    John's 9.43 was an absolute bomb with an insanely steep face at the end section. Jordy had all the momentum at the beginning, really surprised John was able to come back. Way to hold it down John!

    Why Jordy, why!?!
    Poor positioning cost him the heat.
    People moaning about John John getting 9.43 need to take wave selection into account. That was a beast!
    Jordy has been screwed in the past, but this was his mistake, being out of position at the end of the heat. (Though it's tricky to read exactly where they're gonna break and 2m this way or that can be the difference.)
    Still rooting for him big time. B)

      tripping bruh. Johns 2 highest scores were fairly equal, so I say a 7.37+9.43 averaged to a 8.4 per wave (Which I think both waves were about an 8.), he's still got Jordy by almost a whole point.

  • @Lotus-Son
    @Lotus-Son 4 года назад +3

    Normally I like john john for his power and seemingly laid back attempt at inhuman power carves and manuevers.
    But I felt like Jordy had a lot more natural or at least "classic" flow taking as advantage of the amount of face he carved up and surfed from top to bottom with really good rail power and rail game.
    Like someone said earlier JJF seemed to be taking more time on the top of the wave. Arguably the power and put into those turns at the top were actually really good, and his end manuevers had a bigger exclamation point than any of jordy's finishers. But I do prefer jordy's flow and approach.
    Sort of the same way I feel about footage of JJF and Connor coffin at jbay. I know JJF's natural abilities surpass Conner's but Conner approach to that wave is more beautiful and fluid to watch for me.

      Randall Selsby I was really agitated in the last event, because I felt Italo’s last wave was Waay over-scored, and it kinda of ruined the legitimacy of the whole contest for me. On a certain level, as a surfer I secretly know that... as an endeavor, surfing is often not truly quantifiable, and giving x amount of points to Renoir and y to Van Gough is patently absurd, and so when we emotionally invest in a a contest that has no stopwatch, that is determined by fellow humans, and as such, is flawed, we will sometimes be upset... I was far more impressed with Tom Curren’s graceful planing on his modified skimboard than in Occy, as much as I love the Occ, trying to rekindle the glory years... But agreed, the judging so far this year is looking shaky...

      Man I followed the whole season last year seriously and couldn't believe the judging. Looking back in time it seems surfing judging has always been a very difficult task. This year is off to another stinker of sludgey judging but all the guys on tour have surfed some great waves to entertain us fans so I appreciate that. Surfing is the real winner

    I sort of wanted Jordy to win more and actually, you know ,where the gold shirt and all that kind of stuff .but he's always putting in performances that I want to watch and these two guys put on a lesson of how to use short boards on huge surf I'm going to watch this thing a few times. High score was for the set wave, there's nothing new here, you get extra points for set waves, the bigger the more points end of story, he surfed it like any other wave to score a 7 or 8 and with the set wave extra it takes it to 9 easily.

      And yet Filipe was on the bigger set waves of the final??? Go figure

    • @StrongerAths
      @StrongerAths 5 лет назад

      @@upsidedahead Filipe didn't pull off any huge manoeuvres on any of his bigger waves though (by his standard), he safetied them pretty hardcore compared to JJF. I was pretty devo'd about the outcome, as I had a bet on FT to win it, but the outcome was pretty correct imo.

    • @Dills1212
      @Dills1212 5 лет назад

      It's not a big wave contest - wave selection>wave size. Jordy's waves were also 'set waves' just he identified that the medium ones hugged the reef better and allowed him those big manoeuvers on the outside whereas he let John take the big ones that pushed wide and offered little more than a big closeout for John to wiggle to and lay down a fairly safe early timed layback that had been getting him points all event.

    • @upsidedahead
      @upsidedahead 5 лет назад

      @@StrongerAths that's the trouble with surf contests. The scoring is too subjective. Especially in these close heats. Personally I thought Filipe got the required score on his last wave. Huge commitment (criteria) to get around that section. Not many surfers can generate that kind of speed. And then he finished the wave radically and with no mistakes (again, criteria). Close call, but in the context of the heat, I thought he'd just about done enough to tick the boxes. He only needed a 6.8
      I'm gonna watch it again and see if I see anything differently.

    • @StrongerAths
      @StrongerAths 5 лет назад

      @@Dills1212 Again, that's where subjectivity comes in.
      It's significantly harder to pull off those bigger off-the-top movements on larger waves though with the extra speed and height to cover, something which was evidenced throughout the event with barely anyone being able to do so effectively. Therefore it's riskier for Florence, but ultimately scored higher.
      Again, I was cheering for Jordy... But for John to be able to pull off & land some of those massive rips on a huge set like that was something almost nobody else in the contest, including Jordy, was able to do the whole time (except for Medina on occasion). Smith's ones hugged the reef & he surfed them amazingly.. But they were at least 2 foot smaller than JJ's bomb.
      It's not like WSL judges aren't consistent here either.. You never see a 6 foot barrel at Chopes get scored as high as a 10 foot one & rightfully so. >size = >difficulty = >score.

    amazing to see all the professional judges and surfers commenting on here! Amazing they are so much more clued in than the, you know, actual pro's that judge for a living. Incredible that they know just whats involved in surfing a huge Bells wave...as they've obviously done it many many times before to have such knowledge....Ridiculous. Grow up, we all have out favourites but JJF was a clear winner (from a Jordy fan). Unless you've either studied the rule book for years, surfed professionally or have been a judge for as living...shut the hell up.

      @@Dills1212 I was gonna be nice to you but i watched it again and to have anyone say his two scoring waves 'offered nothing on the outside' is just stupidity. I shouldn't waste time replying but go to 7:36 and tell me that wave offered nothing on the outside. A massive drawn out rail turn on a huge steep wall, 3 more smaller turns on that wave with a massive hit on the inside close out that was arguably triple overhead. Anywhere in the 9-10 range would have been a fair score.
      Second scoring wave was exactly a 7.37. Anywhere from 7-8 would have been fair.
      Being the surfer in position for those 2 waves also adds to the totals. Like it or not. Luck or not.
      I wanted Jordy to win the event and I want him to take the title and I think he will but this heat was actually one of the rare heats that was scored correctly.
      Was jj's heat and Jordy would fully agree after watching it back, I'm sure. What a legend Jordy is too.
      And a tip for you.. almost all sets, everywhere in the world will break wide off a reef unless very low tide. Sand too. This is what makes it even better when a surfer is able to be in position for that big wide set, as well as being able to pick off high scoring, smaller waves. The surfer gets that rush knowing he's in position for something that can potentially score big, the crowd feels that rush and goes nuts and the judges, most importantly, feel it too. even as they are watching it unfold, the surfer out the back scratching for the horizon and looking as though he'll be in position. This is what brings big points. And those waves did stand up, big steep walls and massive finishes.
      End of conversation yeah. You're a troll or an idiot.
