The emphasis should be on "little" rather than "adventure." Haha....that was a good one! This trip was nice until I tried to sleep and realized a plague of biting sand fleas had infested my tent. I've since talked to more experienced island campers and they all say to use a hammock since these little devils can't get more than about a foot off the ground. I was a bit unprepared I'm afraid and also had both cameras die on me. Not what you'd expect from a former Marine but I ain't the man I use to be unfortunately. 😊 Stay safe Adrian and thanks for watching!
Thanks man! This trip didn't turn out as expected but it was definitely an adventure. I'll be making a better camping video soon in the Upper St. Johns River Marsh while hunting wild pigs from the canoe. Do you do any hunting in Georgia. The deer up there make ours in Florida look like chihuahuas!! Take care and stay safe.
Thanks a lot for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. I appreciate it and would highly recommend your channel to anyone interested in wilderness experiences filmed in very high quality. Excellent stuff! Take care and be safe out there.
Thank you very much. I was just watching several of your excellent videos and would recommend your channel to anyone who may happen to read this, Really, really beautiful landscapes up in Sweden shot in stunning 4K with the best color and sound I've seen on RUclips. Very impressive! Thanks for taking the time to view and comment on my humble video! Stay safe out there. 🛶🐊
Yeah before the lock down! Anyway I love discovering new places and as I can't travel everywhere, even though I wish, i watch others people clips from their areas! And now even more since we cannot leave the house! Great content! You are very entertaining! I will stay in touch!
Thanks for watching!. The nice thing about RUclips is you can experience so many other things (especially now that we're isolating so much). With a click of the keypad I can be surfing with someone in Hawaii and the next click I'm exploring the Amazon and then digging for gold in the Yukon (or whatever). It just gives us all a vehicle to ride along on other people's adventures. I appreciate you taking the time to comment on my humble video and your kind words. Stay safe my friend.
@@CanoeingTheEdgeOfTheWorld was my pleasure and you are right, we are blessed to have internet if not I would have died in the house during this world wide mess! RUclips is my best friend these days!
Looks like an awesome place for canoe camping. That is definitely a good sized waterway. Interesting to see the wrecks and abandoned boats too... good thing there wasn't a green canoe also:) Can't beat a steak dinner on the beach. It's too bad about the cameras, they can be a real pain sometimes trying to maintain power and memory. And too bad about the sand fleas, that didn't sound very fun. The little buggers pack a good bite. Looking forward to the next one, thanks, take care.
Hey Nick! I was actually thinking about you and GRS Riverrider when I commented about people making canoeing videos in Canada out in the wilds with the grizzly bears. I should have mentioned you guys in this one and how you're facing Ursus Arctos Horribillis instead of common sand fleas. It was a great trip until right at dark when everything went south. Looking forward to your next video. Everyone check out Nick Harland on RUclips. This guy's forgotten more about canoe camping than I'll ever know!
I love it! ❤️ Love your channel! ❤️ 😊 Keep em up, Left a fat like!😉 More power to your channel and continue to upload videos that I’d like ☺️All the best for 2020! 🤩
I appreciate the comment and fat like 😊 I was just watching your video of funny cats and it made me smile. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Stay safe and say hello to the little furry rascals for me! Cheers.
Taking one for the team, my daughter and I had a similar mishap last year. With the important difference that the bugs did not penetrate our tents mesh. Your sacrifice was not in vain though, you have made another fantastic video ! Taking the viewer on a trip, explaining very clearly what you encounter. I know I’m biased being a member of the “50+ canoeing society” , but in all fairly objective honesty : awesome video !
Thanks Udo. This was intended to be a very different video and when the sand fleas broke my will I decided I'd just forget the entire ordeal and chalk it up to experience. I'm actually pretty good at tolerating biting insects but I've never encountered the little devils like I did that night. It was also a hot night and sweat absolutely drives them into a frenzy. But I learned a valuable lesson. I have some very fine mesh now for the tent door that I'll velcro on for next time and everything should be tolerable. I also don't forget to bring extra power cables for the charger and spare batteries now! Thanks for watching and commenting. Stay safe so we can watch many more of your great videos in the future.
Very nice vid with lots of local info, liked it very much. Shame for the ending of it, but been there done that (although the flyproblems here in summertime are midges and other bloodsuckling mosquitoes...)
Yes, the trip didn't go as planned but that's my fault. I didn't anticipate it being so infested with sand fleas and I didn't realized the little devils could fit through the screen on my tent. I watched a recent video on Kababoes channel where he's camping in the Netherlands and couldn't believe all the biting insects he encountered. I don't think I realized how bad it can be for you guys in Europe but that video made my skin crawl. He was covered in midges and flies. The problem with these sand fleas is you can't see them (or just barely) and they get into every bit of gear you have. The solution is to use a hammock since they're hopping around in the sand and can't fly. Lesson learned!
Thats lesson learned indeed. Used an hammock bought from Amazon in the recent past but never seemed to get good sleep in it, so went back to tents. Midges and mosquitos I encounter do fly so no difference there
Yeah see that's the only thing about camping near the saltwater is those damn no see ums. I have spent many days itching after spending a week at Little Gasparilla island on vacation lol. There is nothing worse than a no see um itch for days after the bite. I enjoyed watching your adventure brother, wish you could have caught that big snook and fried him up lol. Keep at it and stay safe brother 👊
I looked like I had chicken pox when I got home. I've encountered sand fleas many times but this was awful. A few weeks after this disaster I was talking with an old guy who said he's done a lot of camping on the spoil islands. He suddenly says, "the only bad thing about them little islands is all them blood sucking mites!" I just had to laugh. When I told him my experience he laughed too. I'll use the hammock next time. Thanks for watching and commenting!
That first large island you left is in kind of a limbo state in terms of camping. It's called IR6, and it's listed under "education" but the little island you pulled up to and watched the kayaker go by has a sign on it that says it's recreational. I camped there and went off what the sign said, but it may have been changed online without being changed on the sign. For now, I guess I can't go back.
Maybe I misunderstood but it sounded like you mentioned that fixtures could be removed from the sailboat because it's in salt water? That would be considered "looting". Very illegal.
