Born in Melbourne came to Aotearoa as a baby. Grew up in a marae setting. In his teens his family went back to Australia where he won Australia Idol. He was marketed as a pop singer in Australia but the execs told him he was too Maori and not to be so brown. He didn't re-sign and returned home. He's done very well without compromising his heritage. Absolute F* U to the record company. Stan has proved just because an artist can't fit their fast profit mould of a record company doesn't mean the artist isn't talented. It means the record company is dispensable.
not surprised the aussie record company said he was too Maori - they still have an issue with indigenous culture at home or abroad - glad he returned to his roots and whakapapa

If you go back theough his 14yrs of music, he has already gone through the record company pressures and did put out mainstream music. All of it good, but he has now taken back creative control on all he is doing. Starting 6-7yrs ago? Everything he does shows his progression and growth, and belief and confidence.
I adore & admire not only his vocals & and songwriting, but most of all, his genuine love & respect for his culture, heritage & elders. A truly remarkable man. Great reaction to this fabulous artist!
During their isolation from the world prior to colonization, our Māori ancestors had adapted our culture around the ways of the native birds of Aotearoa New Zealand, much like our traditional garments worn today are made of their feathers and Te Reo Māori is spoken/chanted/sung much like bird song. For example, the pūkana (i.e. bulging eyes, protruding of chin for women and the tongue/teeth for men) is used to exude passion, ferocity and intimidation and was adopted from the attacking style of the ruru (morepork/owl). Ruru are considered spiritual kaitiaki (or guardians and protectors).
If you're American come to New Zealand it's a wonderful place me and my class at Galatea school ❤we love this song every morning we want to sing this song it's beautiful waiata isn't it bro

We love Stan precisely because he's not going to sell out...we are a colonized ppl and we've had a real gutsful of that. He belongs to the Tūhoe tribe and they are super staunch because they were amongst the last Māori tribes to have contact with the Europeans. The Europeans (Pākehā) invaded Tūhoe territory twice before: once in the 1800s where they set fire to grains and caused a big famine and killed ppl, and once in the early 2000s for accusations of terrorism against the NZ govt, which was a LIE! But yeah, Stan knows his history and that's why his music is so authentic and his culture is the point of difference in this society today.
