Look at all the kids complaining about fake noise coming out the speakers and the price tag. BMW is still the benchmark and every car company has to come up with some sort of innovation to stay in the game, so BMW did what they could whilst working around stupid emission and safety laws. The new M3/M4 are still drivers cars at the end of the day, not just luxo-barges or bruiser cruisers. Don't like the sound, straight pipe it or go for the aftermarket set-ups. I'm just glad BMW is sticking to the 50/50 weight distribution, rear wheel drive, engine in the front, straight 6 engine (V8 was great too but straight 6 is more fitting), and best of all- still comes with a proper manual gearbox. All these factors are why I would buy it, despite the gimmicky speaker exhaust noise function. Plus, IMO in real life the car does NOT sound as bad as it does in videos. Great review once again XCAR and I think its fair to say that we need to give more time to the ///M twins and they will soon be legend, like all the ///M cars.
Actually only 2% of the noise comes from speakers. That is because BMW cars are too quite since many of the owners also want them to be relaxing long trip cruisers. So for the occasions when you floor it and want to hear some noise, it helps with speakers. Otherwise you could go with AMG and get even more power, loud engine, not so good handling, tire smoking and rock hard suspension so not so comfy, basically a muscle car. Or Audi RS with AWD and tones of understeer, so a safe and fast people transporter. But if you want a car that has sporty and engaging handling, fast, looks good, practical and good quality then nothing beats M-cars. There are cars that can do one of these things better but nothing comes close to do everything as good as M-cars.
bezor Ta 100% Agree with you brother. That speaker noise don't bother me at all !! Don't know what these kids are complaining about, I mean no one complains about the stupid noises that Gran Turismo does for all their games, whereas other games like Need for Speed ACTUALLY use real cars to put their noise samples into their games for realism.
To shut all these complainers up, the M division should have an exhaust option like the Porsche which increases the noise/grunt of the exhaust when turned on. Hopefully we'll see it as an option in the future.
I dont just want 1 i want 3 thats how much i love it. And Xcar thanks a million times for a great review as you have been the only British reviewers to do this car in longer than 5 mins video.
When V8 came everybody was angry at BMW for giving up the IL 6. Now it's the other way. And only 2% of the noise comes from speakers. TWO %. That is because the cars are too quite inside due to owners wanting relaxing long trip cruises. So the speakers help for the occasions you want to floor it. Nothing beats the M-cars combination of sporty and engaging handling, fast, good looks, practical and good quality. We all know it and they all turn to be classics. ALL OF THEM.
I test drove one a few weeks ago at a BMW special invitation day in Herefordshire and the car is absolutely mad when you gun for it but its a lovely drive and a great drivers car!
I actually got to Say that im a Huge AMG fan and this New M4 it's quite impressive. The only big downdownside is the exhaust but of course is a turbo charge engine its not going to sound as good as the old generation E92 Natural Aspirated engine.
The exhaust sound I actually like, but the interior sound is a little disappointing as it sounds fake, because it is. Instead of playing fake engine sounds through the stereo, BMW should at least try piping induction sound into the cabin as other manufactures have done. But the car does look really nice and thank god for the manual option :)
I agree; instead of dicking around trying to play the exhaust note through the speakers, they could'v put in those hours working & improving on the actual exhaust note.
kuruptzZz You must be blind, because every youtube video of the M4 has youtube coments saying that the sound is rubish, and those coments have way more thumbs up... So you're the one that's on drugs, because you see more coments saying that people don't like the sound, that people that do like. BMW inline six until now, ALL OF THEM sounded absolute gorgeous... even the turbocharged 335i and 135i did sound pretty good. The 1M has basicly the same engine as the M4, but the 1M sounds sweet and smooth, but the M4 sounds like the exhaust is broken, absolute thrash. Don't know how BMW made the 1M sound so good and the M4 sound so crap, since they have pretty much the same engine...
Really nicely presented and put together. Just the right amount of (useful) tech figures to make me realise just how much of a marvel this car is. Great work!
To everyone whining about the noise, it's not like BMW has a choice. The EU has come down on car manufacturers to lower their consumption and emissions, so even if some are still fighting it, they soon will alway submit. 10 years later, the M4, the RS5 and the C-AMG will be something like 3.0 L with 10 turbos and KERS. It's the future. Get used to it.
Also, find this "BMW M4 - GRIP - Folge 277" on youtube. It's in German but they let the engine be heard much more than this guy does in this video. I'd say it sounds good.
Sure, but the sound is ugly too, not just quiet. Doesn't have the great V8 burble of the last gen, the awesome wail of the E36 M3 (or any number of other inline-6 BMWs) or even the energetic sound of the 4-cylinder E30 M3. This sounds like some kind of riced up Civic, and so does the new M5. M cars are simply not what they used to be.
All the people complaining about the sound.. I think it sounds great!! Also the Active sound is only 3% if the sound you hear onboard. What a beautiful car!!
Great review XCAR! However, I personally would prefer the actual M3 4 door version. IMO It looks better, meaner, I like the side profile better, has more room, is just as powerful, & retains the M3 name. But hey, That's just me though!
Great video. Touched on all the points people are questioning about the car. Would have been better if it was longer, but only so you could watch the car for longer.
How does this "Active Sound" *really* work? There seems to be so much confusion. And what if you're playing music in the car and you turn the music up? Does it also turn up the amplification of the engine note? You can't ever just listen to music? I'm confused... lol.
6:13 - 6:17 "It doesn't sound so good that you're gonna want to blip the throttle and have a little bit of a play". Dude, you're driving a DCT M4 - blipping the throttle isn't exactly an option.
Well I think it is great looking, and I stumbled on a review where the outdoor sound recording was better than in most other car reviews and they gave the M4 some pedal and well it sounded quite good to me, but from the cabin it does indeed miss some screaming. I saw one last week in the street where I live (Berlin) and I must say that I was surprised how big it has become - That I do not like (don´t know the numbers) but it looked like close to an Audi A5 in size - I hope that this does not continue in the future - It should not be bigger than it already has become IMO... - Never mind If I had the money I would still buy one.
***** I must say, you guys make some of my favourite reviews, it truly does show that you guys truly have allot of passion for these cars! keep up the good work lads!
As pointless as the distinction between the 3 and 4 series is, this new thing is really great. Looks fantastic, and I actually like that it's got an I6 instead of a V8. I just have a thing for an I6. Seems more fitting in terms of heritage too. I actually really like it in that yellow as well. I still can't get over that awkward looking bonnet seam though. I'm sure BMW would tell us the reason they did that is because of some kind of safety standard they have to follow, but plenty of other manufacturers can still make it look nice and comply with guidelines at the same time. So why can't BMW, who are supposed to be some of the best car designers in the world?
As a long time M fan, I'm slightly disappointed with the new ones. They just don't seem to push the envelope enough. AMG has really grabbed my attention over the last few years, and their track records and sales figures show that maybe they have become the "new M."
Shame about the noise... I really love how the S54 in my M coupe sounds raw, metal on metal, like a thousand bees in my brain when the tacho is anywhere between 5-8k. But that said, I don't get anywhere near 30mpg... :(
I'd like an M4 with gloss black paint, stock rims but chromed, chrome window trim, chrome grill with the black part of the grill also chromed, carbon fiber interior trim with the trim line in chrome, and the plastic part next to the rotating knob in body color black. that doesn't seem to be available from BMW, but maybe BMW individual can throw it together for me?
Saying 2015 m4 is a great car, fast and economical. But it never gives me the same level of of feeling compared to the new Merc and Audi's v8 4.0 bi-turbo. Being a sports car the sound from a v6 and a v8 can never compare.
Install an Akrapovic titanium exhaust and a K&N cold air intake and there you have it all the cool sound and induction noise you could possible want... it works for my car!
I would love this car it does everything you could want really...but for a sports car, noise is one of the most important factors really and if it doesn't sing would you just end up a little disappointed each time you put your foot down?
Alex, why didn't you mention that the engine sound inside the cabin is artificially produced through the sound system? Mechanical sound tuning is essential in order to optimize the hearing experience, but when manufacturers start using the sound systems, or extra sound modules inside the exhaust system, I feel a bit.. cheated.
as always nice review! interesting, short, informative. i absolutely love the new m4, even don't have a problem naming it different, remember the audi a4 convertible? it became later a5 convertible, even the a5 coupe appeared. about the car... the interior looks stunning, luxurious yet sporty, and the exterior, oh my, brutal. regarding the exhaust, as you say it is not loud enough, well the sound isolation in cabin is pretty god, outside it sounds great, plus if you want a hardcore exhaust you can always go aftermarket of just wait a couple of months until BMW M Performance studio unveils its official performance exhaust (in collaboration with Akrapović). Personally, would prefer a manual, as they are a dying breed, plus i haven't spend enough time driving manuals, still too young to be bored of it :) and you know what they say, "boys" don't grow up, the just become bigger. keep it up guys! viva la bmw m4! i want one so hard.
+ XCARFilms my brother bought a BMW e90 m3 and wow it's incredible. it's almost time for my first car in a year. I'm fortunate enough to have a 35k budget for my first car. Slab a super LOUD aftermarket exhaust system for the M4 would that solve the sound problem? But it still seems like the downsizing the engine and strap 2 turbos is still a failure to quite a few M3 lovers in the past. For me, no thx, I'll rather buy a well-maintained used M3 E92 even if that I have the money to buy 2 new M4s
If they already make supercars (as in the M cars) why then they feel the need to completely rearrange them beyond recognition (and crucially beyond what the rules allow without a special dispensation) to race proper sports cars in GT racing?
4:30 Wait what..... You.... Have to have traction control (or at least ESC) by law in many countries... Why.. What... A major manufacturer would never take away traction control...
It´s not a bad option or alternative, the Maserati is more special all together, but if I would need it as a daily driver and only have one car I would take a new M4 over and used Maserati.
Actually its not a bad alternative, But I think if ur gonna use a maserati as a daily driver, then the cost of maintaining that beast is gonna be much much higher than any M Car
I appreciate that the M4 and M3 are faster but surely as an all round car the new Cayman GTS is a better bet for the money? It sounds and feels a lot more fun to drive than this IMO

One of the best M4 reviews on the net. Straight to the point with no fluff.....who can deny the aesthetics of an M car.
So many stupid comments! M3, M4 or M 2.364........so what? The car looks gorgeous and goes like hell, that's all what counts.
This is my dream car.
(with all options, and BMW M Performance Exhaust)
Bmw always made some incredible cars
Love the Phoenix gold colour, it always looked great on the E46 and glad BMW have decided to use it once again.
I test drove one a few weeks ago at a BMW special invitation day in Herefordshire and the car is absolutely mad when you gun for it but its a lovely drive and a great drivers car!
I'll stick to my E46 M3. Hell of a car. Still love it like day one. Pure, raw and visceral.
Of course, fifa player
Johannes Gahara What does that have to do with anything? lol.
love your high quality videos! a lot of info and eyecandy is what I really want from a car channel. keep up that great work

Liking the Max Cooper sound at the end.

Porsche doesn't have fake noises, and they've had 10X the difficulty becoming compliant.
Aftermarket exhaust, done!
Sandouras EU will come down too one day :)

The colour looks awesome
Great video. Touched on all the points people are questioning about the car. Would have been better if it was longer, but only so you could watch the car for longer.
Where was this filmed? I didn't think the UK had huge mountains like that.
How does this "Active Sound" *really* work? There seems to be so much confusion. And what if you're playing music in the car and you turn the music up? Does it also turn up the amplification of the engine note? You can't ever just listen to music? I'm confused... lol.
Its good to see that BMW M is coming back to their roots, lightweight, great handling and performance cars, instead of overweight horsepower brutes.
Great looking car. Looks like a concept car from early 2000.
When wiggins was born
your reviews are awesome! glad i found ur channel
I don't see why BMW is having trouble with their exhaust notes to be honest.
***** AMG seem to handle noise better, even with the new turbocharged engines.
mornadu
Mercedes is always ahead of BMW.
mornadu AMG are automotive gods when it comes to exhausts, I doubt anyone will be coming anywhere close to them any time soon
An Akrapovic exhaust would more than get the noise or lack of it sorted if bothered you. Either way this is one hell of a car!
B3ansGuy ahem the JAG F TYPE V8!
6:13 - 6:17 "It doesn't sound so good that you're gonna want to blip the throttle and have a little bit of a play". Dude, you're driving a DCT M4 - blipping the throttle isn't exactly an option.
Which song is it at 3:21.....?
ohw god that car looks gorgeous and with the m performance exhaust the sounds does too!
fantastic location. Fitted the car perfectly
what about the prices? for example top M3 vs top M4

Stunning colour on that test car
As pointless as the distinction between the 3 and 4 series is, this new thing is really great. Looks fantastic, and I actually like that it's got an I6 instead of a V8. I just have a thing for an I6. Seems more fitting in terms of heritage too. I actually really like it in that yellow as well.

i Love this car. when i buy one im gonna buy a balck with black grill and laser lights like in the GTS. I love your videos. Subscribed.
What is the name of the watch you're wearing?
As a long time M fan, I'm slightly disappointed with the new ones. They just don't seem to push the envelope enough. AMG has really grabbed my attention over the last few years, and their track records and sales figures show that maybe they have become the "new M."
The best or nothing
M power
Bmw
What a perfect looking car .
The colour ist outstanding
Besides how it sounds, good lord this car is amazing! And even better that the sound is very easily fixable. BMW M4
Whats that big carbon fibre weave U on the engine?
The M3 looks better to me. Better flared arches, looks more purposeful.
HELL FUCKING NO
THE BACK OF THE M3 LOOKS LIKE SHIT
i can't wait for Wraith
The question is, will this be a legend like the E46 was? And I think the answer is no. Also, in my opinion the M3 looks better.
agreed
Yes and no
Shame about the noise... I really love how the S54 in my M coupe sounds raw, metal on metal, like a thousand bees in my brain when the tacho is anywhere between 5-8k. But that said, I don't get anywhere near 30mpg... :(

Can't wait to see this in person in a month. So excited :D my dads E46 M3 meets it successor only it's the M4 (M3 in my mind lol)

Nice car, but doesn't excite me. I'm sure with a few modifications it would be a hoot though.
Alex, why didn't you mention that the engine sound inside the cabin is artificially produced through the sound system?
Mechanical sound tuning is essential in order to optimize the hearing experience, but when manufacturers start using the sound systems, or extra sound modules inside the exhaust system, I feel a bit.. cheated.
Its not worth mentioning. Its only 3% of the sound you hear onboard.
Great review! Well done.
Side Mirrors' design is nice. Sharp and Sleek.
But.... Would you have one over an F-Type or a secondhand 911???
as always nice review! interesting, short, informative. i absolutely love the new m4, even don't have a problem naming it different, remember the audi a4 convertible? it became later a5 convertible, even the a5 coupe appeared.
about the car...
the interior looks stunning, luxurious yet sporty, and the exterior, oh my, brutal. regarding the exhaust, as you say it is not loud enough, well the sound isolation in cabin is pretty god, outside it sounds great, plus if you want a hardcore exhaust you can always go aftermarket of just wait a couple of months until BMW M Performance studio unveils its official performance exhaust (in collaboration with Akrapović). keep it up guys! viva la bmw m4! i want one so hard.
The BMW M4 is 0-60 in 3.9sec(with DCT) and 4.1sec(with manuel) it's on there website
I really liked your clip.
great review. well presented.
The rear wheel arches on the m3 are stunning.. I prefer the 4 door
It is wider but the M4 is allrounda better looking car
Get Mazda 3
+ XCARFilms
my brother bought a BMW e90 m3 and wow it's incredible. it's almost time for my first car in a year. I'm fortunate enough to have a 35k budget for my first car. I've been debating a toyota supra 1998 or a m4 for as cheap as it can go. I have two questions
1) will the M4 ever get around 35k?
2) is the supra a good first car?
Thanks so much! I love your content, it always excites me!
Amazing in all categories...insurance and maintenance costs are the main issues with the car in Europe and overseas!
the panel gap between the headlight and the bonnet is huga
Slab a super LOUD aftermarket exhaust system for the M4 would that solve the sound problem? But it still seems like the downsizing the engine and strap 2 turbos is still a failure to quite a few M3 lovers in the past. For me, no thx, I'll rather buy a well-maintained used M3 E92 even if that I have the money to buy 2 new M4s
it never died with the e92. it was the best handling front engine rear wheel drive car.
Great review.
Nice review!
So Beautiful!
Oh snap I thought the was a civic revving!.. 4:08
I thought something similar, it dips but sounds like the standard 4 series!
Didn't you forgot to mention 'Comfort' mode? (I may be wrong)
The S55B30 is a single twin scroll turbo actually
it is twin scroll twin turbo, all other n55 are twin scroll only
free driving feel
I wanted a lambo huracane, but I'd figured I have better chances of affording this, looks the same kinda with the color. Love this car! ///M Power.
Now that's a review!
If they already make supercars (as in the M cars) why then they feel the need to completely rearrange them beyond recognition (and crucially beyond what the rules allow without a special dispensation) to race proper sports cars in GT racing?
BMW always give the consumers the most advance technology they could make! Which is awesome!
Love it. Very nice car.
4:30 Wait what..... You.... Have to have traction control (or at least ESC) by law in many countries... Why.. What... A major manufacturer would never take away traction control...
I would buy a second hand low mileage Maserati Granturismo Sport instead.
It´s not a bad option or alternative, the Maserati is more special all together, but if I would need it as a daily driver and only have one car I would take a new M4 over and used Maserati.
Have you ever sat inside one ... it is a car from the 1990s.
MrLalasd It is LOL, but the sound makes it all worth it!
Actually its not a bad alternative, But I think if ur gonna use a maserati as a daily driver, then the cost of maintaining that beast is gonna be much much higher than any M Car
***** So true, will also question the reliability. But if you are looking for a car priced around 100k, than this wouldn't be a major issue.
Did he say 32mpg? Individual Avus Blue and carbon back seats for me.
Awesome looking car but DAMN BMW why doesn't this press car have full LED ?? The blue M3 has them, and they make it much better looking.
I appreciate that the M4 and M3 are faster but surely as an all round car the new Cayman GTS is a better bet for the money? It sounds and feels a lot more fun to drive than this IMO
Do none of you people notice that the fake engine noise can be disabled with a few simple wire snips?
that gold colour is the boss
What the song?
That new engine just isn't doing it for me. My last M car was an E46 M3 and I still think that 3.2 naturally aspirated 6 at 8000rpm is still the benchmark...
Nice
Perfect now I can drive my M4 to the shooting range to try out my new M4… 😆
4:03 32 mpg.. not a chance, unless it's being towed by a Prius.
Amazing...
Should get a Carbon fiber hood on that 2-Door M4.
I personally think the e92 looks better and sounds much better but. This is an overall better car.
this car is beautiful my god
