    And store it properly. Lay it down to keep the cork from drying out, keep it cool, and in a dark place (or at least out of direct sun). I worked at a restaurant that stored red wines on top of a tall cabinet, so they were almost hot when served. Disgusting. I thought I hated red wine til I discovered that serving them cool (not cold) made all the difference.

      Most wine is also designed to be drunk within a year or two. If you want to lay down wine go to a propper wine dealer and they will sell you one, that then needs to be stored correctly. They are generally not that great in “my opinion” I prefare a nice one that’s farily new.

    Something I wish was pointed out more often is that it also doesn't necessarily have to do with the quality of the wine. Some wines are just meant to drink young and fresh and that doesn't mean they are worse. Tipically for a wine to be able to age well in the bottle it has to have a previous aging process, that's why most whites won't age well. Aging gives a lot of character to the wine, a lot of scents from the woods, but it also suppresses some elements from the fresh fruit in the final flavour. So it just depends on the intentions that the winery had with that wine, when selecting the varieties and defining the process. There are many young wines that have a very interesting flavour that has nothing to envy from aged wines, and aged wines that aren't that great.

    The type of wine wouldnt have made a bloody difference, Kaya's bottle was 'corked', the cork dried out and air got in, turning the wine to vinegar, if you want to age your wine, store it horizontally so the wine is in contact with the cork...and pray.

    • @skoknor
      @skoknor 2 месяца назад +15

      come on now, don't get pedantic on me, there would only be a few select wines I would age, if any to begin with, but to remark that the reason for the wine going rancid was the choice of wine (when described as tasting like vinegar) obvious signs of corking, doesn't take 3 years in a winery to figure that out.

    • @alexharrison2743
      @alexharrison2743 2 месяца назад +6

      @@skoknor yeah, that's not simply age that's done that to the wine, it's because it's been exposed to air and has oxidised, turning to vinegar. Air can either get in from opening the bottle, an incomplete seal, or the cork drying out & air getting through the cracks

    • @bigbenigs
      @bigbenigs 2 месяца назад +6

      @@skoknorquestion, since I don't know much about wine. If it's not a good wine for aging but it was stored properly, what would happen to it after a few years? Will it retain its original flavour or will something else happen to it?

    • @skoknor
      @skoknor 2 месяца назад +10

      @@bigbenigs It would change but dependant on the amount of time it is aged. Over time the chemical composition (tannins and phenolic compounds) of the wine will adjust and potentially develop undesirable flavours, mustiness from the cork, or vinegary from oxidation and acetic acid formation.
      TLDR if it's characteristics are not really suitable for aging then chances are it would degrade in quality.

    I have drunk mead and homemade wine that had been aged 18 years and it had not turned into vinegar, they had aged well. It does absolutely not have to be a good year of an expensive vineyard with a red wine. It can all be homemade wine. Prepare the bottle clean well AND use desinfectant for brewing, it needs to be corked. But if you buy your wine to age it it needs good storage without heat above room temperature like ever or freezing or sunlight all these destroy the wine. Preferrably a stable 12-15 degrees °C. And the manufacturer needs to use desinfectant for winebottles and the cork before bottling not just cleaning. A full bodied wine with a powerful taste makes the most sense to store.

Go for good sweet wines like Tokay, Sauternes, or German Rieslings like spätlese, BA,TBA or eiswein. Not only they keep better in time because of the high sugar content but also they are super tasty even for an undeveloped palate.

    Go to a good wine shop and tell them what you're doing. My guess is they'll be super excited to help

    That lady has no clue how wine aging works but speaks confidently about stuff she has no clue about. Love it.

    A bottle of tequila, wine, scotch. But definitely have one for them, and another for their wedding day

    That sounds cool. But maybe just get a bottle from a known good year as well and just swap the labels. It's the sentiment that counts.

    Do it with a good Port, they are excellent at aging.

    I absolutely want to do this for my nephew & niece, but keep it exactly the same so as to pull one last prank on them & teach them about unmet expectations & the irony of life or some bullshit - I’ll make something up, leave it in a note.

    Even those still have an expiration date, my dad (who is really an old man, 50yo than me), has 3 bottles of old wine (he used to run a hotel & often for wines he works never have had the chance of getting, let alone afford, without being a billionaire, if he'd done something else), oldest of which is 1954, all 3, even having been kept well, in dark damp area, on their sides, are ruined, labels half gone, wax disintegrated, one has lost at least 1/4 of the stuff. In not sure which but one os one if the top wine itw, a château le fit I think, or one of those exclusive ones, wasted. So even the good stuff, don't keep it to long or you'll waste money, & good wine

    okay let's get one thing straight here, when you buy a 5 year aged bottle of wine from the store and you keep it in your pantry for 18 years, the wine doesnt become a 23 year aged wine, its still a 5 year because the 5 years refers to how long it was aged in a barrel in a controlled environment. if you keep it in your pantry for 18 years it's just going to spoil. these people don't fundamentally understand how aging alcohol works

    "Some wines are better drunk fresh and young" quite remind me of the saying "Aged like a fine wine." Might be the wine in me but I thought this to be extremely arousing.
