Christopher Tin made Baba Yetu because the lead designer of Civilization IV (Soren Johnson) was his college roommate back in the day and asked him if he could make a song for the game. What a lucky twist of fate that turned out to be for all!

I am offended this doesn't have more views. Christopher Tin is a legend.

Sogno di Volare restores my faith in humanity every time I listen to it. Do you have any idea how difficult that is in this day and age? What an absolutely phenomenal composer, and awesome guy

Awesome to see Christopher Tin on the channel! Baba Yetu is the song of my childhood, Civ 4 was the first real game I ever played and I still love it today. And of course Sogno di Volare is one of the best pieces ever created.

This interview absolutely flew by, I could listen to you two talk for hours. Massive respect for Mr. Tin and his works & thank you for doing this interview!
(And thank you for choosing my question! With such a plethora of others received and such limited time, it's an honour to have my curiosity satisfied)

    * Tin's comment about learning about classical music through Bugs Bunny (The Ring of the Nibelung, Figaro, The Barber of Seville) is probably the most relatable thing I've heard. That was my first ever exposure to classical music as a child in post-soviet Kazakhstan.
Did not expect to see this today! I love these interviews, hope you continue with these even if they're not as view friendly. Seeing the channel grow is awesome.
The dream, one day you'll have a talk with Olivier Deriviere, which would be a great conversation.

Some of his music like Baba Yetu definitely transcends the medium and gives its own experience. Christopher Tin is one of the best modern composers I've heard but feels like he goes underappreciated among those who play video games

I was JUST thinking how I'd love to see Marco's thoughts/breakdown of Baba Yetu and/or Sogno di Volare a couple days ago. A very interesting interview Marco! And thank you Christopher Tin for your thoughts, and your music!

Oh my gosh I was so happy to hear him cite prog as something he enjoys. My dad made me a prog nerd as a teen and I've never stopped loving it.

This was way too fun and way too short, it isn't fair, ahhh! As an illustrator who works with private commissions atm, I really relate to Christopher Tin's feelings regarding "what makes me like a piece or not", the headspace we're in and feelings going through us at the moment of creating a commissioned piece really dictates a lot how I see it afterwards, too. And it's kinda hard to explain that feeling to other people (specially ppl who don't work with or have a hobby with art).
I'd also want to add about the 'finding other meanings' in the music, I personally like to find a common ground between assigning my own interpretations, and looking up the lyrics, or what the composer has to say about it, bc I think context is very important, too! Even more in certain contexts (protest music, for ex). This was phenomenal! ❤️

That was fun interview. It was interesting to hear what drives Maestro Tin and what is his workflow.
I also didn't knew that Sogno di Volare was kinda rushed piece, considering his workflow for games. And yet, he did a magnificent piece.
And now that I know that you've heard of Sogno di Volare, I'm even more interested to hear your opinions on other music from Civ 6. Geoff Knorr and other people involved did an amazing job on adapting folklore music into four styles for each culture represented in the game. Especially the oldest music pieces that were managed to save to this day for Ancient cultures (aka Epitaph of Seikilos for Greeks and Hyrrian Hymn for Phoenicia)

Christopher Tin is a treasure dude, really great interview with him. It's great insight into being a composer and what goes into that, and also he's just got a charismatic energy to him lol.

I used to be somewhat irritated by overuse of the word "React" in vid's names. Like there are channels wo do analysis, some do on the spot covers etc, still calls their vids "react". But yeah, interviewing multiple grammy composer? not even shown on my hove page, having less than 4k views... and the interview in question is fun and interesting! It seems like react meta is still real and essential for algorithm(
