  • First of all I want to apologize for the wait. Working during a pandemic is stupid stressful.
Second there's some weird stuff going on with some of the footage; like some clips will be more saturated and others might be cropped a weird way. That's just OBS being OBS.
But yeah, I'm covering the Wind Waker today. I must stress that I don't hate this game but man, it's one of those games where as a kid you see it one way but then you play it as an adult and you just can't get into it. It happens.

Seeing a negative review of the game is much more interesting than a typical praise review of it

As much as I still love this game, I actually agree with most of your points here.
It was very refreshing to see a video on this game that wasn't just gushing with praise.
    Great video.

So excited you got this out :D
At this rate, you'll get a Skyward Sword episode out before Michael edits the Skyward Sword episode on the Unversed Cast !
Really looking forward to hearing all of your guys' opinions.

Loved this! Refreshing to hear a different take on Wind Waker. Gotta admit, I was on PS2 during that generation so despite loving Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, I never played Wind Waker. I have a Wii U and the HD version now, so I'll probably get around to it but... I'll certainly set my expectations accordingly. Great video :)

The split timeline works just like Avengers: Endgame, where different timelines simultaneously exist if different choices are made at one particular moment. I.e. the Fallen Hero timeline exists because in the alternate version of the final battle Link died at the hands of Ganondorf. Same concept applies to the two timelines where Link is victorious. The Adult timeline continues from where Link left after Zelda sent him away, and the Child timeline then plays out because of a different outcome when Link met Zelda in the garden, namely he informed her of what would happen and proved it by bearing the Triforce of Courage. It does make sense as far as time travel is concerned. Anyway, putting that aside, great video. I disagree with you and I enjoy Wind Waker greatly, but I still liked this video regardless. Keep it up. I'm excited to see the tackle Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. I love those games. I love every Zelda game that I've played. I still haven't played them all.

Dude, it's so bizarre. I agree with pretty much everything you said (except the later dungeons being bad except maybe the wind temple depending on my mood that day) but Wind Waker is my favorite game in the series. The flaws of this game are so OBVIOUS, so UNAVOIDABLY DUMB, but I have so much fun playing it that I don't care. I love sailing around the ocean and exploring this place. I love all the dumb side mini games. I love the art style. I love Wind Waker. But at the same time you could say it's the weakest 3D Zelda game and I can be like, "alright that's fair." The HD version fixed a ton of issues, at least. The swift sail and improved triforce hunt alone makes it like 10x better in my eyes.

As someone who loves these types of videos, I will defend you where it's needed. The topics that stood out to me are the dungeons and the animation. And I agree. The dungeons aren't that good and the animation is too goofy and comedic that the more serious parts of the game are lacking. I do have some questions though. In regards to some of those serious moments, what did you feel when Aryll got taken away? Or when Medli was awakened as a sage of the Earth Temple? Being the best 2/3 key characters in the game, I would love to get an answer to this question.
In addendum to the theory community, doesn't the canonical and fanmade theories hurt the games? I always hated the timeline debates. When it was a larval topic it was easy for us to fall prey to it. Nowadays it reads at best like a way-too-elaborate conspiracy theory. Why anybody would try to sequence them all into one master narrative? That's not how legends work! If the writers made no effort at continuity, why are we going to force continuity on them years later? The magic of legends lies in their inconsistencies. Ironing them out weakens the stories!
I wish we could go back to the way things were before the timeline debates. Each subsequent game was a self contained story with the occasional sequential games like Ocarina and Majora. Doesn't it bother anyone else that when a new game comes out everyone will ask, "Where does this fit in the timeline?" At this point, I want Nintendo to discontinue the timeline and ban Wind Waker sales! YEAH I SAID IT! Wind Waker, the game that popularize this toxic narrative needs to stop being sold in every major retail and mom and pop shops! I love Wind Waker but I also want to forget it existed because of this!

The weakest link is skyward sword hands down. Nevertheless, all your criticism of Wind Waker is fair!
You sometimes really sound like the old gullible Mr. Plinkett, who probably hates on Wind Waker too xD

Gotta say that this review was refreshing.
Windwaker for me always feels like a sandbox: If I decide myself what to do, it's fun. If I actually want to play the game, I sigh more then half of it and just do it.
At the moment I am doing a playthrough with only 3 hearts and a seperate one trying to 100% it. I have quit the 100% one for over a year now, it's that boring. I'm glad I did Windfall Island tho, it looks waay better with all the statues.
The 3 heart one is awesome to just do things, explore and the game finally is a real challenge.
I used Forest Water to kill the big blue plant, that was amazing.
I have found a secret tunnel filled with rupees on Dragon Roost. As far as I know, there is no documentation of on the internet. But it also does not matter, it's literally a crawling space in 1 room, no secrets or anything.
But yeah, doing my thing in a relaxed way is awesome in this game, but the game itself has serieus issues you adressed.

Lol I have a reputation from some friends for supposedly hating this game and Pokemon. Wind Waker is a game that I really enjoyed playing as a kid, and loved the art-style and story. However, as an adult who had played every Zelda under the sun, and developed my taste for the series..... It's really lacking. You said a lot of my feelings and then some. I think there's some things I wouldn't agree with, but this is probably one of the weakest 3D Zelda's for me too. Good video dude, looking forward to Twilight Princess. :)

I love this game, but I definitely agree about the dungeons and pacing being off. The dungeons were fine the first time I played them when I was younger, but now, I just feel nothing when I play through them since they're too easy. In general too, the game is very slow for a Zelda game. With that said, exploring, going to loads of islands, and finding treasure are my favorite parts of the game, and I guess how much someone will like the game depends on how much the exploration (and the rewards for doing so) clicks with them. Also, the HD version fixes parts of the slow pacing which makes it easily the best way to play the game by far.

The weakest link?, it’s one of the best Zelda games.
It doesn’t have many flaws, and what flaws it does have are minor and don’t affect the game in a negative way (IMO).
Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild (even parts of Twilight Princess) are by far weaker Zelda games (IMO).

The art style is actually a pretty big factor as to why this game is low on my list of Zelda games. I look at games like Breath of the Wild, Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword and I think "Those are fantasy epics." I look at Wind Waker and I think "This is a cartoon."
It's a great art style in it's own right, but it's just not for me.
