  • This one's a bit overdue since I filmed it a few years ago. It's also a bit long. I aimed it at those of you who are rebuilding a carb like this for the first time or for those of you that like step-by-steps.
    Feel free to ask questions or make comments below.

    This is a really excellent video Ian, thanks for posting! I just got my 2002 Mantis out of storage, and I'm struggling to get it to run the way I know it can. Rebuilding the carb may be on my list of projects soon, it's so nice to see somebody taking the time to do that and explain it all to the rest of us. Thanks again!

    Good video. Nice working surface too ha. I like to wrap a cloth around these small carbs whenever I'm spraying carb cleaner to prevent uncontrollable overspray.

    Great video. I just bought a new carb, plug, air filter element, all hoses, gaskets, fuel filter, and gas tank fuel line grommet for $13. It took 10 minutes to replace everything.

    Thanks for the tip. 1 1/4 turns out starting point. I got a carburetor off Amazon and it was obviously returned. Between them tinkering and/or me tinkering to get it to start, there was no way it was going to work.

    Thanks for this video Ian! I'm still stumped though - I can get it to fire up and it idles quickly for 3 or 4 secs, dies, and then I can't start her again? Any ideas??

  • @Donedreaminit
    @Donedreaminit 8 лет назад

    Did you install the fuel lines into the tank as you had them going through the grommet?
    The feed was longer and the other two are less than an inch through?
    I just picked up a tiller and I am missing some parts and some clarification would be very helpful!
    Amazing write-up, thank you

    Thanks for the video. This is by far the best one on you tube that covers every thing involved in rebuilding this carb. I wish i had found this a month ago.I took my SV-4B type1E in and had a small engine guy rebuild it...cost me 72 bux ! Where did you get the parts and is there a parts # for this kit?

      Dennis B. thanks for the feedback! My carb is on a Mantis tiller so I just tried calling Mantis. They were very helpful and had everything needed at a very reasonable price. The rebuild kit had a Mantis number and but I can't locate it, sadly.

    Great video Ian. The only thing that was not clear to me was where the check valve came from and belongs.. I'm working on the same model for a friend.

    • @IanSlatas
      @IanSlatas  8 лет назад +1

      +anniversary4 Thanks! The check valve is the brass cylinder component that the high jet screws into. To test the circuit use a piece of hose over the jet and blow with your mouth. If clear then try to suck back. If you can the check valve is defective. In general if it is working you can hear a faint click. If you can suck back it is bad news for the idle circuit as it means a new check valve. You can press out the old one with a drill press and a punch or an old drill bit shank that matches the diameter of the brass check valve. Hopefully yours is ok and just needs a bit of soaking! As bad off as this carb was it didn't need a new check valve thankfully!

    I have a mantis that I replaced the fuel kit that ordered from the mantis company. The unit would run for 5 to 10 seconds and shut down. I also replaced the air filter and spark plug. Also I try to adjust the high and low screws, still no good . Called Mantis and was told to put the high and low screws to factory specs. Still a no go 🙅‍♂️. I know the high and low screws are a little sensitive. Do you have any idea what I need to do? I will try to work on it Monday. Could use your help 😊.
    Thank you 🙏🏾

    Sounded really good after your repair, and cheap :-)
    I did my Briggs&Stratton 3.5 classic lawnmower carb, it had a diaphragm+gasket, the diaphragm was deader than a doornail lol.
    It was very simple in comparison to what you did last year, a £2.50 gasket/diaphragm made it purr like a cat with cream lol :-D
    Have you watched the donnyboy73 channel, he does all small engines :-)

    Thanks for the video! best out there. Only problem I have is when re-installing the carb to the block ,carefully tighten the
    two mounting screws an the choke binds,Backed them off an the carb is loose.Tried a little oil at the swivel point, no luck.
    Any thoughts?

    • @IanSlatas
      @IanSlatas  7 лет назад

      Thanks very much!
      It sounds like perhaps the order of the choke and washers on the fastener might be incorrect or maybe a washer is missing allowing the assembly to bind. I'll check the order on my tiller since it's not clear in the video and get back to you.

    Ian, I have to ask: Why did you take the tines off to work on the carb?

    • @IanSlatas
      @IanSlatas  8 лет назад

      +SEI RePower This was part of a general servicing. There were blocks of concrete wedged in the tines when I received the tiller, haha. I had the whole thing apart to free it, top up gear oil, get familiar with the machine, etc. Thanks for asking

    • @IanSlatas

      Jordan Stone If it's stuck from grime and old gas soaking it in carb cleaner for a day or two should free it up. Sorry for the late reply!

    I have a sv-4 engine without a primer,and being and older model I would like to replace carb with the sv-4b model.Are they compatible??

    • @IanSlatas
      @IanSlatas  8 лет назад

      I'd call Mantis directly and ask. They're very helpful. Having a primer is definitely a plus. So long as the carb mounts to the intake in the same way it should be compatible.

    • @hectornagano1819
      @hectornagano1819 8 лет назад +1

      Thanks Ian. The only modifications I'll have to make to my machine, is drill an x-tra hole in order to accommodate, for the primer fuel return line, back into the tank.Thanks for all the help.

    • @IanSlatas
      @IanSlatas  8 лет назад

      Any time. When I rebuilt mine they sent me a new grommet with holes for everything. If you're rebuilding might as well make sure the fuel lines and fuel filter are in good shape. My lines were quite brittle.

    Next time perhaps don't do that over a gravel bed and focus the camera? You did the trick but It could have been loads better ;-)

    • @IanSlatas
      @IanSlatas  4 года назад

      Nah. Gravel's never let me down. All of the finest machine shops and repair shops are set up exactly as mine is. All of the very tiny parts were definitely carelessly tossed in the gravel and definitely not placed off-camera on the mat seen at the start of the video. Definitely use carb cleaner inside with closed doors to limit potential distractions of all kinds. Working outdoors is reckless and you run the risk of enjoying the day while you work. "What kind of bird was that?"
      Camera focus is overrated. It removes any aire of mystery and almost eliminates misinterpretation from how-to videos. Where's the art in that?
