My favorite 1-book completed manga are *The Gods Lie.,* *Uzumaki* and *All You Need Is Kill.*
The most useful though is *A Life-Changing Manga of Tidying Up.* (nobody seems to buy it, but it seriously can be life-changing for certain people)
I also enjoyed other *Juji Ito* works and some *Inio Asano* works, but the ones above were the most fun to read for me :]
A manga related novel that is only one book I absolutely adore is *Death Note: Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases.* Really fleshes out a few characters from Death Note that were already complicated.

You should check out In this corner of the World. It's a 2 in 1 volume, slice of life/coming of age set in WW2 japan. It recently got an anime film. Highly underrated and just a great story. Yoshihiro tatsumi's goodbye, pushman, abandon the old tokyo, these are all a collection of short stories in three different volumes. They're all slice of life, but not the kind of happy go lucky slice of life, the real world dark kind of slice of life. Stargazing dog is good too. If you love dogs and would like a heartbreaking story about a dog and his owner(s) definitely check it out. Gogo monster by taiyo matsumoto is another hidden gem. Its got a beautiful hardcver by viz and another slice of life, school life coming of age story. Its about this boy who everyone thinks is wierd and another boy who has just transferred to his class. Can't really say anything else. All 6 of these books are pretty cheap but if you had to go with one i'd say stargazing dog cuz it may go OOP soon.

    Here are some random ones:
1.Phoenix v. 2, including some other volumes as they are usually all self contained,
    2. Gogomonster,
    3. Odoru! Kremlin Kyuuden,
4.Kono Yo no Owari e no Tabi,
5.Helter Skelter, Pink or Rivers Edge (by the same author),
6.Toukou Tochuu no Deaigashira no Guuzen Kiss wa Ariuru? Jikken,
    7. Undercurrent,
    8.Panorama of Hell.
I wouldn't say that all of the above is good, but it might be interesting to check out.

A Drifting Life title is now $60-90 on Amazon it’s quite thick so with the post lock down market explosion in demand the price hikes are irritating but such is life . The nuclear title I can’t wait to read please watch HBOs Chernobyl series it’s unforgettable and completely brilliant.

I highly recommend that you check Phoenix Vol.2: Future by Osamu Tezuka, even tho it's the second volume from the Phoenix series but each volume can be read separately, there is no connection. I couldn't enjoy Solanin. The pacing in the beginning was kind of slow(though I think that was intentional), also I couldn't get passed how some of the backgrounds look like they were photoshopped together with low-res black and white photos. It just felt cheesy. The story was okay though

  • @Sejdr

    Hejsan!
Just started getting into manga/anime...the other way around so to speak: food->Learning japanese->anime/manga and I started with Attack on Titan and was so impressed with the first episode. Now I must get Gyo, love the one-volume-thing and it seems like a nice intro to horror manga.

  • @estebanalzate7609
    @estebanalzate7609 4 года назад

Gyo is like the worst junji ito manga ive read. The main creepyness of ito's work comes from the unexplainable and unescapable shape the stories take, gyo explains the source of the horror so early it just ruins the entire story and the explanation just comes down to the typical science failture. The horror also is just the main character escaping from walking ocean creatures, theres no surprises or character evolution. I really tried to love it but after finishing it i cant help but regret buying it.

As someone who loves one-shots and omnibuses (and Junji Ito) this was a treat.
I would also recommend the series Hollow Fields, about a girl accidentilly entering an academy for evil. As well as the adaptation for Wolf Children. And not manga but Scott Pilgrim creator Brian Lee O'mallys Seconds.
Also i gotta say i dont get the appeal of Solanin, i read over half of it and i felt like nothing was happening. Not even in the tradition slice of life critisism way, like no one was growing or developing, there was no real emotion positive or negative. Hell when that accident happens i was excited to see some emoting, and they seemingly just skip over it. Maybe i just gotta drive through it and something will happen later but it doesnt seem like it

Those were some nice recommendations even those some of them are actually 2 in 1 volumes but no big deal. All you need is kill is great and the gods like too even though i expected a bit more (it was very short). I also need to read solanin i mean Inio Asano is a genious with his works, goodnight punpun is a puece of art.
Some 1 volume manga i recommend:
    - Hideout by the author of green blood
    - watashitachi no shiawase na jikan
(i dont know if theres a physical copy)
    - hikari no machi from Inio Asano

If I had to pick 7 single volume series (including omnibuses) that I have in my collection (that I've also read), I'd have to go with these, in no particular order:
Azumanga Daioh omnibus (great 4koma comedy series, the anime adaptation is also excellent and well worth checking out, I'd consider the dub to be a personal favorite of mine)
Super Mario Adventures (more of a biased reason since it was my first manga and I used to own it when I was a kid before it got a rerelease last year, but it's light hearted enough that anyone, gamer or not, can enjoy)
All You Need Is Kill (big fan of Takeshi Obata, and I definitely agree it could have been longer or extended)
Black Rock-chan (one of the first Japanese volumes I imported but I feel as if it would only appeal to fans of Black Rock Shooter since this is a spin off of the anime)
Junji Ito's Cat Dairy (I've read a handful of his works and while Hellstar Remina is my favorite, I think Cat Diary is his tamest work to date, and as a car owner myself I think it did a good job conveying what it's like to have one or more cats as pets)
Saitama Chainsaw Shoujo (I want to say the premise itself or the fact that it's so absurd is why it's my 4th favorite manga, really hoping somebody decides to license it over here)
Hallow Fields (one of the manga I bought back when I was still starting up my collection, didn't know it was an OEL (original English language) manga at first but it was still enjoyable. Eagerly waiting on the recently announced full color volumes to come out)

All my 1 volume, all in one, omnibus manga:
*Time Killers* - by Kazue Kato (made Blue Exorcist), published by Viz media. Collection of short stories. 5 stories each 30-50 pages and few 3-5 page stories. Manga it self is with magazine paper or how You call it, it's not a simple manga paper, and it have Pilot story for Blue Exorcist. This was my first manga that i bought. *I really recomend it.*
*The Innocent* - Dead Detective goes to help some people and to uncover truth why he died with a help of an angel, or something like that. I have only read 1 chapter, so i can't say is it good, but as far it looks nice. *Maybe look it up, maybe You will like it.* Publisked by Yen press. And one of the creators is founder of Marvel Studios.
*the gods lie.* - as i said in few other video comments. I liked it but it wasn't that great for me as for others, it was just good for me.
*All You Need is Kill* - I haven't read it yet, but i read a novel, i liked the novel ;D
*Darker than Black* - i haven't read it yet. But art doesn't look nice and looks like story won't be interesting. Anime was cool tho.
*Another* - 4in1 - i haven't read it yet. But i wish that it would be released in single volumes rather than 4in1, because single volume covers are nice.
*Kindred Spirits on the Roof* - yuri. nice, nothing sexual. but kind a boring.
*S.S. ASTRO: Asashio Sogo Teachers' ROom* - 4-koma comedy manga about teachers. eh, not that funny.
*Sorako* - simple slice of life, nothing great, but nothing bad. *Anomal* - short stories about yokai. really boring. Both called as indie manga. Published by Gen Manga.
I'm interested in Solanin, Tropic of the Sea, Ichi-F, i will buy them some day.
