  • In 1949 Hong Kong, Mark Elliott (William Holden) is an American reporter covering the Chinese Civil War. Undergoing a trial separation from his wife, he meets the beautiful Dr. Han Suyin (Jennifer Jones), a widowed physician from mainland China. But when they begin to fall in love, their friends and her Chinese family pressure them to stop the cross-cultural relationship.
“Main Title” is a magnificent score highlight, which features an unabashed sumptuous expression of this romantic theme. We are just swept away by this lush melody as the film’s opening credits plays, providing us with a stunning aerial panorama of Hong Kong. Alfred Newman quickly realized that the melody could easily be translated into a song and so hired a lyricist and the rest is history. “Love Is A Many Splendored Thing” achieved the honor of being one of the first songs written for a movie to become number one in the charts in the same year. Lyrics by Paul Francis Webster.
