I don't have filters either in my tank, just water changes. I made a channel to show you can make low-maintenance, small planted aquariums out of glass bottles and I keep a few snails in a glass drinks dispenser! My two latest videos on my channel shows the aquariums with commentary with one showing three shrimp fighting over an algae wafer!
@@unusualaquariumecosystems5805 dont guppies need more oxygen though? I wanna take my extra pump out of my breeder tank so my plants stop getting destroyed but im scared the 10 gallon submersible filter wont create enough oxygen exchange
are those enough plants if the rule is 1 gallon of water per fish, depending also on the size of the fish? i don't think those fish would live too long.
Your wine tank looks great even without the filter , thanks to you I bought the same glass of amazon but I use a very small DIY canister filter that I hide inside bamboo sticks but I made some wooden support around it out of the same bamboo For fish I have 5 chocolate gourami's and 1 large bamboo shrimp 😁
That water is so clear that it really brings out the beauty of the plants and fish! I would love a tank filled with guppies, tetras, shrimp of all sorts of colors, lots of snails of varying shapes and sizes, and a betta sorority. As for plants, going from front to back, I'd plant Dwarf Hairgrass; Anubias and Buce; Porto Vehlo, S. subulata, and Vallisneria Americana var. Asiatica; Bolbitis heudelotii, Egeria densa, Ludwigia Palustris, Rotala Rotundi, and Baby Tears. I'd use more green than red just so the red pops out a little and doesn't distract from the main showpieces which are the fish. I wouldn't use any rocks because of the bettas, but I probably would add a piece of Mangrove or a long piece of driftwood for all the rhizomes to grow onto. My ultimate goal is to have a good 120 or 150 gallon aquarium for all those little fish to live and swim happily in. If possible, I'd really love it if the aquarium was like this tank, but if not, I won't mind using a good filter, heating, CO2 system. As long as all the plants and animals are happy, I'll be happy.
@@lukefoster1000 I'd definitely start with the ghost and Amano shrimps. Depending on the bettas' temperament with them, I may or may not get some colorful mixed neocardinias and lots of little hiding spaces like broken up pieces of log or bark leaning against the glass and of course all the heavy foliage for them and their babies to hide in. If the neos do poorly with the sorority then they can go in their own nano tank on the desk.
I have a relatively new colony of lime green endlers. I recently started seeing yellow (or “blonde,” as I call them) fry amongst the normal grey ones. I even spotted a new one yesterday that’s much darker grey than the others. Very interesting. Can’t wait to see what they look like when they color up!
Be carefull if you want to retain the lime green colours of your fish. If you leave those blonde fish in gradually you will.lose quality in your fish. If you like the blonde colour set up another colony for that colour! All the best!
This tank inspired me but when I tried to have a guppy farm all of my guppies kept dying except one 😫I thought I did something wrong but I finally realized he was killing off the other guppies!! Now I have a big planted tank with one serial killer guppy
Hey Aquapros, in my breeding experience with Guppies the babies usually color up sooner if they are males. Obviously that isnt always the case but with my Blue Moscow guppies that is usually the case :) likely the yellowish ones are females as they typically do not have as colorful bodies :)
I guess its the deep substrate given the shape of the base is allowing for anerobic digestion of your nitrates, not a bad setup even if it is accidental
Those are tuxedo koi guppies, which are a tuxedo-expressing variant of the koi guppy, an albino strain. The tuxedo trait refers to the distribution of superficial melanophores, whereas body color refers to tissue pigmentation. I notice that at least one of your females (8:18) has the blonde body trait, or some variant of it. Guppies commonly have either a yellow-tinged body (‘blonde’) or a grey-tinged body, with several variations, with the grey phenotype being dominant. It’s hard to tell the body colors of the males when they’re fully grown. My guess is that the fry are tuxedo koi as well, but with some blonde bodies and some not. Update? Regarding the nitrogen, just for fun and because you’re also a biochemist, I’ll make some guesses. I don’t know what you’re feeding, but it’s possible that your nitrogen is a limiting nutrient. Given the light intensity, I would expect more plant growth or less defoliation. However, nitrate at 20ppm is pretty high, so then again that’s probably wrong. Fish excrete ammonium chloride, which is easily taken up for amino acid synthesis by glutamate dehydrogenase in most life, eukaryotic and prokaryotic. It could be that, past a certain concentration threshold, there is an opportunistic bacterium using the ammonium to make proteins, and that this biofilm is getting eaten and incorporated into the bodies of your guppies. Of course, this is all speculation. I suspect that nitrogen metabolism is less well-understood by aquarists than they would have you believe. I have personally had a tank go for four months without a water change but regular feeding (had someone taking care of it while I was away), and ended up with zero detectable nitrogen waste, even though it was a dirted tank with no plants growing (they died in the first month).
Wow, I am just here for some window shopping (have never had an aquarium, but start to think I might like on and maybe can use some of my mother's old stuff), so I have no fishkeeping background, but that sounds like a seriously educated guess 😍 I had some more chemistry in school than most, but was not very good at it, but your thoughts make me want to brush up on it 🤔😁
When you made a video about that wine glass tank a while ago you called them koi tuxedo guppies. I also have koi tuxedo guppies but mine dont have that gold color at all during the grow out stage. My guess is that yours dont breed true. If you aren't worried about it then it's no biggie but if you want to keep that strain pure I would cull the golds and put them into different tank and you have 2 strains now.
It’s also possible that the females might have bred with other guppy’s before you got them. They only truly breed once and store the male’s sperm to use throughout their life.
Obviously wine glass tank works, plants and fish are thriving. You've achieved a balanced system and it's beautiful. I feel like plants are your focus and fish are just incidental. Nothing wrong with your hair.
You're seeing a recessive trait coming out with the guppies. Gray base body color is dominant. The blond (yellowish/gold) base body color is recessive. Not exactly sure what they'll look like as adults because I don't know the background of the strain.
The yellow body trait can be distinguished from birth and is not sex-linked. This might mean that both your female and male carry this recessive trait or that a female carried sperm from another male that carried some traits causing yellow bodies. I must also add that yellow body is a combination of two recessive genes that alter the wild type colouration of the base.
Do you think there could be anaerobic bacteria from the deep substrate and very little water movement using up the nitrates? That's the only thing that reallly makes sense on how the nitrates stay so low.
Thats exactly the way these work! Jaysaquarium (or something close to that name) has a tutorial series about this technique and how the nutrient flow works
I've had guppies over the years but they never did very good till I started using crushed coral in their substrate. My water is almost pure. Hardly any minerals at all.
I'm the type to start a pond. Put in simple goldfish, guppies and mollies and forget about it. Next thing you know I got a mini eco system in that part of my back yard. Example of this is my pond and compost area comprising of dead wood and a bunch of leaves, grass, and dog doo doo, mixed with some kitchen scraps.
Nice, love your farm experiences that makes breeding guppies so easy. Honestly, i haven’t had much luck with guppies. I got mines at petsmart, a pair and they didn’t last long sadly. My silver dollar that I got way before the guppies is doing so well tho, I just don’t understand my luck with guppies. Also love your pound out there and when you said nice sunny day to enjoy the pond, Lmao. Thanks for sharing....
Is a submersible 10 gallon filter enough water flow and oxygen for guppies? I dont have alot of plants just one anubias and some water sprite plus floaters
I got a 10G tank outside with no filter where I dump all my extra plants. It’s sits under a screened area. The plants seem to do great! I wonder what else I can do with it without having to change anything.
I have all my guppies thrives in an open concrete pond no filter and all of them are happy but the bad thing is the dragonfly larvae that kills and eat my fish. Also I only add water to my concrete pond and also the bacterias that cleans the water are at good condition.
I’m like is inbreeding okay with fish and shrimps and how many generations of Guppies or other fish species and shrimps from the same family or gene pool before various inbreeding defects show up? I guess I have to buy new fish and shrimps from time to time in order to prevent birth defects caused by inbreeding - especially if Guppies or Red Cherry Shrimp (or other fish and shrimps that breed heavily)?
I'd love to have some of them baby tears for some of my tanks I raise guppies by the 100's & they could use some of them baby tears in their tanks. your wine glass tank is AWESOME dude cool Idea but I'd be scared it'd get broke if you live where you have earth quakes there goes your tank.
Lol you won't be farming many guppies in that case😂 although nice looking fish. Very healthy and vibrant looking. I breed guppies and often turn air filtration off and let the plants do the work for a week of two. If you keep the ratios of plant to fish right you shouldn't ever have an issue, but I'm sure your aware of that by now! All the best and keep it fishy😂👌
