I have yes. I am on disability so need to find affordable items where I can. That said, I've stuck to mostly craft items. What homeware items I have purchased, I've needed refunds on every single one, and I bought a couple oracle card decks of decks I already own out of sheer morbid curiosity. One was actually quite gorgeous, not as gorgeous as the original but I was surprised, however the other decks were not good: smaller, not good quality etc. (I'd bought the decks as back-ups of my faves as my most fave deck was damaged by another person at a meet-up and I couldn't afford to replace it full price).
I watched a video the other day, which I wish I had saved, where a woman was arguing the opposite of you, saying the spiritual community is profiting from gifts, and they are called gifts for a reason yada yada yads. I could see her point but I did not agree with it. In the past, if I have knowingly bought a knock off of something, I've made it a point to eventually replace it with the branded version once I have the finances. (Talking dvd's and music here, back in the olden days of physical media).

I've been debating whether or not to comment as I feel my comment might draw some hate, but for me personally I love Temu! I buy heaps of tarot and oracle decks from temu for the simple purpose of sticking the cards in my tarot journals. I was photocopying the original cards and sticking them in at first, but printer ink is soooo expensive I couldn't afford it.
I only use legit decks for readings and my own use though.
Living in New Zealand is a struggle as everything is way more expensive then the rest of the world it seems, and shipping from America to here is most of the time more expensive then the items that you are actually buying. Temu has free shipping, and while I'm a single mother with very little funds Temu has been really helpful for me. I buy lots of different things from there, knowing that the quality isn't going to be anywhere near as good as something more expensive, but I can't be picky when I don't have money to buy nice, legit, expensive things.
I do however understand your frustations and how you feel, and I love how passionate you are about the topic.

This right here is exactly why no one should be annoyed. Not to mention, Temu is a byproduct of artists pricing themselves out of the market. Shipping is a factor also here in Australia - costs more to ship than the product cost. The argument is it loses sales for the author but simple economics dictate that to be false, as the Temu users were likely never going to buy the genuine version in the first place. Good comment ❤

Seeing all the ads for Temu as if it isn't another Wish has me like ??? The vibes with counterfeit are the same with me as AI decks. It's all about theft and profiting off the work of other people. It sucks if you can't afford a deck you really want, I'm in that boat myself, but it's hurting others when you get these fake decks. I'd rather just not get a deck (I don't NEED them) or just hold off until I can save enough to authentically buy them. I totally feel you with your rant. I'm an artist myself, so it's been a personal fight for me for as long as I've been drawing. It means a lot to have people out there support us in a climate where it's so normalized to exploit us.

"It's hurting others"??? It's literally hurting no one but your over-reactive ego, calm down. Also, it's not always just about the money, most "creators" of these desks are way too local to even ship internationally guaranteeing your package to arrive, Etsy allows them to send them through the cheapest methods and to leave consumers with no options + let's not talk about how sometimes shipment is way more expensive than the deck itself, it's 50 dlls for you but it's literally 100 dlls for me + let's not talk about the risk of being scammed... and a whole other list of factors that makes people from outside countries rather spending on printing their own version of the decks locally or waiting until america stops being a hellpit to go shopping (that aint gonna happen anytime soon)
So... yeah... let's go back to the "hurting people" by choosing not to spend 100 dlls on a bunch of paper and rather wait for second hand versions of the decks... where are you from? are you from a developed / first world country? america? Who could tell...

I believe they are different audiences. People who have enough money and value quality will buy the real deal. For people who cannot afford those decks, this gives them an option, they would not be buying the real deal because of the financial barrier. The tarot makers are probably not losing as much as it might appear. But I do understand the argument against these decks. I have heard more than once, off the record, that these decks served as a sample, and they then went and bought the full quality deck of the decks they loved.

Thank you so much for this video. I make sure when I am buying my decks that they are legitimate decks, my local metaphysical shop is really good about that actually, I haven’t found any counterfeit decks there, and they order wholesale direct from the publisher. When I order a deck off of Amazon, I make sure that the deck is listed under the actual creator and has the publisher on it. I also read the product description to ensure that there’s a guidebook with the deck. The decks I’ve gotten from Amazon have always been legitimate, I haven’t run into an issue there. I wouldn’t ever support counterfeit decks, I believe that my money should go towards the creators who put all the work into the deck. Mass Market decks are more accessible to me, especially because I live in Australia and my god shipping an indi deck over here can be stupid expensive. Publishers such as Llewellyn, Blue Angel and Hey House I don’t mind supporting because they are ethical, they support
Creators and they make tarot and oracle decks, as well as spiritual books, assessable to people like me who can’t afford independent decks. Also even though they are mass market publishers, they are still smaller companies, it’s not like your buying into a big corporation. I also love that companies such as Llewellyn with support smaller publishing companies such as Blue Angel and form a partnership with them

  • @nataliebutler

I suspect that many of the people who purchase Temu decks are probably never going to buy a $50 real deck under any circumstances, so the creator isn't actually losing out on a potential sale. That said, I'm brand new to tarot and I bought a copy of an indi deck to get an idea of whether I will actually use it. Turns out I adore the art work and am starting to see the benefit and purpose of tarot. My conclusion is that, assuming I continue to learn, I would really like to buy the genuine deck. I'm pretty sure that I would never have considered paying so much for a 'pack of cards' if I hadn't trialled the idea first to see if i like it, and understand why it's worth it (in terms of both the practise and quality of the deck). So, in my case, the creator may end up making more money because of the copy deck than they would have otherwise!

    • @JoeBrandAG
      @JoeBrandAG 8 месяцев назад +5

It's not only a matter of price (which yeah, "creators" should be all selling waterproof decks by now if they're gonna charge $50+ a deck, but the "quality" is always still weak enough to be considered paper) but also availability. I ordered the Pulp Tarot from the original creator in Etsy like 2 years ago and I spent months waiting for it to arrive, it never arrived because the "original creator" wasn't generous enough to send the deck with a traceable and a private company; nah, he decided to send the deck through national packages which led us to me never getting my deck and having to ask for a refund, when it literally was my xmas gift for myself. Xmas ruined because people from "1st world / developed" countries are way too lazy to offer sending the package through a safe company, I was willing to pay a few bucks more if I would have been told that the creator was gonna send the package through such an unsafe packaging system.
Then, here I am now so happy that I got my ORIGINAL SIZE pulp tarot tanks to Temu + with red holo edges; guess the "creator" of this video didn't read the basics because almost all decks have a picture with the size of both the box and the cards, most tarots are pocket size but some you can find in the original 12 x 7 cms size. Either way, I find the 10x6 cms decks way better due to them being way cheaper + pocket size. To each their own I guess.

Deck creators and publishers should be pro-active with filing complaints with the Dept of Justice regarding copyright infringement laws. The problem is pervasive and is difficult to get a handle on, but it can be stopped if the monetary impact is significant.
I recall this problem from the 1970s with Calvin Klein jeans. The Chinese knock-offs were nearly identical, except for the pocket stitching. Because CKs were the first high-end U.S. denim jean, and the extremely lucrative fashion industry was clearly under threat, our government invested heavily with shutting it down. Published media, such as cards, may not garner the same response effort.
The best that consumers can do at this point is what you have said... Refuse to purchase these decks. To help themselves, creators and publishers could at least request, with clever legal assistance, that major sellers (Amazon, eBay, Etsy) refuse to sell knock-off decks.
Thank you for your diligence with this effort. 👏 🙏🏾

    • @conifercrow
      @conifercrow Год назад +2

The DoJ can't do anything about it, unfortunately. The decks are produced in China, and are subject to Chinese laws regarding IP -- which exist, but are literally never enforced for companies outside of China or which are being sold to people outside of China. China's government is *just fine* with duping Americans (etc.) out of money, and unofficially don't recognize any copyright other than their own.
Moreover, so many people get decks printed in China without realizing that that printer now has all of their print-ready files and is not legally (chinese legally, at least) obligated to discontinue printing after your order is done. The creator has literally just handed the counterfeiters their decks , and the printers just make the images smaller and cardstock crappier (to make them as cheaply as possible) and print off the money. (Interestingly, I've also heard that most indies get their full-size guidebooks printed domestically, which is why the knock-offs don't have guidebooks -- they weren't given the files.)
With tarot/oracles being a nearly two BILLION dollar market, it's probably inevitable that some counterfeiting occurs, but the problem is huge and heartbreaking for the creators who get duped. :(

I haven't bought anything from Temu, everything I've seen from them is💩 . As far as fake decks go, they have just stolen from these creators, some of them have taken years to create. I will not allow my money to help them steal. The same goes for A.I. Some of them are beautiful yes, but with practice I could make one myself. If his continues, some creators may stop making decks because of the thief. After all this is their livelihood. There is nothing like the real thing , to hold it in your hand, the art speaks to you, the cards shuffle like a dream. You know that not only will you get an amazing deck, but you have made a wise investment. Mass market or indie once they are no longer in print , the prices soar. Of course they are not cheap, you cannot buy them all, so you ask all the questions, will I use it or is it just for the art, do I already have something like it, which one would I pick to use. You may decide to buy a deck and sell another. The reality is you can't buy everything, if you did you would be overwhelmed. They are like our children, we love them, but too many kids doesn't allow you spend time with any of them ! Thanks for the video, people need to be aware !

I was looking to see if they were looking like counterfeit with lower quality and theyre doing a pretty good job faking many of these decks. Now that i know im not buying them from temu again. Otherwise, ive bought a few other things from temu that were amazon level quality. Its a really hard time economically to buy anything these days. Walmart is horrible company. Temu is looking to be. Amazon is. Normal folks these days cant afford too many store choices these days. Im talking basics like a scrub brush for yr shower, some clothes, etc. With tarot decks tho, nah, i will budget in buying from a place thats the real deal. I do appreciate the tips on how to see that its not counterfeit!

I'm going to go for a blanket statement here: NONE of the decks on Temu are authentic. Zero. I've never found a single one that isn't counterfeit, stealing the artwork from the author/artists. I bought a whole slew of them for a talk I did on spotting fakes, and not one of them at any price point was a real deck.
Also, what might be an unpopular opinion with some: I understand newbies getting duped and thinking they're buying a real deck. It's exciting to think you just found a fantastic deal through one of these chinese sites (temu, wish, alibaba, etc.). If you don't know better, you can't do better. I'm not mad at ignorance.
But these folks who know that they're buying copies and are okay with it because they "can't afford the regular one" or blame creators for pricing things so high that they (the buyers) can't afford them -- those folks make my blood boil. You are not *owed* anything. Creators don't *owe you* their work. You aren't *owed* a deck you can't afford. If you can't afford a real one, don't buy it. Save up for it or find it used, but DO NOT do something wholly unethical (buying counterfeits) because you want a thing you can't afford. Take personal responsibility for your own behavior and be financially responsible to your own budget and act ethically, not like a spoiled brat who thinks the world owes them a thing.
Ignorance is acceptable; entitlement is not.
(ALSO, related sidenote: Beware of Poshmark and Mercari. Especially Mercari. There are a whole SLEW of folks over there shilling counterfeits as real, going so far as to make sure to only show parts of the box without the QR code, or putting in a generic "how to read tarot" LWB to get around the "no guidebook" thing. They know good and well they're selling fakes, since if you ask for a photo of the bar code, they'll block you. There are a lot of legitimate sellers just unhauling real decks, too, but the unethical jerkfaces selling counterfeits are very much active on those sites. BUYER BEWARE.)

Thanks for making this video spreading the message. It is heartbreaking to see even independently created decks got copied too. I'll never ever buy counterfeit decks, nor support readers using counterfeits for clients' reading. This is a form of exploitation to the original creators / artists.
One time I went to a shopping mall there was an area stood many booths. Some of them were tarot reading booths. I spotted one of the booths displaying counterfeit decks all over the table and using them to read for clients (not sure if they sell the dupes too). I noticed right away those are counterfeits cause I always do my research. Sadly many clients don't know if the decks were authentic copies.
If someone wants to save their bucks (or for what ever reason) and get the counterfeit decks for private use ONLY, I don't agree with their choice but I digress. Using counterfeit decks for business is on another level. Like you said, it is not my place to tell others what to do, but to me personally this is unethical and disgusting.
p.s. I'll totally buy whatever decks you create! ❤

Experienced readers are in the know about counterfeits. The cost is the obvious. Happens with almost any industry. Purses are another huge pirating industry. Makeup, clothes, shoes, and on and on. Not most people can afford luxury items but would so enjoy them. You have to admit, we know that a lot of the cost of luxury items goes to marketing. They could rebudget that and lower the price so more people could afford it. Pricing items with such a huge profit margin is, and creates, social exclusion. You know that 'I have something expensive and you can't afford it' mentality.
Do I think counterfeits are morality fair? No way! It's stealing. However, we have a society with economics that support it and it isn't going to go away. What you are showing here is great education about this injustice.

It was what I consider a ‘study deck’ so a bit frustrating. Honestly don’t understand how stores can sell these counterfeits - how is this not illegal?!?

Thanks for this video ❤ To be honest, I can’t afford buying indie deck, but the mass market is just getting much affordable. BTW, I did purchase knockoffs to see if the deck resonates with me. Then I purchased the legal copy for the decks I know I like and destroyed those illegal copies since no longer needing it. In my case, I still learn tarot via legal copy as it is appreciating for the origination and our Artists’ efforts.

Thank you for sharing this information. Financially, I can understand how some of us could be tempted to buy these . However, overall it does cheapen the relationship between you and your tools whenever you know that you’re participating in piracy because it’s contributing to that trashy behavior. I value my witchy tools because I value quality and creativity. Cosmic karma. I would rather save my money to invest in something genuine and support the artist community being an artist myself.

I just got into tarot and oracle cards and my first purchase from Temu was my first tarot and oracle cards. I've only used one deck of oracle cards and it's been accurate. but I came here on yt and found ur video which confirms my concern that these are knockoffs. I love the deck that I am going to by the real version because the Temu deck's color and images are not as good but I didn't realize until now after finding the real version on amazon.

I purchased decks from Temu that I didn't know were fakes until I received them. Once I saw them I felt terrible to think someone's work was stolen. I reported it to Temu, they apologized, refunded my money, and told me they would investigate. I then researched and found the original publishers. In one case the deck was out of print, and they did not seem to care. In the other case the publisher said they have a system for reporting copyright infringement and that they would report it right away. The other things I have ordered from Temu have been good. I see it as similar to shopping at the Dollarstore. You can get a few items cheap that are decent quality, however you have to be careful and choose wisely because a lot is extremely poor quality. Bottom line, when you are poor, lesser quality is sometimes better than having nothing at all. For myself, as long as they are not stealing from artists then I can live with lesser quality.

Even Amazon is selling counterfeit decks, now. At higher prices. If I purchase a deck just to decide on whether I want to make a full price expensive purchase on the deck, I will opt for the cheap Temu. I don't purchase oracle decks there as without a guide book they are meaningless. I have gotten some decks that I thought I would be interested in and found that I really dislike them, so in the long run I have saved a lot of money.

Temu sounds like an ADHD nightmare...Fake decks are just so wrong and frustrating and infuriating!! For affordability, all the major legitimate publishers have sales throughout the year. Some of their decks get down to at or near $10. So why buy a fake deck cheap when you can get a legit deck on sale for nearly the same price and much better quality and ethics?!?!
Plus, Temu has so many business, labor, and ethical issues, just not a place I want to shop ever.

Such a needed video at the right time. I keep seeing seeing these decks being sold on Etsy, etc. and I cannot bear seeing that. They are so obviously crap that I can't imagine them not being caught. Yet they run around like they are free to do so. So much work goes into making decks. We must honour that with discernement and research before buying. I feel your pain! I buy a lot of decks and I always do my research. If this can help anybody, I always look up for the deck on Google and see what the "original" box looks like. Does it has a guidebook? Can I buy directly from the creator? Either way, I make sure that I find the original version somewhere and make sure I buy that copy, even if its 10X the price of the one one Temu. I stay away from shops that sell decks with tuck boxes, or "pocket sized" edition (when you know a pocket edition was never released from the creator!), or even "pdf guidebook" when the box feels like crap or the images feels off. When you begin to notice, you'll see that the fake ones are very easy to spot.

Looking at these comparisons, I think I have seen counterfeit decks at festival. I bought a cat tarot deck at the time on a whim. Dames Darcy Witchy Cat Tarot. It wasn't like, counterfiet prices, but I looked up the deck when I got home and saw people saying that the artwork is a rip off. I don't know if it's outright plagarism or just strongly inspired by something. I hope it's not a counterfeit deck. It does not have a guide book and the box is cheap. I have seen similar quality of Amazon with Rider Waite variants and I did not think of those decks as countefeit so I didn't think the Witchy Cat Tarot would be.

Ok, so after buying 20 decks off of Temu and defending myself for doing so.. I purchased my first two genuine decks and can now say, I ain't going back to Temu for Tarot decks. The genuine unboxing experience was unmatched and the guide books are super amazing! I may still get a replica of the genuine ones I will now buy, just so I have a back up and travel options to keep genuine safe and fresh. ❤

I do understand why people have to buy from Temu. It's all fine for Americans to be up in arms but the freight cost to other countries is insane! Not to mention the markup of come decks these days. In saying that, I can afford to buy genuine now and will be doing so. Still, don't hammer those who buy Temu - they were likely never going to buy the gen version if the first place, so no loss to author really.😊

Moonology decks are trash either way 😂🙈
But on topic, there was one deck that was over 100$ from an indie creator and I wasn't sure I'd connect with it, I ordered a 10$ fake from ebay first to try. But only because I knew the original deck is very bad quality, only the art is nice, they didn't even offer a book, you have to order that seperate from amazon and I just wasn't sure I wanted to support such deck creators...
Anyway I ended up liking the deck so I purchased the official one fully knowing I was getting cards almost as bad as the fake ones.
That's the only way I can see the use of for these decks. Some decks are officially very overpriced for what you get, if you don't 100% know if you'll connect it is a way to try it out.
Or if the real decks are out of print, then you aren't hurting any creators. But those are the only exceptions for me.

I enjoy not having a book at times it means you have to trust your intuition rather than depending on a book. I've been reading tarot for over 10 years, and I do agree that these small decks are not for beginners.

Sadly, even smaller meta stores in Portland and Seattle are selling the pirated decks. I am too big a chicken to admonish them in person, but the minute I saw the decks, I walked out. Nothing else made a difference... they could have been selling magic youth potion, or actual masterpieces... I couldn't see anything after the stolen work of hungry hard working artists. The artists don't even make that much. Gagz.😢🤮🤮🤮

I get purchasing for the educational opportunity to show why these decks are inferior and knockoffs. But it’s hard to shake off the ick feeling of buying from them to begin with. I don’t know. There’s no real way to win here. Yes, your purchase supported knockoff decks but again, I understand it for the teachable moment. I just couldn’t knowingly buy a fake. If I was a creator of a tarot deck and somebody else took my artwork and ideas and created counterfeits, then I would be pissed. I would even try and find who is doing it and sue them. However, the problem is that these counterfeits come from China, where the concept of ownership does not exist. Temu is a Chinese company. I'm not saying this to sound racist or xenophobic, so please don't misinterpret my words. It is not a secret that China is known for creating counterfeits, not even just tarot cards, but they do this more with fashion items. My boss went to Hong Kong with his wife in 2022 for vacation and he said there were tons of shops that sold counterfeit fashion items. And what's worse is that the quality of these items is garbage and it's almost impossible to regulate this across international markets. It's really gross. Because of this, I refuse to buy from Temu.
Also, Temu is not the only place this happens. They also sell counterfeits on Amazon. I purchased the Golden Girls Tarot from Amazon, but what arrived was a counterfeit deck. How did I know it was counterfeit? It came in a regular card deck box, the cards were smaller than the real cards, and one of the cards had a typo. Yes, you read that correctly, a TYPO. The Lovers card in the deck was labeled "The Magician." Yes, I was PISSED! I love the Golden Girls and I wanted the deck to use it for fun readings. But I couldn't use this deck because of the typo. On Amazon, the deck was advertised as the real deck, which was very deceptive. So I reported the seller for selling counterfeits; I even shared a picture of the card with the typo. That seller is no longer on Amazon. I then promptly bought the REAL deck, which I luckily found used. And when it arrived, I was so happy. The counterfeit deck was thrown in the trash.
But yeah, these people who make counterfeit decks suck and worst of all, they don't care. They just want to make money. Nobody is going to regulate them unless the USA bans those online shops and Amazon enforces policy to regulate counterfeits. If it were up to me, I would ban Temu in the USA market, as well as other online shops like it.

Some of you might not like this, but I would like to share my experience. I have a friend that loves Tarot cards as much as I do. I have gifted her some decks that I no longer use, yet she also wanted to experience decks she is interested in, but unfortunately, can't afford them. I ended up buying some decks I already owned on Temu so I could compare them, some of them were decent knock offs. So, I told my friend about Temu and told her they were knock off decks but it is a way to work with the decks she likes until she could afford the original copies. She was so thrilled about this. I also have bought some decks off of there that I have been interested in but I didn't know if I would connect with them, and came across decks I never even heard of, and now I want to buy the original copies. So honestly, I don't think this is taking away that much money from the original creators of these decks. Most of the people that are buying knock offs, can't afford the original anyway. I have decks on my wishlist that might go out of print before I actually get a chance to buy them. And then what happens after that, people who were able to buy them when they were in print now have the ability to make double to triple the amount or more selling their copy to those who have the means and motivation to buy them. So as the saying goes, "Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater". Most Tarot and Oracle readers would rather have the original, and will buy them when the opportunity arises.

I recently bought a fake off temu to see if I would actually like the real one , as soon as I got it I flipped through the cards and they were alot smaller than the real ones but all images and wording was the same I immediately went and purchased the original. It cost me an arm and a leg though cause I live in Canada and shipping costs are insane here and conversion rates suck. . .. I can't afford to be doing that often... So to me it could help someone see if they really like the deck enough that they would wanna save up for the real one.
