liked the R65…. While many considered it to be an underpowered R80, I saw it as being “just enough”. Perfect for riding at a speed where landscape and journey could be appreciated.

That’s so fun! Yeah it’s a great wee town, good coffee, good falafel. :)
Beautifully filmed and totally absorbing. Top marks mate.
Already looking forward to your next video, keep 'em coming!
Thanks for taking us with you! Your cinematography is really becoming more polished.
Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks for the ride! A noce story on a pure motorcycle! Better than all the newest stuff!
What a fantastic trip. Super professional production yet again, your content is truly outstanding 👌🏼
I just love the sound of that boxer engine. I have a '76 R90/6 that I stripped to the frame and rebuilt. I get it out occasionally. Watching through a RUclips suggestion, beautiful interesting ride, watching from a rainy UK, ride safe 👍🏻
In fairness it’s grey and rainy here and has been for a week so I can sympathize somewhat. Ride safe. :)

Thanks for sharing. The R65 sounded great.
Excellent, fantastic, you capture the essence of traveling by motorbike!
Great video, I enjoy following your travels. I've done my share of touring on airhead BMW's, and in my opinion there is nothing better!
Great video and beautiful country ! Watched this on a nice morning with some chai. Life is good!
Makes me want to start this yearly tradition of visiting family on my Moto.
You should! Riding bikes and seeing family are always positives. :)

That sounds like a proper motocycle.
Your videos are fantastic mate, another great watch 👌🏻
I love the style and pace of these videos. Well done
I like your paper maps. I like planning everything from paper maps. It easier to see everything at a glance.
In fairness, the maps were for visual interest, I’m a huge fraud haha. I usually just plug my destination into google and choose to avoid highways.
Nice video and great trip. Good to see, that it is not only raining in Nort Germany !
pretty cool to see ya ride through the towns i grew up in..keep it up
I’m from a pretty small midwestern town, so I really enjoy poking through the main streets of small towns. They’re charming. :)
Many greetings from Germany , nice BMW 👍
Schönes und unterhaltsames Video und auf einer schönen und hoffentlich zuverlässigen R65👍 ✌️🇨🇭
What a cool bike mate. And a lovely trip around some very nice parts. Ride safe and hi from NZ.
Not that I don’t appreciate the roads I’ve got, but ooh man I’d kill for a big NZ trip, a gorgeous country you’ve got there!
Great video! Thanks for posting!
Excellent video. I do the same thing on my RT. Love it
Bonus points for Salt Creek on the Banjo!
Gotta have some good American roots music. :)
Just loved the video. 1980 model, huh?!!! I like the exhaust beat. 😃.
Yessir, 1980. “Champagne” colorwaze, hence my beloved nickname for the bike, the champagne shitbox haha :)
Just binge watched a few of your vids. Great job editing and story telling! Sub-ed.
Really enjoy your travels through the states, we don’t have so far to wonder here in the UK. That trip would have taken me to my family’s home in Ireland and back to London.
True, but you’re also so close to Europe! All of France and Spain is just a ferry away, I’m very jealous of that. :)
Hello from Mexico, dude I love your videos. You should do a video of your gear, would love to do a trip one day like you man keep the video coming plis.

Probably my favorite one near home for me! Excellent pavement. :)
Very Nice video

제가 원하는 스타일의 라이딩 영상이네요. 즐겁게 봤습니다.👍
This is poetic!! ❤️❤️
You gotta read more poetry, this isn’t that great haha :)
New subscriber and loving your videos! Keep up the great work!

Beautiful ride...
Lovely looking trip (and video), I should have been editing a video but enjoyed watching that much more instead.
Haha god I know the feeling. This one took me a while, just chipping away an hour at a time. I feel your pain haha 🤝
Such great videos
Great trip! I rode from Indiana to Mountwood in Oct of 22 (see my avatar). I camped on the same hill, at the top site. It's an amazing place!
Oh yeah, I see your picture! It’s a great spot, I stop there once a year usually. Such a nice lake. Also I love “Backroads Pizza 2,” always makes me chuckle haha
R65がかっこいい。音楽が心地よい。キャンプ地でのテント設営や釣りの画像は新鮮です。ツーリング途中で固定カメラでの撮影は面倒でしょうが、期待しています。しかしアメリカは道路がスゴイね。
I love the bike, great video!
As always a great video.

oh my god this guys video Is so damn entertaining!!
Video pulled me in. Excellent intro. The photo in the tankbag is a nice touch. Is that a reminder to ride safe-ish?
Always good to keep a reminder in view of why you stick to the speed limit(ish). :)

Great video
Whatta trip!
Nice Bmw
Very nice video, thanks. If I may, I started riding with a cover and find that it keeps the bike dry and away from prying eyes. Not too bulky, either.
I’ve brought them on some trips before, like one to NY. Honestly I ride through enough rain that I can’t be arsed too much anymore tho haha
@@ihutch92 lol, I never did either but I’m quite a bit older and arsing becomes more of a thing! All the best!
Did plenty on mine. Twice a year from N Germany to Manchester Uk, 655 miles one way. Try it in winter. The bike did it thou with pillion
Oof, I’m a huge wimp for riding in the cold, don’t know if I could stomach that in the winter!
What boots are those? Great video, cant wait for next summer. ❤
They're TCX Heros! Great boots, very comfortable when you break them in. Don't trust the manufacturer on the "waterproof" designation though, they're water resistant, but your feet still get a little wet after a couple hours of heavy rain. Excellent boots though, I love them.
That was epic!
It’s a 1980 R65! I’m very jealous of your riding area, I’d love to do a big trip through Europe. :) ride safe!
Thank you 🙂👍
Just found your channel and am devouring the episodes.
Awesome video! What camera equipment do you use?
I had the same speedometer issue with my 1980 Suzuki GS850. A little blue Loctite took care of it. Not sure about your BMW but my old Suzuki is a vibey girl.
I actually added a little when I got home, hopefully won’t be a problem again. :) And no, it’s a fairly smooth ride! The R65s have a weird buzzy point from like 4.25-4.5k rpm, but other than that, pretty slick!
amazing
Nice!
Now those are the kind of questions to ask! Certainly you’ll cross more than me. :) Ride safe
Great video. Nice bike. What are the fasteners you are using on the saddlebags?
Thanks! They’re marine cover loops, you can get a ten pack online. Takes a little drilling, but a much better solution than the big straps around the outside. :)
How so, you dont have any windshield mounted? Great video though, thx for this 😊
Haven’t really found one I like yet! And on the backroads the wind isn’t really too bad. It incentivizes me to slow down a little too, which is generally a good thing haha. :)
