    As a NYer, I've purposefully taken Metro-North from Fordham to New Haven to get on a bus to go to Boston (rip Boltbus) just to experience the pure awesomeness of New Haven Union Station. **Much** better than the Port Authority or Penn Station, and the OTP of Metro-North is superior than the OTP of the subway.

    Those CT rail cars look so nice! When they first started CT Rail service in about 2018, the train cars weren't produced in time so they borrow decommissioned MBTA commuter rail cars which was a weird deja vu on my first ride as they had cleaned and painted the outside but changed nothing on the inside so it was like being back in the train cars of my very young childhood.

    There is a free shuttle bus between New Haven Union Station and the New Haven Green.
    The CT Rail Hartford Line is operated under contract from CTDOT by Transit America, which makes their joint ticketing with Amtrak interesting because the CT Rail Shoreline East is run under similar contract by Amtrak but does not have joint ticketing.
    The rolling stock for the Hartford line (which some now call the Springfield line) has always been a mix of cars that used to serve elsewhere, some MNRR, SLE, MBTA (MA) and VADOT cars. The same goes for the engines which come from MNRR & Amtrak.

    That note about business class having less legroom. Recently when I was on the Pennsylvanian the Business class car actually had less legroom then coach. It was like 100 dollars extra. I really tried to take advantage of the free drinks on that trip…

    • @connecticutmultimodaltrans8226
      @connecticutmultimodaltrans8226 2 года назад

      That's because coach cars on the Pennsylvanian are the longer-distance based Amfleet IIs as opposed to the business class cars which are Amfleet Is and used primarily on the NEC.

      Oh yeah, business class on the Pennsylvanian is a scam, more so than other business class on Amtrak. I guess it's useful on the Harrisburg to NYC segment since they would put you in the Amfleet I for that bit, but the Amfleet IIs have SO much legroom that it's so not worth it for anywhere west of Harrisburg!

  • @RoadCone411

    I live in Milford on the New Haven Line and we certainly don’t feel like New York. Sure we have dozens of trains a day to grand central but we also have a large town green that feels more like Litchfield than New Rochelle, if you see where I’m going. And, unlike New Haven, our green isn’t a giant cemetery to my knowledge.
    As for sports teams, in my unofficial poll of local friends, neighbors and coworkers, we’re about 50% New York (split between Yankees/Mets, Jets/Giants etc) and 40% Boston teams (Red Sox, Patriots, etc), and about 10% everybody else. Not sure why Cowboys fans live here but some do.
    I would also argue that 75% follow UConn basketball, it is the state school and has had a lot of success after all, and there are still a small but vocal group of Hartford Whalers supporters around…I realize this may have been before you were born but they up and moved the franchise from Hartford to Raleigh and become the Hurricanes in the late 1990s. Some people can’t let go.

      CT was cheap and chose the lower bid of Transit America and Alternative Concepts, Inc as a joint venture to run the state trains instead of Amtrak. It's weird and a little clunky but judging by how Amtrak is doing with staffing and equipment (no spare Amfleets), it was a good decision. Maybe some day when they have more equipment they can have Amtrak run them all. Either way CT pays for both services. Massachusetts only pays for the Amtrak services that go to Springfield, not for the CTrail trains that terminate there.
