That ride has been on my to do list for decades. I have done most of it except the best part along the south coast. Good to see a video.

Sad that you cut me out of the footage. I was the bloke that you talked to at the gate who said Shingle fan was a challenge. Well done on your ride.

Hey Tom I know this may make me sound like an attention seeker but I wanted to tell you. I started watching you end 2019 exactly when I started becoming interested in Road Riding, sure enough, the mixture of your content and my exposure helped me progress. I lost you for a bit when you took your break but I am so glad to see you back doing something you love! I have enjoyed riding my bike so much and I think I've gone from strength to strength I now ride in the NRS series for the Rauland's Junior Development team. In 2017 I came to the South Island to ride the Otago trail at that time I hadn't the slightest clue what the future held but now once International Borders open and I finish school I am planning to tour the whole of the South Island by backpacking and hopefully immerse myself in the NZ racing culture!
Again thanks so much for everything I'm sure you've done not just for me but for people in my situation and similar, you're a truly inspirational person I hope you keep up the awesome videos!

That was some of the rockiest terrain I've ever seen a gravel bike go on. Amazing that your friend did that on 45c tires - and your tires maybe even looked a size thinner.
Pretty much convinces me I don't really need a monstercross bike (gravel bike with Boost spacking that can handle to to 3 inch wheels) for the bikepacking routes I want to do (most of which are much tamer than what you just did). Though I do worry about how much the frame takes a beating on rough terrain like that.

So I did this ride from Remutaka Rail Trail - Kaitoke, and finished at the Catchpool Centre & Community Emergency Hub on the Wainui Rd....
I broke my seat attachment to the post at the top of Remutaka (just before the top tunnel) in the morning...
so basically did the whole ride sidesaddle with my seat perched on the post, reaching the East Harbour Regional park in the dark where we camped..
(on an old steel frame Milazo Crazyhorse.)
I became an Italian that day... My new name, Sig Sorassio.
