- Chicken feathers for fly tying is basic, so it is the first video of my new Beginning Fly Tying Series. It is a must see video before you make a trip to your local fly shop to buy feathers or make a purchase online. See what feathers are available to fly tyers, where they are used, and how they compare in the marketplace.

Thanks Chris for the video. I like how you answer viewer's questions. So many video nmakers are done when the video is done. I learn as much sometimes from answers to viewer's questions as from the video itself.
My pleasure!
Thank you Chris I always enjoy & learn from you.
Thanks for watching!
THANKS HELPS OUT BEING NEW TO FLY TYING
Glad I could help!

+mntecristo Thank You!
Super helpful! Thanks!
Great video Chris. I am a new fly tier and I don't have enough money to go out and buy feathers for hackle tying. My friend has chickens and guineas. I was hoping that you could make a video explaining what breeds of chickens that can be used for tying. If you can help me it would be an amazing help. Thank you and keep making videos.
Thanks Ashton, The breed will not necessarily dictate quality, but they are important for color. Plymouth Rock are the black and white called grizzly. Rhode Island Reds are the favorite for brown, and the Buffs are the tan and ginger colors. The best feathers for fly tying come from roosters under about six months of age, because the feathers are still small and fine. Hens that have gone through their first molt have the best soft hackle feathers, and the older a Guinea gets, the bigger and better the feathers get for salmon and steelhead flies. Hope this helps.
i love your videos .. thank you for educating me on things that i love ... :)
Glad you like them, and thanks for watching!
Excellent information. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
How old is a rooster need to be before you harvest the hackle feathers? Is it one year or two years? And why?
That doggo is the goodest girl
Hi Ashton,
Anything that is stiff enough for the hackle to be wrapped around, or is long enough to be held straight up while wrapping the hackle. Most pain yarn will work because you can use a piece long enough to hold up, and cut off the remainder after the fly is tied without wasting a lot of material. If you happen to have a retriever around, the hair from the back of a yellow lab works great. Just don't cut it from anyplace too obvious!
Hello Chris, when tying parachute flies what are some of the materials that can be substituted for materials like calf body and tail hair?
First time for me to see a puppy used as a chicken stand-in.
Do you Dye any of your capes? I started when I purchased a very nice white saddle .. I dyed it a Dunn and had very good luck.. Nice video..
I dye a lot of feathers and fur. I learned the techniques from Bob Borden, who started and owns Hareline Dubbin, so that video is in the works.
Indeed... That is how Bob got his start.. It is interesting what you can do. I just did a string of Schlappen feathers for a guy who ties allot of Articulated Streamers. They were a light tan with darker areas and I dyed them Sunburst. They really came out beautiful .. Thank You! Look forward to that video..
as a fl y tying store it been very hard to get the grizly feathers the past 6 years as the fashion industry I am told buy every thing up in the grizly, leaving very poor grades if any left for the fly tying industry
Luckily, for us, the hair styles with feathers braided in seems to have faded, so the growers that put extra production space to use should have an abundance after this year's harvest. Hopefully!
Can you take these feathers from a chicken without killing them?
Only if you want really unhappy chickens!
@@chrismihulka-nwfishingstuf3852 lol. Well, I've collected hackles from them
