I been fixing bikes since I was a kid but the chains are always the problems for me cuz I don’t got all the tools to take off chain so I try and use a flathead and pinned it out like that
😅am 44 and first time i got to know how to remove the chain. I really tried hard to think how many things i will have to remove from the bike and still the chain would remain 😅😅 then voila you can split it. :p btw am a girl and my husband do not do anything handy jobs so i figure out all what i need by researching and asking other man 😄😄
I am 73 and bought a Scott scale 50 six months ago. I have taught myself to do everything without any experience ever. It took me a while to realise that the chain was stretched, and I needed to replace it. It was a sram chain, and I wasn’t strong enough to push the chain together to release it. I found a piece of wire and threaded it through the link and tightened it up with pliers. That did the trick.
Informative video. Did the same myself with a piece of redundant brake cable wire and a pair of mole grips as I don’t have the pliers at present. Just twist the grips until the links come free.
Thank you! I've never dealt with a master link before and thanks to you, my 11 year old now has wheels again! Sidenote: My needle nose pliers were MIA, but regular pliers did the trick! Just be careful not to lose the clip, it's tiny!
Thank you, finally a video that shows different kinds of chains! I'm pissed off after watching a dozen of different dumb videos that mention only 1 type of chain, without explanation about other types and barely showing even this 1 type.
Just make sure everything is lined up do it in reverse then to get the last bit of it in place when it’s on your bike slam the cranks forward hard enough to u hear a pop or snap
Despite some facscious comments I thought this was a super clear and super easy to follow video which has given me enough knowledge to work out which chain I have, which tools I may need to purchase and how to do the job. Thanks 👍👍
You haven’t explained how to reconnect a chain using the rivet extractor to push the rivet back in. Just mentioning that a different position in the extractor can be used to loosen the rivet a little would have only taken 5 seconds
thanks for this clear, well-done post. newbie here. my wirecutter tool worked on a quick link, once I positioned the adjacent links at 90 degrees to the quicklink. in other words, the wirecutter tool is too thick to fit between the links, but if you position the adjacent links 'downwards', you don't have to fit between 'em, since the quicklink is 'exposed' so to speak.
Maybe a vice with a pin and a backing plate with a hole in it! I'd use a bolt and an oversized nut or two on the backside. You could also use a C clamp.
Great content except what way should a split link run..? (Point towards front or back of bike or does not matter) Iv had this tool which I had no idea what it’s used for, after 20 year iv realised it’s a chain splitter like the first tool you used 😂
Omg i cant believe it, i thought u had to buy this tool, and just freakin realized that i had this tool on my multi tool, freak it doesnt look the same thats why, thank youu!❤️
Look at the chain carefully and see if there are any special links like the bottom two at the start of the video. If you can't see any, then you have the top chain.
I remember in the 60s that the Reynolds chain had non removable links, with the pins swaged on the outside of the plate. Never found out how they were taken apart because I didn’t have one. They must have had a detachable link. Check yours carefully.
But what to do when evans cycles send you a bike with the chain fitted incorrectly and a customer careline that is non existant? Now find out the chain has to be broken.
"They are easy to remove but can be stiff and you may need a tool" so not easy or quick then 🙄😠 Like what is the point of a "quick link" if you're gonna need one more extra tool just for that??? When you already need to have a quite expensive pin pusher because cheap ones bend 😤
The weird thing was that when I removed the chain and tried to reinstall, the chain didn’t fit afterwards. I felt like I was a mechanic in the Twilight Zone.
First Name what’s more inappropriate is your spelling of ‘mildly’. ‘Midley’ is not a word and a wildly incorrect way to spell ‘mildly’. Secondly, you didn’t add an apostrophe to the word ‘canels’. The correct way would be ‘canel’s’. Also, don’t try and be clever by saying a ‘dude’ is a camel’s foreskin; no one likes a smart arse.
@@rekrap098 been there done that and we are not talking about that. Mechanic's silly man. such girly men. Never wore gloves in my entire life. Only to weld.

Don’t you think if I had a pair of quicklink pliers that I would already know how to remove my quicklink chain?
AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ooh big brain
very smart comment
It's very hard to do without.. try shoe laces or brake cable but it's really hard
I somehow removed it, just by hands. I've loosened the chain by puting it in higher gear by hand and just squeezed it together.
If I had a chain tool , I wouldn't be here now. Give us a solution that does not require special tools
Bolt cutters sorted me out. Specialist tool. Yeah nah fuck off aye.
Real
Have you found a way?
Great. Clear straight forward explanations. No unnecessary stories for introduction.
THANK you. Just did this for the first time in my life, after watching this.

What about Shimano 10 speed with the one link that has a 'solid' pin ? Another video said to break at that link, not just any random link.
how do u re attach a quick link?
Just make sure everything is lined up do it in reverse then to get the last bit of it in place when it’s on your bike slam the cranks forward hard enough to u hear a pop or snap
I had done this on bikes when I was a kid but since forgotten.. Many thanks for the review!
Can you still use the quick link after removing it? Sorry for the question I'm just curious
If the chain is rusted, is it worth cleaning and how?
Thanks for any advice, currently rebuilding a bicycle for my son

What if you don’t have a “Chain tool” is there a DIY?

Thank you. Going to do this on the garage door chain that use the last locking mechanism, split link.
What if we don't have a chain tool
would that tool in the first chain work on any of the rivets or do i have to find the master link?
Yes, it does. There is no master link, so pick any one.
Thanks so much bro, was struggling with this for an hour then watched this video and just helped solve the problem

what does he have gloves on for? Too afraid to get his hands dirty what is this?
It's a company video he was probably told to have gloves on it looks more professional
Camden Osborn I wouldn’t really want to get my hands full of dirt and grease if I’m honest
What? Are you too afraid of gloves? :P
I use swarfega to get dirty grease off, well most of it. I’d rather wear disposable gloves for really dirty oily chains.
Alright but not everyone has a special tool or money to buy one
Each side, not either side.
Lol

why do silly people wear surgical gloves to do mechanic work??? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Because of all the grease that would ruin normal gloves.
