Golden Sun: The Lost Age - The Price of Ambition

  • Golden Sun the Lost Age ain't your gran-pappy's Golden Sun.
It's a huge game with a lot to do and a lot to see. However to quote my ex, size isn't everything. Just because something is bigger doesn't always means it's better. The Lost Age is quite the ambitious game-- ESPECIALLY for GBA standards, but maybe it's a little too ambitious for it's own good? Or maybe I'm full of it, who knows?

Totally played through this with a 100% save from the first game transferred via the 6 page completely ridiculous password. This was pre smart phones so it wasn't trivial to just take pictures of something for easy reference so it is a small miracle that I wrote the whole thing down right and pretty sure I am a crazy person for doing it. It worked though and I ended up enjoying this entry even more. Really do wish these would get a modern remaster with a fresh coat of paint, up sampled soundtrack and combined into one game. I'd be all over it.

Honestly don't get people complaining about how most of the towns aren't connected to the wider plot
Golden Sun is very much a JRPG in the vein of Dragon Quest. The broader part is a connecting tissue to give you a reason to see each vignette. If it was a TV show the party would wander into town at the start of the episode and leave by the end

If you don't transfer, you basically only get Isaac's party with generic equipment, only a basic number of Djiin, and only the essential Psynergy granting items.
You know 'force'? That's only possible to keep through transfering the data. So that secret in Yallam is basically closed if you hadn't transfered anything before meeting Isaac.

It slips past you as to why bc you don't question it, you were told to stop them... but after playing the lost age, you learn they weren't doing all this for evil... but to save their village! It's crazy. Also amazing video!

This game series changed my life so always good this cropped up in my mentions. In terms of how I feel about TLA, i do think there needed to be a bit more direction given to what you need to do to get into Lemuria but otherwise I think Weyard is one of the coolest world maps ever. I also think the fact that the first dungeon is larger than like, all of GS1's dungeons combined really sets the tone.

Regarding the Serpent in Gaia Rock, the only way to beat it unweakened (assuming you don't grind to level 99 or something), is to use all 4 level 4 elemental summons on the correct adepts, get the 100% elemental power boost, then survive with nobody going down to use them all again in one turn.
Also, it's nice to see some criticism of TLA from a lot of reviewers lately. It used to be people would gloss over its flaws and do nothing but rave about it. I think time has brought some perspective to a lot of people.

Golden Sun The Lost Age is an unbelievable good experience. I'm playing it again after a while and I can't stop thinking of how freaking sick was the mind of the people who designed these puzzles for God sake. It is. Absolutely. Insane.
There's no a single moment of easiness in this game. Every single dungeon is a challenge and you don't have time to take a break. In the first GS game I never found myself in the need of running away from a dungeon to start all over again like in this one, just because I was completely lost and confused, but solving these way more complex puzzles was a really satisfying feeling.
I don't feel however that bosses fights are that hard as you described. Poseidon, for instance, was incredible fast and easy to beat.
There are also a couple of things I don't agree with about your vision of the story and characters. I don't like the idea of putting both parties to fight. They were close friends from childhood, they just didn't have the opportunity to talk and explain each other their motives. Plus, there is Kraden, which wouldn't let them do that just like that and would act as an intermediary to try to calm things down. So I find more sense in what actually happens in the game.
I also hate the way Sheba is written. In the first game, we are told by other characters how fragile she was. Always crying and suffering in silence. She always looked like a victim who needed protection. So I don't buy this Sheba acting as a though girl who doesn't give a fuck about anything, goes around teasing others and sometimes even disrespect older people just like that. I would love to see her being a shy, quiet girl who lacks self confidence and needs to be reminded by others how strong she can actually be.
I don't buy Kraden either. In the first game he couldn't go for the elemental stars himself at Sol Sanctum because the ground was slippery and he could have fallen, but who cares, now the man climbs mountains and rides tornadoes.
Alex is disappointing, big time (I think we agree on that one). I always expected more of him, like he would be the final boss or something like that. And about the two villains of this game, I feel like they're kinda forgettable, unlike Saturos and Menardy who always felt like an actual threat. And seriously, their village is about to disappear but they prefer to blackmail a bunch of kids that they underestimate to do the big, important task while they chase another boy they don't even know how to find just to revenge the girl's sister? That's immature as fuck.
PS: I really liked the video though.

My main issue with _Lost Age_ is how many of the new map Psynergies are just context-specific "keys" to Zelda-style "locks" with little of any variance and no additional uses. I mean, Burst, Grind, those aren't battle-worthy? And Grind only has one slightly-interesting use in the cave where the grindable rocks are also stepping-stone pillars so you have to choose carefully but that could be done with any other Psy.

Ayyy It's finally here. Good video dude. Also figure I might as well add some trivia on Shining Force III since my footage is here XD I want to shill Shining Force 3 because I think it might actually be Camelot's best game. And I really do mean that. God the game needs a re-release.
I'd actually argue that SF3 nails the perspective switch thing way more than Golden Sun. It does do the silent protagonist switching this game does which is also weird there, but it actually does do things similar to what you suggested about Isaac's party. It also does stuff like towns having items that can be picked up in Scenario 2 if you opted not to get them in Scenario 1. Lots of choices you make actually have a cause and effect with later games. In fact I'd say Golden Sun 2 kind of simplified the save data transfer system of SF3.
As for the story, I think SF3 had a much much longer pre-production because of them wanting to do the multi-game thing from the very beginning. So they actually planned that out a lot, and I can confidently say it's Camelot's best story by far because of it. The story has a lot of more mature themes and political intrigue than Golden Sun, while also having a pretty well-developed world. Also seeing how the story develops with each scenario is great, though my biggest gripe is Scenario 2 feels a tad too similar to Scenario 1 at the start lol. Maps in the game also genuinely compete with Fire Emblem in regards to design, which is not something I would ever say about previous SF games. They put a ton of work into that game, despite Sega basically forcing them to get the last two thirds done within the same year.
Similarly, as much as Golden Sun 2 is my favorite game, they released this like a whopping 10 months after the first game. Possibly due to pressure from Nintendo. I really think they focused on the gameplay primarily with this one, albeit with messy results in places. Considering how good this game is, I am actually convinced Camelot was under some wild crunch to get this game as good as it is. Which is insane, because Sega also put them through some wild crunch for Shining Force III. Considering these two RPG projects were back to back I don't blame several members of the staff left after this game.
I love Golden Sun 2, I understand the gripes with the random encounters and fast-travel, but I also find the freedom of this game (and partial challenge increase and the inclusion of a hard mode) also keeps this game from getting stale as fast as Golden Sun 1. I have played GS1 so so so many times, but man the rocks are always a challenge, and I can't say the same for Venus Lighthouse for example which I have basically memorized at this point. Not to mention the freedom and short introduction means I get into the meat of it quicker. It's definitely a case of preference.
Good job man, stoked to see your thoughts on Dark Dawn when you revisit it. :)

The Golden Sun series has great games, but enough flaws for me to understand why it's fallen to a cult classic. Which is a shame because the way the games handle puzzles and the whole Djinn system should totally been picked up by other games at the very least.
I think that's been one of my biggest drives that feeds my interest in game design, even if my attempts to feel comfortable with programming to make games myself fall flat. I've at least kept interest in game design at a conceptual level at the very least and the inspiration this series has had on my dream game is a huge factor of that drive. I've at least gotten into messing around with modding games like Golden Sun, which works for me as a middle ground for now......
Golden Sun could totally be made into a hit classic once again if given the time and care to someone who understands what made it great and polish the rougher points for the general audience. And that at least gives me something to work towards if no one else takes that mantle someday.

For those interested in getting rare forge items:
Running in and out of the sanctum in yallam is also just as effective and is quicker.
If you’re playing on the switch like I did. Fastest way to soft reset:
Hold down ZL and ZR go back to game selection immediately reload software.
It’s annoying and cheesy, buts it’s the fastest way to get something like Excalibur without farming orihalcon. Because THAT is annoying.
    Also:
Some enemies drop even rarer items notably ones that ivan, sheba, mia, and jenna can hold. And they can all be easily/accessibly RNG manipulated if you’re willing to do a little leg work reading the golden sun wiki.

Not only that, but not transferring all the Djinn's over from the first game pretty much locks you out of the optional dungeon "Anemos Inner Sanctum". This also means you can't get both the Charon and Iris summons if you don't transfer data.
This is one reason why, even though it's a MASSIVE pain if you manually write out the password (for those that didn't have 2x GBA at the time), make sure to write out the long Gold one. I'd usually just pull up notepad and type it out, this way it's easier to read (my hand writing sucks).

7:00 regarding the djinn statement, I actually find that once you get Piers into your party (Your Water Adept for anyone not following) The mono class structure is almost heavy handedly forced on you. It's never really mandatory, but Jenna and Piers have brand new classes associated with their mono elemental classes ... and the same classes as Mia and Garret besides. In GS1, I actually feel like I can change my classes around without much detriment, but having Jenna take place of Garret, who herself is a very mage like character with light weapons and armor, and Piers take the place of Mia, but he feels like a very physical character with heavy weapons and armor, just feels a little mismatched to me. I wish they tuned their elemental classes a little differently, but I guess time constraints only le them have their unique "base" classes.

    • @DrMogilus
      @DrMogilus Год назад +3

Bit late to the party but whatever. I apologise in advance for the long text.
I think a lot of it has to do with visibly demonstrating how lighting up the lighthouses will unlock a power capable of tearing rifts in the ground so immense they're enough to shift entire peninsulas or even continents. I feel like having "just" a tidal wave hit the ship wouldn't leave as deep of an impression that we're dealing with truly cataclysmic forces. It adds a bit more to the already very present sense of urgency. Before we can judge the first game's events from Felix's perspective, still being in Isaac's shoes, failing to prevent the lighting of the beacons after desperately fighting a big-ass dragon and seeing the world quite literally fall apart despite your efforts is horrifying. And then you ALSO get hit by a tidal wave the size of another continent, adding even more insult to injury. "Your actions aren't enough, Isaac. How much more destruction must the world suffer before you're able to finally stop them?" Having had all kinds of verbal apocalyptic threats thrown at us since the start of the game, it serves us well to physically see what's been at stake this whole time.
Then the second game comes around and we learn that Isaac's quest was a little misled to say the least - moving continents and destroying a few towns isn't as bad as letting the whole world slowly but surely crumble away into the void, is it. Among other things, like Alchemy being restored to the world so it can bloom once again, and not perish as it was previously implied by the Valeans. The shifting peninsula acts as a factor in weighing both those options and understanding that what's been happening to the world is a necessary evil for the greater good, further proving that Felix has been in service of it all along despite doing questionable things. He still could've been a lot more forthcoming about the fact, though. Isaac's party themselves said they would have gladly helped much sooner than they ended up doing. Hell, maybe Saturos and Menardi wouldn't have had to die if anyone was any good at explaining things properly. They could've easily done so as far back as Sol Sanctum, before all this hot pursuit and hostage rescue crap went down.
On the one hand, such a tragic misunderstanding isn't too farfetched. Look at our own world - so many issues could've been avoided if people were better at communicating things and putting reason before emotions. You could say the game is pretty realistic (or believable) in this regard. On the other hand, Isaac and Garet had been quite zealous about their quest before Felix finally explained it, having lived their entire lives under Vale's teachings and barely surviving a terrible disaster, and there's no guarantee they would've believed him earlier even though they readily accept it now. But then - at least trying to explain it is better than doing nothing. Especially when people are about to clash their swords over the issue. Or, you know, change the entire bloody world. Again, believable. That's why I love Golden Sun - the game is certainly flawed in many ways, but nothing is ever shallow. Even if the plot is generally unremarkable on the surface, there is much to think about should you dig deeper at any point. This includes the drifting peninsula.
You've thought up a nice narrative that would've totally fit the picture. But I think it's fine the way it is, if a little bizarre at first glance. Shows a bit more what we're dealing with.

The only issue I have had with this game was that has an item called the shaman's rod. In the first game, this was a long sought out item that the villains even used a hostage situation. In the lost age, it's not only a weak weapon, but used for a side quest that the game gives the vaguest hints for (like the only way you knew to give the shaman's staff to the chief of the villiage is the name of the village, "Shaman's village"). Funniest most anti-climatic item use ever.

And he doesn't even give you the item he's supposed to and makes you fight him for it because he's sexist and can't believe the hero of contigo is a woman lol. Oh and he or someone he knows lies about the fight you have with him so most of the villagers either think you cheated or that he went easy on you.

It's really funny because I have nearly the exact opposite feelings about the replayability of the games. I think that's just to do with my core memories as a child though rather than any actual game design.
On the other hand, regarding a remake where both games are combined into one. There are SIGNIFICANT hurdles that camelot would have to overcome to make that work, not from a technological capability perspective, but from a game design perspective. First and foremost, if I were to put 15+ hours into the first portion of the game up to venus lighthouse, get my characters to over level 30, and have my puzzle solving skills polished with a large set of psynergy at my disposal, then transitioning from Isaac's party to Felix, Jenna and Sheba all at level 1 would be unsatisfying to such a degree that I might just put the game down and not play the rest. Even though that's what's happening now, TLA is its own game. There's a different expectation. Even if you just start Felix's party off at an average of the levels you leave Isaac's party at (30-ish, I think?) it would still be incredibly frustrating to start over with just Echo for djinn, and you're already looking at a complete redesign for monsters' stats.
Don't get me wrong, I think it would be possible, and it would probably be good for the franchise. However, it is not straightforward at all.

If you don't transfer it sucks. Isaac's party literally joins you as level 1 for some reason. I think the only item they have is the mars star and maybe some rudimentary gear. But it's been a long time so I could be wrong about the gear. Imagine going through over half the game for four level 1 characters.

    • @damkylan3
      @damkylan3 10 месяцев назад

Really? They've always joined me at like level 28. I wonder if that's manipulatable by your other party's levels. But I have to imagine it'd be really hard to get that far and not be at level 30+ by then (like my most recent playthrough), so probably not lol

The first game was similar but not as skill required, mostly was a log or rock needed to be move from the other side.

11:11 what happen if you dont transfer?
As i was little, and didnt really underestand the porpuse of the code i played withouth transfer, result:
The game 1 party has a midd tear equipment, bwsic shield armor, weapones, forgetable stuff, pluss some healing items and some Jinn, like 4 jinn each.
Aditionally there is some quest reward from 1 that are given in 2, so you don get those.
And the final dungeon requires ALL Jinn, withouth transfer you will be short in 4 jinns i belive, so you cant acces the strongest boss and strongest summon.

The oddest thing about the teleport upgrade is that it only unlocks the places you've been to as places you can teleport to, so if you add it halfway through the game through cheats or something similar it works beautifully. I did that on my second playthrough and it was a huge improvement.

I'm not entirely sure if The Lost Age's bigger size went in its detriment, or if some of the flaws I solely attributed to Dark Dawn like the stilted and excessive dialogue that leads to nowhere are not problems of the entire series, but damn it if the Golden Sun series, this "minor" portable RPG inspired by the PSX era Final Fantasy games, the SNES Lufia II and its forbears from Camelot in the Shining Series or the panned Beyond the Beyond, is not one of the series that marked my tweenhood and early teenagehood. And damn it if in this era I'm not craving a fantasy RPG with this kind of combat, one that feels like a grand but understandable Oddyssey that is both faux-medieval and faux-classical-antiquity, that draws in a light-hearted but respectful way from various mythologies, rather than one that is needlessly edgy, in which some high-school teenagers kill God. I want something that doesn't have a morbid fascination with mental illness dressed as "mature representation". Just a Grand Adventure across green forests, blue oceans, ancient temples and high mountains. Something slightly anime, with colourful and distinct characters, but not overly anime, where everyone looks like a difficult to pull off cosplay. I want a Golden Sun 4. All the mistakes from the first three are salvageable, something that can be learned from. Many a long-running series has endured many more stinkers and worse offenders.

To be fair to golden sun, sonic and knuckles took like 2 days to program they already had all the assets and didnt change any mechanics significantly it was copy and paste. with golden sun they had to build it from the ground up with barely any time to design or build it. its amazing that the first game is so good and even more amazing that they were able to get the second out. They gave them less than a year to make an rpg to rival final fantasy. Dark sun took 7 years to come out mediocre
