      I don't have filters either in my tank, just water changes. I made a channel to show you can make low-maintenance, small planted aquariums out of glass bottles and I keep a few snails in a glass drinks dispenser! My two latest videos on my channel shows the aquariums with commentary with one showing three shrimp fighting over an algae wafer!

    That water is so clear that it really brings out the beauty of the plants and fish!
    I would love a tank filled with guppies, tetras, shrimp of all sorts of colors, lots of snails of varying shapes and sizes, and a betta sorority. As for plants, going from front to back, I'd plant Dwarf Hairgrass; Anubias and Buce; Porto Vehlo, S. subulata, and Vallisneria Americana var. Asiatica; Bolbitis heudelotii, Egeria densa, Ludwigia Palustris, Rotala Rotundi, and Baby Tears. I'd use more green than red just so the red pops out a little and doesn't distract from the main showpieces which are the fish. I wouldn't use any rocks because of the bettas, but I probably would add a piece of Mangrove or a long piece of driftwood for all the rhizomes to grow onto. My ultimate goal is to have a good 120 or 150 gallon aquarium for all those little fish to live and swim happily in. If possible, I'd really love it if the aquarium was like this tank, but if not, I won't mind using a good filter, heating, CO2 system. As long as all the plants and animals are happy, I'll be happy.

    • @pagansunite4005
      @pagansunite4005 4 года назад +1

      @@lukefoster1000 I'd definitely start with the ghost and Amano shrimps. Depending on the bettas' temperament with them, I may or may not get some colorful mixed neocardinias and lots of little hiding spaces like broken up pieces of log or bark leaning against the glass and of course all the heavy foliage for them and their babies to hide in. If the neos do poorly with the sorority then they can go in their own nano tank on the desk.

    I have a relatively new colony of lime green endlers. I recently started seeing yellow (or “blonde,” as I call them) fry amongst the normal grey ones. I even spotted a new one yesterday that’s much darker grey than the others. Very interesting. Can’t wait to see what they look like when they color up!

    • @JMJM75257

      Be carefull if you want to retain the lime green colours of your fish. If you leave those blonde fish in gradually you will.lose quality in your fish. If you like the blonde colour set up another colony for that colour! All the best!

    Those are tuxedo koi guppies, which are a tuxedo-expressing variant of the koi guppy, an albino strain. The tuxedo trait refers to the distribution of superficial melanophores, whereas body color refers to tissue pigmentation. I notice that at least one of your females (8:18) has the blonde body trait, or some variant of it. Guppies commonly have either a yellow-tinged body (‘blonde’) or a grey-tinged body, with several variations, with the grey phenotype being dominant. It’s hard to tell the body colors of the males when they’re fully grown. My guess is that the fry are tuxedo koi as well, but with some blonde bodies and some not. Update?
    Regarding the nitrogen, just for fun and because you’re also a biochemist, I’ll make some guesses. I don’t know what you’re feeding, but it’s possible that your nitrogen is a limiting nutrient. Given the light intensity, I would expect more plant growth or less defoliation. However, nitrate at 20ppm is pretty high, so then again that’s probably wrong. Fish excrete ammonium chloride, which is easily taken up for amino acid synthesis by glutamate dehydrogenase in most life, eukaryotic and prokaryotic. It could be that, past a certain concentration threshold, there is an opportunistic bacterium using the ammonium to make proteins, and that this biofilm is getting eaten and incorporated into the bodies of your guppies. Of course, this is all speculation. I suspect that nitrogen metabolism is less well-understood by aquarists than they would have you believe. I have personally had a tank go for four months without a water change but regular feeding (had someone taking care of it while I was away), and ended up with zero detectable nitrogen waste, even though it was a dirted tank with no plants growing (they died in the first month).

    When you made a video about that wine glass tank a while ago you called them koi tuxedo guppies. I also have koi tuxedo guppies but mine dont have that gold color at all during the grow out stage. My guess is that yours dont breed true. If you aren't worried about it then it's no biggie but if you want to keep that strain pure I would cull the golds and put them into different tank and you have 2 strains now.

    You're seeing a recessive trait coming out with the guppies. Gray base body color is dominant. The blond (yellowish/gold) base body color is recessive. Not exactly sure what they'll look like as adults because I don't know the background of the strain.

  • @jobkaashoek
    @jobkaashoek 4 года назад +1

    The yellow body trait can be distinguished from birth and is not sex-linked. This might mean that both your female and male carry this recessive trait or that a female carried sperm from another male that carried some traits causing yellow bodies. I must also add that yellow body is a combination of two recessive genes that alter the wild type colouration of the base.
