Simply one of the best tracks of all time. Brilliant memories of summer 89 - remember it being played a couple of times on the radio before the DJ crashed it out after 5 mins as it's 7.33 long! If there's ever a track to give you a lift, raise a smile and make you tap your feet, it's gotta be this:-)
Saw The Waterboys last year. They were brilliant, I was afraid that after wanting to see them for 10 years or more, that they might dissapoint, but I was not let down. IThey were magicial. Got right up to the front of the stage. Was epic.
a proud owner of the the CD and a life long fan of Mike Scott & Waterboys always love to listed to Steve Wickam on violin/fiddle... thank God for letting me live in a period of such good musicians
a friend of mine covered this song when he played at the bar. He covered them and the saw doctors. Both this song and the saw doctors are a huge part of my collection.
What lyrics, what a melody will never forget th first time i heard this in 1989 on radio 2 at around 7 30 pm and what a night followed with my boss! She was the best ever!!
It was during the late 80's and early 90's and I was TDY to Holly Loch, a navy base close to Glasgow but closer to Dunoon and Gurock on the Firth of Clyde. Over the course of several years I met many I wish I could now find. Johnnie McCullum says listen to this! I did! Now I can't stop! I sincerely thank you, Johnny McCullum!
I remember well when I heared this song for the very first time. we were on our way back home to austria after 3 weeks of lovely holidays in northern sweden and they played it on swedish radio. Back home I got me the LP.
Love this song. Reminds me of a past love long gone now in Portadown circa 1993. Now I am in the states thinking of those simpler times. Cheap cider and beer.
ok, i'm just getting used to this song now and a few times i heard on our local radio here before i got the song title right after googling...thanks for the upload old man...
probablement ma chanson preferee du groupe et une de mes chansons preferees tout court!! rarement une ballade m'aura autant touche, pourtant le texte est plutot .....on va dire sarcastique!
Karl Wallinger is from Wales.Anthony Thistlethwaite is from Leicestershire England, Kevin Michael Wilkinson in Stoke-on-Trent,Mike Scott Scotland. I think they have had Irish musicians also.
My favourite song ever. Been listening to this in my Da's Jeep when I was 5 or 6, for as long as I can remember really. I never remember not knowing all the words.
The fiddler is Irish. Mike is Scottish. The others that have been in the band were mostly Celts. Hell, I have grandmothers both Orange and Green. I like pan-Celtic collaboration. I'm starting to look into Galician music. It's pleasantly shocking to see and hear pipers from Spain.
Excellent this song, is my favorite. Soy de Peru y sabes que te agradesco bastante por slide ya era hora que este esta cancion en youtube es hermosa, beautifull and wonderfull. THANK YOU VERY MUCH graybeard1952
So my woman of the hearth fire harbour of my soul I watch you lightly sleeping I sense the dream that does unfold .. like gold You to me are treasure You to me are dear Must be some feeling to know you've finally got it right after many near misses or near catastrophes!!!!
@chicoells , Please read my comments again, and The Watreboys are not all Canadian, the lead singer comes from the far North East of Scotland as I do, some of the other members were Irish and Mike Scott, was greatly inspired by the Irish culture and music. In fact, Mike Scott is related to a close friend of mine, so your comments are all unfounded.
reminds me of bluegrass if it was not for you tube i would never heard of this band and now i here good music that reminds me of no guns or ugly lyrics hooray
I am not a celtic, I am a viking. But I find it hard to sit still when I listen to this song! Amazing piece of musical work!!
Like many Waterboy's songs..this is wistful, melodic, meloncolic, beautiful and utterly unforgetable...
this is the best of the Waterboys. A very clever and atmospheric song!!
Wonderful song from an amazing folk-rock album...sure one of the best of the 80's.

Fisherman's Blues is a great album. I bought while on two week reserve duty at Ft. Ord, Seaside/Monterey, CA back in 1989 or so. This is a great song.
You know it's a good song when, although you've listened to it on and off for years, you still feel inclined to play it 3 times in succession.
+episkopi08 Yep! same with me.
Sure thing !
Only 3?... :)

Makes me want to move from Vancouver ...to Scotland , Ireland , or Wales.
10 piece band from the heart!

Might be their best?
Why the big argument on whether they're Scottish or Irish? It's Celtic either way, leave it at that.

That's true, but Fisherman's Blues and this song rate as two of my favorite Waterboys' songs.
So my woman of the hearth fire
harbour of my soul
I watch you lightly sleeping
I sense the dream that does unfold .. like gold
You to me are treasure
You to me are dear
Must be some feeling to know you've finally got it right after many near misses or near catastrophes!!!!
