I just make super basic edits for exposure, shadows, highlights, and a starting point for color, the rare times I use color. After that, I bounce it out to photoshop for finer work. But I'm mostly posting to instagram on my black and white account, and much of that is documentary-style photography with minimal edits.
I mostly use Adobe Camera Raw, and Lightroom second. And of course, Photoshop. I thought about saying that I print my photos and then edit them on the paper with whiteout and crayons. 🤣🤣
I wish I knew I could have used the dropper tool to remove some of a mask the other week. I spent over 8 hours removing parts of a background from a mask on a bridge I photographed. That would have saved so much time and frustration going over it numerous times trying to get perfect lines.Yep just went back to the photo and copied the original to re edit and 3 clicks instead of 8hours of brush tool so much easier.
My jaw hit the floor when you did the sailboat mask and removed the sky using color range. Shooting a lot of aerial photography, that is a game changer for me. Thanks!
Only recently upgraded my lightroom and soon as i found this masking tool i was like wow what pictures have i taken in the past that i can now make so much better!
I agree, 1000% these LightRoom masking tools are real gamechangers! My “go to” masking tool is Color Range for a large area in a landscape photo. If it selects too much color range, I simple use the “Amount” slider to reduce the range and if that’s not enough, I’ll use the “Subtract” on the created mask and pick the Brush, works great on Milky Way photos!
I have watched your videos for a long time and have learned quite a bit. But I think this is one of your most useful videos for everyone and not just people interested in cars. Thank you.
I've known about the object select tool but using the color range to subtract from the masking is something new for me and I'm super excited to use it! Thanks for the tip Mark!
Mark, your Lightroom object masking tutorial is excellent. You have distilled the process to make masking in Lightroom very easy. I appreciate your expertise and excellent presentation. You have clearly enhanced my capabilities and I thank you. Al Lehman
I have been using the object selection tool a lot but have never subtracted using color range. Brilliant! Can't wait to use the great tips you've been putting out recently. Outstanding videos and teaching!
Great overview of object selection Mark and thank you as always. A thought about the iceberg, in particular, in this example, but it can apply to LR's object selection in general. The outer edge of the iceberg, where it touches the sky or water around it, ends up being a little too sharp/crunchy in terms of a transition, because the object selection is so precise; almost too precise. Especially when the subject is backlit or side-lit like this one, the light will naturally kind of "wrap around" the edge of the object, and that makes those sharp transitions at the edges a little strange. One way around it (literally) is to subtract with a high-feather brush at maybe 50% flow and just gently remove the sharp edge of the object mask so that there is a slightly more gradual transition between the edge of the object and the background.
I have to admin that in the first to minutes of this video i thought there would be nothing new for me to learn here... (Since i already use select object quite a lot) I couldn't be more wrong😅 thanks a lot for these great tips😊
fantastic !!- Thank you Mark -I'm always learning something about lightroom with your videos! Adiitional question : have you done one on luminance mask ? I rarely using it and don't know very well how to use it
This was a very informative video! I'm just waiting for my Macbook Pro to arrive this morning and then I'm going to download Lightroom Classic after I get the computer. I'm fairly new to photography, around 2 years now and have been using Lightroom Mobile on my Galaxy Tab s7 to edit which isn't the best thing to use to get the most out of my post processing. Videos like this are so awesome to teach us newer photographers how things work so we can enjoy this hobby even more. Thank you!
Thanks Mark for your sharing. Otherwise, I will still be struggling to use the pain brush for a situation like this. Have a good day! Vincent, from Singapore.
I mostly use LrC with a little Photoshop for focus stacking. Once again you've provided another tool for my editing, referring to the sailboat mask subtraction. Thank you and keep up the great videps.
Great masking tips. This will save me so much time. I currently use the Add and Subtract feature to refine masks. I hope I can get it to work as quick and easy as you did.
Amazing! Just what I need for a photograph I've taken of an oil platform in the Cromarty Firth (Scotland) > taken from the shore in Cromarty. Thank you for sharing....
Another great video, very well explained and presented, bravo. Thank you very much for also providing the brilliant Colour Calibration video gratis. A topic rarely covered which makes a huge difference to a global editing workflow. Please keep on with the videos they are really good.👍
Brilliant and thanks for this video Mark! Wish I knew this yesterday when I was editing some fiddly subjects. Still finding my way around Lightroom so it was very instructive 😊
Thanks Mark! Very enlightening, and you are right, I think this is a very under utilized capability within the masking environment! I’ve used it just briefly a couple of times in my masking workflow, and have seem to just forget about it! I’m going to bring this front and center now that I’ve seen this video as I can really see how it enhances the capabilities of speed and accuracy within the masking workflow! Thanks again! Great job!👍🏻😃
Love this feature! Ive been using those tools for a while now and its so good for really fine tuning the selections. You can use the object selection and color range tool for so many different uses.
The best thing is combinations are not one trick ponies. Colour range might suit one picture, luminance another. Then a linear gradient placed in the right place can add shape - say on a windmill photographed on a day with flat light. It's only a couple of years ago the only shapes we had were radial and linear gradients!
Holy smokes, I had no idea I could use that color selection to remove the background. I've been fighting with this for a while lately. Thank you! Hopefully one of these days I can join you on one of your events.
Really great video. I had no idea you could do this. The way you edited the sailboat was an eye opener. I'll definitely be incorporating this methodology into my workflow. Thank you.
🌟QUICK QUESTION: What do you use to Edit your Photos?
I just make super basic edits for exposure, shadows, highlights, and a starting point for color, the rare times I use color. After that, I bounce it out to photoshop for finer work. But I'm mostly posting to instagram on my black and white account, and much of that is documentary-style photography with minimal edits.
Mostly Lightroom Classic, with a little PS mixed in for object removal.
A mix, Capture one, but I also have Lightroom and Photoshop.
Color Range in LightRoom
I mostly use Adobe Camera Raw, and Lightroom second. And of course, Photoshop.
I thought about saying that I print my photos and then edit them on the paper with whiteout and crayons. 🤣🤣
Yip works great thanks you can also select subtract sky also works well

That would have saved so much time and frustration going over it numerous times trying to get perfect lines.Yep just went back to the photo and copied the original to re edit and 3 clicks instead of 8hours of brush tool so much easier.
I fully agree about the object selection tool. However, I had not thought that subtract colour range could be so effective. Thank you.
Excellent video, Mark. I love the new tools in LR for object selection. Thanks for sharing your techniques.

Agreed! Pretty incredible tools

Jaw drop over here. Just realized I'm running version 10.2 over here. Thanks for showing me what the future looks like
the selecting tool in LR became incredible. at the point that it makes look the one in PS primitive.
I find myself savin hours every week
Mark, your Lightroom object masking tutorial is excellent. You have distilled the process to make masking in Lightroom very easy. I appreciate your expertise and excellent presentation. You have clearly enhanced my capabilities and I thank you.
Al Lehman
What a fantastic tip on cleaning up more difficult masks. I had no idea and can't wait to try it. Thanks Mark !
Oh wow! My mind has been blown. Thank you for sharing. Greatly appreciated.
I have been using the object selection tool a lot but have never subtracted using color range. Brilliant! Can't wait to use the great tips you've been putting out recently. Outstanding videos and teaching!
I love the brush object selection. With object such as the iceberg you can often just kind of wave the brush around over the object. Brilliant!
Wow!! Thank you. Saves so much time and cannot reproduce such accuracy manually. Thank you so much Mark :)
I never knew about the colour selection to remove background! So glad you opened my eyes, thank you Mark!!
Lightroom, and now thanks to you I feel more confident and enabled to make changes.
Love hearing this - thanks Thomas!
Thank you so much Mark for explaining Masking so easily! It is definitely the best tool in Lightroom
I agree with you - object is also my favourite tool. But I should get used to the colour picker, that’s my learning from today’s video. 👍🏼
Great overview of object selection Mark and thank you as always.

Thank you. I do very little landscape photography, but I always learn a lot about lightroom from your videos.
Yessss! I never thought of that! Well done. Ive been frustrated with that very flaw in the object select mask
I did not know Lr had these. Now I need to try it out. Thank you for your videos. They are easy to understand which is awesome.
Awesome ! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Mark! Awesome pointers!
Thanks so much!

Thanks for the tips., I am using lightroom for my digital and photoshop for my film scans
I love this tool also, but you helped me to better understand how it can work for me!
Thanks for this. I’ve used object selection but never considered using color or luminance as a refinement tool.
Thanks Mark for your sharing. Otherwise, I will still be struggling to use the pain brush for a situation like this. Have a good day! Vincent, from Singapore.

So you chose the color range of the green mask to remove the unwanted part of the sail boat mask?
Great video Mark! Nice demo of the object select mask tool - very cool! Thanks!😊
Thanks so much!
Holy smokes, I had no idea I could use that color selection to remove the background. I've been fighting with this for a while lately. Thank you! Hopefully one of these days I can join you on one of your events.

Yet another great video. You are by far my favorite subscription that I have in RUclips. So much great information and tips.
That means a lot - thank you!
@@MarkDenneyPhoto have you been to the Red River Gorge in Kentucky? That’s where I’m from.
Really great video. I had no idea you could do this. The way you edited the sailboat was an eye opener. I'll definitely be incorporating this methodology into my workflow. Thank you.
Thanks Richard!
Really good and helpful advise!!!
