When I first started low carb /keto I was scared off protein because of gluconeogenesis. So I limited myself to under 50 grams a day. It was fine for a few months and then I started to hurt. I mean really really hurt. The muscles in my thighs and hips were like steel cables and it was an agony. I couldn't sit because it hurt. Driving to work was a nightmare and once I got there I hobbled in because I could not straighten my hips. I also went through bouts of horrible horrible hunger and nothing I did would make it go away.
And then one day I caved. My husband and I went to a steak house for dinner one night and I ate an entire 12oz ribeye and small salad. After we got home I ate the left over steak my husband had brought home.
The next day the state of my muscles wasn't so bad and my hunger was much less than it had been for a while.
Now it took a few more times of this happening before I put 2 and 2 together. And I went through it again when I started doing OMAD without good planning and went significantly low on protein (30g a day approx) for about a month. All the pain started coming back again.
After learning my lesson, I now eat protein until I am satisfied. No tight muscles, no pain.

The quads, thighs and calves are tight AF and i sometimes have such systemic muscle pain that i don't want anyone to touch me. Just misery. So, im back to front loading my day with protein and just to be sure i have a source of 30g protein on me if im away from home, i carry 2 scoops of a pea protein powder that i can dump into a small bottle of water, shake and im done and dusted.

So there were definitely times when my system had enough protein. Didn't negatively influence my blood sugar.
Not sure what regulates the amount of your gluconeogenesis, maybe you had other imbalances? I think it also has a lot to do with workout and meal timing. If your body needs the protein there isn't so much for your liver to change into glucose. If your body doesn't need the protein it probably uses it mainly for fuel.

But this theory has already been proposed: The Protein Leverage Hypothesis. Since protein is satiating, obese people overeat because they aren't satiated or because they are hungry and overeat to get enough protein. So in my opinion, you left out another symptom of protein deficiency: obesity. Yes obese people should probably eat more. Eat more protein.

I know this video is a bit aged but I wanted to suggest something. Protein per 100g of beef is roughly 33g depending on the cut. Grams per ounce is 28.3. So I sit down to mow down some delicious grass finished chuck roast and decided to weigh it as I ate. The meal consisted of 440g of beef, fat included plus some butter on the side and a 3 oz can of kipper snacks. In the beef it calculates roughly to 132g of protein. At 200 lbs body weight I need about 200g protein per day. With the fish, beef, and a few eggs for my other meal I figure I’m doing alright on the protein levels. I suspect I’m not getting enough fat though. Measuring that will be my next quest for info. Always appreciate your videos @kenberrymd…I started carnivore (no dairy) a week before thanksgiving as my lab results showed I was potentially pre-diabetic at 6.1 A1C with what I thought were some questionable lipid numbers. 2 more months and I’ll do the blood again but I’m -24 lbs and digging what I’m seeing in the mirror these days. Peace and love y’all 😀

According to a recent low carb down under video - the whole world is not consuming enough protein as a large proportion are consuming more plant based protein which has limited protein components (lysine etc) and thus the excess components are burnt as fuel rather than providing the necessary amounts for muscle growth, body repair and daily use.

Dr Berry, after 10 yrs on blood pressure meds, while being quite active, my BP didn't move and my weight slowly crept up. Last year, a progressive GP who I had visited previously was available for a consult after my previous GP had moved on. As he'd seen me previously, he could see the (not good) changes. He asked if I was willing to make some changes, and he was pretty sure we could drop the BP (and therefore the meds), drop the weight and get my pre-diabetic markers down and get me healthier in general.
Fast forward six months and through adherence to the keto diet and returning to some better lifestyle practices, I dropped 17kg, dropped my BP and meds and no longer need my CPAP machine.
Fast forward a further 12 months and I've kept the weight off, am fitter and stronger than I've ever been and continue to work at it.
Your videos, along others and the advice from my GP are a constant source of interesting information and tips. Thanks for your videos and expertise 👍

So glad you mentioned not using shakes, bars etc as protein sources. Had a family member, who had a gastric sleeve and has been using protein shakes for several years, following the advice of the medical support staff after the procedure. Long story short, she had an issue with kidney stones! She had several procedures using lithotripsy to break up her huge and chronic issues with kidney stones, and reoccurring infections. Finally they (another set of medical staff) mentioned what I suspected, the protein shakes may be the culprit. I think the medical fixes to her metabolic issues and associated health problems caused a whole different set of problems. I am taking notes, in order to optimize my health by fixing my own metabolic problems and associated health issues, using my diet and activity. Dr Berry, I would appreciate your perspective on the use of surgery for weight loss. What has been your experience working with people who've had the surgery. I am resolute in learning what the 'proper human diet' is and figuring out a way to attain the weight best suited for my overall health.

Àudra, my aunt's friend died from gastric bypass surgery. It is not worth it to remove body parts and organs that you were born with, parts humans evolved to have. Every part of your body has a purpose. The appendix contains every single bacteria and germ you ever came into contact with. The appendix will also absorb water, fluids.
People can't digest food well and they can't absorb nutrients well. They often have to take supplements to replace real nutrition from food, and yet people want to destroy themselves to lose weight. After surgery, some people will gain all of the weight back. Not worth it.
In Florida, doctors told a friend that she needed to have her gall bladder removed. Her gall bladder was healthy. Now she suffers without her gall bladder and this doctor did it to many other people. He just wanted the money. She was so angry that there was no need to remove an important organ that allows her to digest food properly and absorb nutrients.
Even if gall bladder is full of stones, don't remove it. You will have more health problems later, like my aunt. They stones are coming from the liver. Dr. Hulda Clark has cheap simple way to remove stones from liver and the gall bladder. There is always a better, safer, natural way to cure a health problem. She also has program for kidney stones.
There is also a herb called Stone Breaker, and there are many other ways to heal , lose weight and so on.

I actually had a theory that said that obesity was caused by not eating enough protein and fat. I found out that this was called the Protein leverage hypothesis. The problem I have with the calories in calories out model of obesity is that you might wind up eating less protein and fat and wind up starving because those macronutrients alleviate hunger and you could wind up eating more. In my opinion, in any diet, we should start out eating more protein and fat before we cut out carbohydrates. And yes, I think that obesity is also a sign you aren't eating enough protein. I also think that the problem with processed foods is that the processed foods take out nutrients and sometimes add toxins, therefore we become malnourished and eat more calories to compensate for this malnourishment. Therefore, I think the problem we have here is too much starvation, not gluttony.

I’m in school now getting a degree in in gerontology and minor in nutrition. Not only do the nutrition textbooks tell us that the recommended amount of protein is .08g per KG of body weight BUT that most Americans EXCEED the amount. They say that so no one will actually calculate the amount we are consuming because if we did; we would see that we are not getting enough protein

I think you made a typo because at only .08 grams per KILOGRAM = .04 grams per POUND (1 KG = 2.2 Pounds) a 150 pound person would only need 6 grams of protein per day?!?!? That’s the equivalent of only ONE (large) EGG! The usual RDA is 0.8 grams per KG (= 0.4 grams per pound) meaning that for a 150 pound person, they need 60 grams of protein per day! Still too low.

    How do I compute grams of protein? 70 kilos x 2 = 140 grams (@ 4.5 to 5 oz) of protein.
But what % of beef, lamb, chicken, egg or cheese (roughly) does that equal?
Is there a reliable table of conversion for common, recommended foods?

Google "protein content of " Example steak has anywhere from 21-25% protein by weight. 100 grams of steak has roughly 25 grams protein.
Always have a source of fat when you eat protein; don't ever eat lean protein by itself
