    This is how I use peppermint oil spray in my vegetable garden. I use it on my cucumbers, beans, squash and zucchini. I explain the benefits, the recipe mix and show you how I apply it. I find. so far, it is effective at repelling and managing spider mites & aphids, decreasing the numbers of vine borers & squash bugs and at masking plant scents to keep other 'bad bugs' from finding host plants. It is an effective repellent and I hope you will let me know what it is doing for your gardening. I want to collect more information.

    I continue to use this every other day. As our temp have gotten past 100 a few squash bugs have appeared. But in previous years I would have already lost all of my crop. I have been using Basil essential oil on my tomatoes once a week which I think is beneficial. Second picking - green tomatoes- are on my plants now. You might check this for me as you have done for the peppermint oil. Perhaps rosemary or tea tree oil might prove beneficial as well. Thanks for trying this. I am amazed at the difference it has made to my squash plants.

      I have also tried using clove, oregano and patchouli oil, mainly because it's what I've had on hand before bothering to get peppermint oil. Anything that puts out a good masking smell, I guess. But people swear by peppermint.

    I looked online for what oils are good at repelling or eliminating garden insects and found that most that have a heavy smell should work. Peppermint, eucalyptus, cloves, cinnamon, rosemary, and tea tree oil all are claimed to help rid the garden of common bugs. I found one from Dollar general called "Defense" that has lemon oil, eucalyptus oil, cinnamon bark oil, rosemary oil, and clove oil. Also picked up a peppermint oil as well. Have not used either yet but I am hoping for the best.

    Hi Gary, I have a couple of questions, but firstly, thank you SO much for your very informative videos. They are very helpful, even in Australia 😊
    I've checkeked a number of the comments, in case someone had already asked this question, but didn't find one.
    Q 1: Do you wait until the next morning or later in the day after hosing the leaves off, OR is it OK/effective to spray the peppermint oil on while the leaves are still wet (wouldn't that dilute the peppermint oil & effectiveness)?
    Q 2: What do you suggest to use to get rid of minute fruit flies (partying in my very young cucumber plants)?
    Thanking you in advance 😊
    Blessings to you & your family 🙋‍♀️

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  11 месяцев назад

      You can spray them wet. It wont change the effectiveness in any way of concern. I would try peppermint oil on the tiny fruit flies with maybe a bit more soap. Soap and oil should break up the party. Good luck and thanks for watching. Cheers.

    Hi Gary,
    I've been watching your videos for awhile and really enjoy them. I especially like the detail you put into the videos. This video caught my eye because I like using natural pest control methods. I am not sure if you've heard of Dr. Earth's Final Stop spray - it very works well to repel pests and it has peppermint oil in it.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  5 лет назад

      Peppermint oil probably years and years and years. Neem oil has to be stored indoors and is good IMO for 2 seasons. It thickens to and has to be warmed with tap water sometimes.

    Hi Gary, I either mix peppermint oil with Neem oil or with Baking Soda and spray once a week. My question is....if the peppermint oil masks the smell of the plant so the bad insects can't find it, do the good pollinators have a problem finding your plants? Second question is can you use too much/too often?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 лет назад +1

      Good questions. Some insects work on smell other work on sight. Good insects, generally speaking, look for flowers. That is why they are so brilliantly colored.

    1st yr to try vertical growing!! I clipped most(still nervous) lol of all the leaves that were below the flowers. I have a compost bin close by, could I compost these if not diseased or would the smell attract what I'm trying to keep away ?

    Hi Gary just found your channel and subscribed, great info and much appreciated, I have a question, can you make the peppermint spray and add the neem oil in at the same time, do you think both in the same spray would be just as effective, kind regards Carol

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 лет назад

      Thanks so much for subbing. So I haven't done it. It adds more oil to the plant in one spray. I don't think it would matter. I personally like neem alone as the let the azadirachtin sit on the leaves in purest form. If you try a mix, test spray it too first before covering everything.

I mixed this up, sprayed a bunch of my pumpkin leaves then read about how oils can be really toxic....good grief! (I dont use any chemicals at all).....do you spray just the foliage? Is it ok to get this on my kale/salad crops that are near what Im spraying.....do you spray your fruits/veggies with it as well or just the foliage? Thank you!!
