While looking over the new power equipment at one of the big box stores (I won’t say which one but it’s the opposite of Highs) one day many years ago, an Ariens was the first riding mower that I ever saw with a plastic transaxle on it. Many were built that way after and I assume they were not the first, either, but I lost a lot of respect for their brand that day. All these many years later, I see any Ariens and all I can think of was that new riding mower with the cheap looking black plastic transaxle case. What a piece of junk!
Definitely not the first. But most things at big box stores I feel are cheapened. If buying power equipment or mowers I always recommend dealers. They have better options, better products across the board, on site warranty and service as well. And some offer good financing. But not all dealers are good ether.
Unfortunately this SOP for MOST manufacturers, even the high profile ones! Good example is John Deere with PLASTIC hoods on their riding mowers. Even my CHEAP 20yr old MTD (Yardman) rider has a METAL hood!
I would give my left nut for that machine! I would clean that thing (with compressed air) after EVERY mowing job! It is sacrilegious how the owner has treated that mower!
I have a "Mack SS522" (Generic version of Ariens, built in BRILLION, WI). I purchased this snow thrower in '94 from Menards for $199.95, Mack Industries was closing. These snow throwers originally went for $450. This machine is FANTASTIC, starts on the FIRST pull every season, never any parts, except a belt 2 in 20yrs. What makes it great, is that it's a 2-stroke 5hp, 22". Never needs oil changes and STILL has the original plug!
I have a "Mack SS522" (Ariens "black label" version) that I purchased from Menards in 2004. They were being closed out (2-stroke ), for $199 (no warranty or paper work). All it has ever needed was the belt (a couple times). That 5HP "tecumseth" engine is GOLDEN! It ALWAYS starts on the first or second pull (never need to use the electric start) at start of season! And after 20 years has needed NO repairs, even has the original spark plug!! However, I do maintain it by the book. Btw, that "SS322" is the 3HP version of mine.

That's a huge pet peeve of mine. Takes me roughly 5 minutes to use the leaf blower after each mow. I haven't had to replace a belt or mandrel in years. The moisture from all that debris is probably what froze the choke cable

My stuff gets blown off top to bottom with leaf blower every time I am done mowing and they are washed and shined up if they get dirty and at end of every season and covered!
Yep, I do the same with all my lawn equipment. After every use, I use the leaf blower to clean the whole machine. I also blow the engine and cylinder cooling fins clean to help keep the engine running cool. I also give the machine a good power washing in the fall and grease all the fittings and change the oil and filter. I even take the deck off and power wash the underside till it's completely clean. And like you, I cover the machine for the winter. It's great to start another summer season with a clean and well-maintained machine. It amazes me that someone would drop off their machine for service in such dirty condition. At least blow all the leaves off the machine. Come on man! Does that remind you of the Clown in the White House?
