In this Siemens PLC programming tutorial series, we will write some Ladder Logic PLC programs in the Siemens TIA Portal for some simple but real-world processes.
We start from the simplest PLC Programming examples and will grow to the advanced levels. You will definitely learn some useful tips and tricks in every single example that you can use in your automation projects.
In this video (Part 1), we are going to create a project in TIA Portal* for a simple industrial process and configure the required hardware for that in the Siemens TIA Portal Version 15.1.

In Part 2, we will write a PLC program in Ladder Logic (LAD) for a simple "water pumping system".

In Part 3, you'll learn how to simulate our PLC program using the PLC simulator.

In Part 4, we will continue our PLC programming journey with another simple, yet practical PLC program.

We will continue this PLC programming course with more videos and in every two or three videos (Depending on the difficulty of the PLC program), we try to complete that project.
You do not need any actual hardware to participate in this course. So having a laptop with a TIA Portal installed on that would be enough! In most of the examples, you can use Step 7 and WinCC as well.
* For those who just worked with Step 7 V5.6 or older:
Totally integrated Automation Portal or TIA is the Siemens brand new software that you can program your Siemens S7-1200 and S7-1500 series PLCs using. A project in TIA Portal contains all the PLC Hardware, Automation Network, Programming, and Monitoring system information.

As programming terminals evolved, it became more common for ladder logic to be used why??
Hi Franzel! The existence of a programming terminal (or let's say a computer) is essential in order to program your PLC or to monitor what goes on in the process. Ladder Logic Diagram as one of the programming language options on your "Programming Terminal" became more popular as people found it more user-friendly and easier to program PLCs (and of course easier to follow and understand for the maintenance engineers).
I have TIA Pro, I used your project to do my first one in the TIA and it compiled without any errors but when I went to compile it, I got a message saying," The block in this project can not be simulated with S7-PLCSIM. What is this all about. I am a new to TIA platform. Is my software missing what is needed to simulate the project?). Thanks

Hi, Behnam! In case you are using version 14 or above, try enabling the "Simulation" feature from your project properties. Then remember to save and compile your program again. Hope this helps.
