I fixed the Mini’s rusting tailgate - the easy way!

- Lots of Gen I Mini R53s and R50s suffer from this same rust issue on the tailgate (or boot lid). I'm not exactly sure how the water gets in, but it corrodes all around the number plate light holder handle thingy.
In this video I'm fixing the rust the easy - and cheapest - way.
I also sent the Mini for a proper MOT 😬

Don't forget to rustproof the new tailgate to ensure you don't have to do it all again! (Easy to rustproof, just remove the inner trim panel and flood it with Waxoyl or ACF50.)
You probably will but replace the rear springs as a pair so their spring rate is identical. Keep up the good work mate. My daughters Mini One has been a labour of 'love' as well. I've only took pics not a whole feature film!
Haha I think I've done more footage than a feature film at this point, which is mad now I come to think of it. Been a very rewarding process though, and learnt so much.
Without the proper spoiler on the Cooper S, roadholding performance at speeds exceeding 182 MPH will be compromised. Be very careful.
i wasn't laughing.... im so sorry snort!!, rear spring. easy i believe its a 21m bolt and 2 13mm that connect the strut to the body work. zip them off take the top hat off replace the spring and bump stops. personally if your doing one you might as well do them as a pair

ahahahha. My fingers. Thanks broth for a full days of entertainment on my sick day off work. Also, that MOT test you guys have to do, is like taking online tests, you get it wrong once then you take it again and have it fixed.

This might upset you, but I had exactly the same with my daughters kia when I bought a replacement tailgate, after doing the same, i discovered there's a plug just under the roof lining near the hatch, so could have swapped the harness on the floor lol
Rear tailgate £65 - a bargain. New tailgate, wiper function, no rust, new third brake light, new number plate lights - what's not to like. The chrome looks fine in my view. I wouldn't be able to sleep if you hadn't transferred the Cooper S spoiler 😀

Doing all this to save money and then paying someone to wash it? Doesn't make sense....
i remember it was a real pain to separate the two pieces of the boot handle and not to break them, because they‘re glued at some points and have clips… So sorry I did not remember last time I said you can switch them! For me it worked in the end. But hey, the chrome one looks really nice in combination with the color and the other trim parts in chrome.
Minis and Daimlers are the cars that can carry chrome, I hope you will leave it this way. When I bought my car, everything was wrapped in black and the first thing that I‘ve done is to re-chrome everything 😂🤙🏽

I remember in the beginning you said you will sell the car when its completed? Why not keep it? It‘s the last really fun to drive little hatchback which stands out with the supercharger.. Now you git this really nice and well repaired car, keep it and have fun, enjoy this high emotion car where you can feel the mechanic going on, hear how it‘s producing it‘s power and play with it‘s handling and sound!
I would recommend you a upgrade to the gp- or even works211-Control Unit in combination with 380cc injectors and an upgrade intercooler, maybe with jcw 11% or 15% pulley.
Works great for me, really aggressive and sensitive for every millimeter of moving in your foot, feels so great, like a racecar!

Yeah I'm happy with the chrome to be honest, so I'm definitely gonna just keep it on the car.
I'd absolutely love to keep the car, but I'm not one of these big RUclipsrs that is making loads of money from this and can keep it hanging around forever. The reality is I'm going to have to sell it to not only make a space for the next project, but because my bank balance is now running dry 😂
This R53 is a great car though. I'm looking forward to taking it on some blasts once it passes its MOT!
Why didn't you loosen the hinge bolts before you took the gas struts off?
You need change both springs at same time as it will sit lobsided when looking at rear as older one will be weaker than new one

Sorry Nino I somehow deleted my comment but if you need the rear wiper and your boot has the earlier trico item you need to change the wiper motor to the Valco item and there’s conversion kits available on eBay.

you say you can't, but look at how far you've come though. You can do anything you set your mind too. I'm a IT Technician self taught just like how your doing with the car repairs / rebuilds but now I work in big Data Centers. I first started out buying used Servers to get where I am now.
Don't ever say you can't do something because you can, you might not do it the first time or second time or third but the key thing is never give up even though it gets tough. Keep the videos coming :D
Very grateful I came across this video! About to do the same job on my R53 but thankfully my donor car has the S spoiler on already and it’s already stripped as it was a race car. Will have to work out fitting the wiper motor to it from mine though 🙈

Dude, you could mount shocks first on a new lid and it will support it opened and only then work with bolts :D
I’m in the middle of taking my boot lid off, however can’t undo the bolts that bolt into the hinges.. any tips?

We certainly get our monies worth with how things have gone as far as content is concerned. Had similar experiences learning to fix all my VW Passat issues, with one thing failing after another over the first few year of ownership. Increased my mechanical knowledge 10 fold but I'm still waiting for my workshop at 55!

Leave the struts on and then remove bolts from the hinges 😊
And when reinstalling fit them first....😂

Great job on the tailgate replacement - recently replaced the gas struts on the tailgate of my Estima, but without a holding stave, or the forethought to go back 35 years and head-spin - well done!
Sorry to read about the further fail, but you're getting sooooooooo close - was somewhat confused that the Fail did not include the rear wiper blade, as (it's the motor's fitted) it needs to be functional, or did you already fit that on prior to M.O.T? Also agree with ither comments about replacement of the spring, which should be springS to keep everything balanced.

From everything that people have been telling me I expected to at least get an advisory on the wiper seeing as the motor is fitted like you say, but I didn't get anything, and I still haven't fitted the arm. I'm more confused than when I started haha.
The bottom bolt on the rear strut assembly can sometimes be very corroded. It took me 45 minutes of WD40, undoing and doing back up to get each bolt off. Hopefully you won't get this. Also it is best to replace both springs.
Uh oh - don't tell me things like that haha. Fingers crossed mine is a bit nicer. Will soak in a load of penetrant for a while and see if that helps 👍🏻

Nice job in changing the boot on your own, the chrome boot handle doesn't look out of place as you said there is more chrome on Bob, the rest are easy fix jobs, pleased for you getting it this far and it's nearly finished.

Nice! Thanks for the shout out. The chrome hatch handle was part of the Chrome Line Exterior package which in 2006 cost $250 US to add it. So roughly 500 pounds in 2006 money to add that package.
When I watched you with the hatch removal and install I was thinking I would suggest adding a small impact driver to your tool collection. I have a Milwaukee M12 Impact driver which is my favorite go-to tool. It is light, the torque and speed is adjustable and is super helpful for situations like the one you were in using a hand powered ratchet. I think you have a larger Ryobi Impact so if you want to stick with that brand I am 100% confident they have something similar. My wife loves the Milwaukee M12 impact driver. She borrows it when assembling furniture and putting up shelves around the house. My M12 Milwaukee came in a kit and the store I got it from offered a free powered Milwaukee ratchet with kit purchase. I use that quite a bit in my builds as well.
I swapped in stainless steel braided brake lines onto my 2006 Mini Cooper S last weekend. On the first wheel I snapped the banjo bolt torquing it down. So I am waiting on StopTech to send me a new one. Then a Pentosin DOT4 fluid flush and vacuum bleed and I am good to get back on the road. My local Mini Club has a first of the season drive April 16. I am hoping I can make it. Car is in my garage on four jack stands waiting on a single bolt right now. It is snowing today again today so no hurry to get it on the road. As my old neighbor Prince used to sing Sometimes it Snows in April.

Thanks for the impact driver recommendation, Bill. Right now, due to funds, I'm prioritising tools that are more specialist in nature over ones that save a little bit of elbow grease. But I'm very much hoping to get an impact driver in the future, and will put the Milwaukee M12 on the list for sure!
Hopefully there's no damage to anything after snapping that bolt! One of the things that's amazed me through all this is how one small bolt or clip can hold absolutely everything up, and just leaves you twiddling your thumbs when there's still loads of work to do.
It's all fun though really - that's why we keep coming back for more!
