Post Edit:
I should also mention that whenever I'm leaving for work, class, or just going out I MAKE SURE to close my curtains. It may seem like a small thing, but if you REALLY want to prevent yellowing pages it's something to always remember.
InsidiousSwede couldn’t have said it any better myself. Like forreal, I needed this vid when I first started out 😂
hey I need to talk to u dude please give me a text!??
Will yellowing actually do harm to the pages? Like will they only turn yellow or will they get damaged?
@@poordolt6482 , they yellow. They only get damaged from excessive moisture or use mishandling. Big thing is daylight.
Close curtains? Y'all have windows?

Yup... All my manga got a nice tan..
I always get my manga used if possible so it already is usually somewhat yellowed also I try to not yellow it but yea if it's cheaper than idk I don't like yellowing though

The plastic doesn't prevent uv rays from yellowing the paper but it does prevent dust or tiny insects from messing up the paper
True. There are many benefits to having the plastic, but preventing yellow pages is unfortunately not one of them.
but what about attracting moisture? is there a different solution for something box-like?
what about attracting moisture? is there a different solution for something box-like?
A few extra points to note :
1) Try NOT to put your precious books in your bedroom because the breath that we breath out is high in moisture, if you close the door most of the time the moisture will accumulate causing damage to the books ...
2) a better way than wrapping the book in plastic is to put them behind glass on a book shelf ...no dust , easy access ..
3) isolate your shelving from the wall so that the creepy crawlies do not sneak inside the shelf ...
...
4) having air conditioner to cool the temperature in the room helps to lower the moisture level in the room
i was young and dumb and stored 17 volumes of manga on my window shelf.... they went yellow VERY quickly...

I don’t mind yellowed books, but due to manga being such a visual medium I couldn’t tolerate something like Berserk being in black and yellow

That's one of the reason I prefer box sets over individual editions. Since the boxes are perfectly sized according to the books they prevent it from moisture, uv light, termites, dust, etc.
I have a very old Harry Potter box set which looks new even today. On the other hand, recently bought books looks like ancient.
Highly informative and extremely helpful. Immediately Subbed
Thanks so much Swede, I noticed with my growing collection that some of the used manga I pick up tends to show more yellowing than perhaps regular used books, had some questions but you answered them all, thanks for the tips!

I’ve been collecting the fullmetal alchemist manga for about 3 years now. At some point, I gave up. Just yesterday I received a new volume to add to my collection.... and lemme tell you when I saw the difference in the pages . I was so shocked. I hadn’t even noticed my pages yellowing over time. This video is a big help for me because I just recently started buying manga again 😅
Congratulations on 10k subscribers!
Thanks!
This is very interesting. I mean, I knew the sun thing but the other facts were interesting. I hate my small room and my manga collection is behind the door but it has its good part because I could just leave the door open and it gives shadow even when I have my curtains open but yeah, I definitely keep it out of the sun. The fact about the colder room, it will have to wait till I can get a room just for manga and stuff because ain't no way I'm gonna sleep in a cold room haha. Again, awesome video as always. 👍
Thank you very much it helped fr keep up the content
I have this problem where I’m super protective over my manga, i let no one touch them or read them accept me and i keep them in a very safe place. Only like 3 of my 200 are yellowing
Why is that me. I never let anyone borrow my manga idgaf if they think I’m rude 💀
Im complete opposite because i always have one or two friends hanging out in my room to read my mangas, i mean it doesn't bother me since after i finish reading them i just stuck them in my shelf.
@@KirudAKto yeah but I'm a little worried that my friends might damage the books, so it's hard to decide whether or not I should let them read some
I'm like this for dvds and figures. Hate it when people leave the disk lying around and they have shit all over their fingers.
Move them towards the least important part of your collection, get 120 or so grit sandpaper and rub them for a few minutes. They'll look almost brand new and blend in.
I’m just starting to collect manga and this video really helped me out! I would love for my manga to be protected if I payed 134$ for a whole volume of my favorite anime. Thanks again!
I had my first 3 volumes of househusband on my sill window, even though my shades where closed sunlight still pores through it. I noticed just today how yellow the sides are and I'm crying now that I see this vid. I started last year actively collecting manga too, now I keep them in my bedside cabinet to keep them from the sun.
Very useful this video, all the videos that I've watched in Portuguese says to put in these plastic bags, so I decided to watch in one in English.
For the humidity, I have a tip: you can buy calcium chloride
(it sells on cleaning products shop), it absorbs water, it is recommended that you put it in something like this:
| Calcium chloride
|
|_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _|
| Liquid |
|__________________|
There are holes between the salt and the liquid (that comes when it absorbs humidity), it isn't needed, it just makes the absorption better, but *NEVER* leave this liquid touch your mangas, I've never tested on paper, but on MDF this liquid makes it swell (so much).
Loved the vid great tips
I read that most manga will yellow over time no matter what because of oxidization, so doing this along with bagging them is probably the best way to keep them white the longest, but I guess it will happen anyway no matter what? That being said, I'm glad they're starting to re-release a lot of manga with better quality paper.
Great video as always😄, but I still have to argue about manga sleeves because they do much more than keeping the yellowing away. For me, I find it easy to clean my shelves once a week and wipe away the dust from them. I also wipe my manga before placing them inside bags and that way they will not have any direct contact with dust. I only have to wipe the plastic and the shelves and I am all good. Also, pulling the manga each time will damage the spines which would result in spines having scuffs and i so get irritated when I see that and I believe other collectors as well. The point is to keep them as new as possible for the long run of our lives. So they are pretty useful and others should really invest a little on them! That's my opinion anyway. 🤣
But, good video as always. ❤
Thank you this video was really useful appreciate it
very useful! in my country publishers use different paper for mangas so it doesnt get yellow at all. but i often buy english releases and i dont want them to change colors :/
So glad you made this video. I'm tired of seeing people with manga that have yellow pages. Hurts to see that people aren't treating their manga properly. I have black curtains in my room so no sunlight ever gets in. I make sure to keep all my manga in top condition
Agree, you have your collection online, I'd like to see it?
Alpha Omega I don't, sorry
One of my biggest 2021 goal. Is to have this badass manga collection, so this video is super helpful because I already put my books in my black closet stand, the door keeps out all the sunlight. Now I don't have to waste money on book sleeves 😅
I've been collecting manga for 13years, and most of them are still merely as new as I bought them. what i've done to them is that i wrapped each manga with book jacket, and then put it in ziplock bag, after that, locked them in my wooden box .and since i don't always stay at home, i don't read them a lot. it's very important to keep them away from sunlight and humidity. and if you don't read them a lot, ziplock bag is a good choice.
@Abhay Raj just for collection, it feels good when I look at them, I also read some of them that are not for collection, but for the part I want to collect, I just want them to be perfect.
Well that makes sense, now i need to put a curtain over it 😍 then when someone asks what the curtain for im doing today, um its a secret door to a library.
Thanks now I have to explain to my friends why I keep my books in a fridge
This guide is applicable to any form of paper. Its what museums and libraries do to preserve newspapers/ certificates/menus/ etc
I'm about to get my first bookshelf and I'm looking forward to starting my collection with Black clover and Tokyo goul. This really helps out. 😀

This was helpful I don’t have a book shelf so I was keeping them on my windowsill didn’t realise that it was gonna yellow the pages
Useful video thanks man
I wish that an video like this could've been out a few years earlier. The yellow pages doesn't bother me too much but at least now I have a better idea about how to take care of my manga. Even though that some of my manga has gotten yellow; the pages of my VizBig Rurouni Kenshin Omnibus series still remained wonderfully white and in pristine shape after all of these years (They've been with me since 2015). All that I did was just keep them in my bookshelf with all of the other manga I had and kept my curtains closed for most of the time (don't even have black curtains). Unfortunately, I don't have an dehumidifirer...
Thats why vizbigs have amazing paper quality. Wont yellow easily.
Thanks I'm glad I learned what is false talk and what isn't!
Glad I could help ^_^
Nice work! I have half of my manga on the top shelf of my closet and I keep my door closed. I also keep my shades closed for a majority of the time
Great vid 😊
I’m planning to collect manga. I currently have just 1 manga. :3
How much do you have now
Oooo what one do you have?
Have fun trying to collect the ones that are out of print
Plastic sleeves do protect against yellowing, but the main reason to use is to protect the volumes against dust and bookworms.
Maybe to some degree. But if you just leave a book in plastic exposed to sunlight all day, it will still yellow. It's a myth that the protection is absolute.
Tf bookworms are an actual thing?
How do they enter ur house lol my room is upstairs tho I have a 3 story house it will maybe get tricked
But how do plastic sleeves protect manga from yellowing? What's the explanation for this?
@@rafaels.2350 The plastic sleeves will slow down the oxidation
Just bag and seal the rare out of print stuff, Berserk and Vagabond singles are a must!!!
Amazing video
There's moisture in my city, but the container pills are expensive, is there a different solution? and since cardboard and plastic can trap moisture what else can I use which is box-like to hold my mangas and books?
I like my manga sorta yellow I don’t know why but it calms me
Ya it gives that vintage vibe
It’s like a novel it shows the enjoyment you got from reading it, at least that’s how I feel anyway
Because it just shows its age. I don't mind mine yellowing as well. Books are meant to aged like us human beings. Haha.
The only protection that I did to my manga was keeping it out of sunlight because too much exposure to UV rays is bad. Much like how it is bad for us human too. A little bit of sunlight is okay though but not for books haha.
Warmer colors are easier on the eye, that's why night mode gives colors an orange tint
It just makes it feel special, like you can’t explain it
Just bought my first mangas yesterday so perfect timing to get this recommended :)

Paper yellows because it oxidizes. It's not the light that does that. UV will discolor the dyes in the cover/spine, but it isn't responsible for the yellowing of the paper. Ask any librarian.
Thanks for the video
No matter what you collect, protecting from sunlight, water (humidity) and extremes of temperature is 95% of the job. Good video!
Ironic misconception about yellowing too. Uv rays aren't the only thing that yellows paper. Oxidation, which is where paper quality matters is a huge factor in yellowing and the reason why bagging manga is a thing.
También depende de la calidad del papel, hay papeles que a pesar de no tenerlos directos al sol se ponen amarillos. Los últimos que ha estado sacando viz son más grisáceos y estos no se ponen amarillos con tanta facilidad. Saludos
i kinda considered letting my pages yellow over decades so they could get an antique feel as i pass them down to my inheritors (lmao) but maybe i should also consider keeping them white. thank you for the tips!
Thank u for good tips
So as long as it's not direct sunlight they'll be fine? I have blackout curtains but a little light still gets in, it's not directly on my manga.
Also wouldn't smoke yellow it as well, cigarette or otherwise?
I have the best room for manga. I live in my basement with heavy duty curtains covering my room, and my room is also pretty cold.
Hey Swede, do you think dust can be a factor for yellowing or ruining the pages? And do you dust your manga?
Thank you for the information.
As a retro game collector and manga collector black out blinds are a must also if you live in a high humidity area dehumidifier is also needed.
Yellowing isn't really a problem for me, it's more the tops and bottoms of spines becoming scuffed
Also, love your collection man!
All my digital manga stays pristine
Damp-Rid is the moisture thingy you’re talking about. You can get it at Home Depot or Lowes.
Another thing UV light will do is bleach out the red color in any printed material. Me, I have a UV resistant coating on my windows, here in FL, but I wonder if it’s enough to protect my books that get a little sun. Direct sunlight (like - hard cast) will do it for sure - but I wonder if just having ambient light from outside will bleach my books and yellow my pages..?
“Keep out of sunlight”

Well damn I did most of these without even realizing
I just saw this, thank you so much it helped me a lot!! One question though, hope you see it... Can I use air conditioner with 25°C temperature on it? I live in PH which is sad..

So if I have two manga box sets is it not good to keep them in the box in my closet? Because I don’t have any space to display them yet
So, like direct sunlight is bad? Good video! Keep it up!
Yes, direct sunlight onto your manga is the fastest way to turn the pages yellow.
me having curtains and a big drawer blocking my manga 👁️🍭👁️👍
Oldest ones I have in my collection were bought late in 2005 just before the start of my senior year in high school. Bought new, straight off the shelf in a book store. They aren't yellow. So it is very true that yellowing isn't some boogie man that we all have to deal with. If you take care of your manga, they'll look pristine for years upon years. No magic wraps, no plastic sheaths, no goops or butters or creams necessary.
Nao Shadowpaws wow nice. I bought some manga back in 2005 as well but they’re yellow now lol.
Just took my manga out of the sun 😅
Can you do a video on how to clean the manga covers. Ever time I get a new manga book it's sticky as hell.
I realize I"m responding to this hella late, but acetone nail polish remover is your best friend. I swear by it for cleaning my used manga. PLUS it gets rid of sticker residue. I've even wiped sharpie off a manga cover before.
Only use this on coated manga covers, though. If it's a paperback that does not have a slick surface, it will likely discolor the book. I only have one in my collection like this (Kon Kon KoKon), so if you're not certain, feel assured that most manga have coated covers. You can always try a little in a discreet corner to test it out.
Lastly, I mention that you CAN use non-acetone, but it's not as effective in my experience. Acetone removes residue and evaporates almost instantly, but non-acetone stays wet for longer. I have to scrub a little harder, and then dry the surface when using non-acetone. The only benefit I've found to using non-acetone is that BECAUSE it stays wet longer, I can clean more covers with a smaller amount of solution, so it lasts longer. It's just harder to work with. I'd only use non-acetone if you're an extreme penny-pincher or are sensitive to the strong smell of acetone. Breathing acetone fumes are also unhealthy for long periods of time, so work in a ventilated space, and try to work in short sessions to limit exposure.
Cleaning my manga is a part of my process before putting it on my shelf (after removing stickers, sorting, and cataloguing them in a Google sheet). Hope it was helpful, albeit late af. Feel free to ask if you have any questions!
I've kept a lot of my manga away from sunlight and safely in drawers but they still yellow. I live in VA which is a state with high humidity so that's probably the problem. Anything I can do to stop yellowing from happening?
ik this was posted 2 years ago but i have a small section in my room with my manga against the wall and a blanket surrounding it and there's led lights in there and they have never yellowed
