    I went to Oshkosh some 30 years ago. Merlin powered Mustangs and Spits were doing high speed passes over the runway for some 15 minutes continuosly.
    You could feel the vibration in your chest. Wonderful stuff, nothing like it. Thank you.

  • @MrDaiseymay
    @MrDaiseymay 10 лет назад +3

    Without the Merlin engine--the P.51--or Mustang as the RAF named it, was rejected by both air forces as inadequate for front line use. Not enough muscle. It's a historic fact that when the Merlin was installed it became a very good contender. The P.51 was used for support on long haul bombing missions, once Drop tanks were installed. Of course the Mosquito was able to bomb Berlin on it's own, and usually evaded the chasing fighters on the way back---dammed good these Merlin's. It was the only aircraft engine to start and finish the war, with it's original design, despite all the years of development. What ?

    I was in my garden the other morning, pottering around as you do, when I heard a distant sound. I knew what it was, it was a Rolls Royce Merlin. When you hear that sound, you just kind of stop doing things and look up. Two Spitfires flew over at around 500 feet against a clear blue sky. I just kept watching until they were gone, I just kept watching.

    I was there in 97 and for the price of an ice-cream watched these two jewels, a

    An incredible afternoon.

    What joy!.
    The sound.
    The reaction.
    And, when I see the kids waving, as the Hurricane passes over them, well, what can one say. The kids have heard, have seen, have experienced. The rest is up to us, their grandparents, to pass on the tales of 'then'.
    Again, though, once heard, one never forgets a Merlin.

    Born in 1941, and living 5 miles from Castle Bromwich Nr Brum, throughout the War; One of my earliest memories is of being in the back garden, and seeing/hearing what must have been--in the main, Spitfires taking off for delivery, or testing, many times during the day. 30 yrs later, my brother lived in one of the many new houses built over the main runway, where spits were once rolled out---to save us all from evil. The rumour persists that tons of Spit parts and even engines are buried there.
