As a Marylander, we grew up on crabs, seasoned with Old Bay and salt. Vinegar in the steaming water, and seasoned in layers. We bought our's by the dozens of bushel depending on the number of people. They were always rinsed with cold water. Bushels were dumped on the concrete and sprayed with the hose. Dead ones were thrown out. It's bound to happen that a few are lost. I can remember one grabbing my little toe wearing flip flops. Talk about hurt!😂 But man, my family loved them! My uncle took up the tradition after Grandma died. But because his wife wouldn't eat them, he would buy them pre-cooked. We'd eat out on the picnic tables in his backyard. I truly miss those days. Most of the families are scattered and the elders passed. If I get crabs now, I eat them alone . Hubby won't clean his own, and I refuse to do them for him. 😢 I still do them the old way the way my family did and I know well!!❤❤
I love it...as my Father always said, "if you don't pick'em, you don't eat'em". We were just down Costas Inn in Dundalk and the crabs were AWESOME! Captain Trey's by home in Hunt Valley are real good too! Enjoy, how bout those O'S!?
Va. Is for lovers but the best lover in the world is The Jimmy Crab .7 days locked in bliss with the female called a doubler. He protects her and loves her until she is let go to seed the bay.❤waterman. From Deal. Island here.
His list is spot on! I'm not a fan of restaurants that serve steamed crabs. When I do visit, I ask them to bring my crabs in a brown paper bag. That way, I can ensure that the crabs remain hot! When they are served on a tray, chances are some will get cool. But you can not go wrong with any of his choices! All great places!
Thanks for the tips! I grew up in Dundalk eating crabs from Neptunes (long gone)...but I have since found some great places on the eastern shore. Rock Hall, St. Michael's or Harris Crab House in Kent Narrows would make a nice day trip. For a little crab excursion on the west side of the bay, try the River Shack in Charlestown.
L.P. Steamers (South Baltimore in Locust Point - cool area) or A Captain James in Fells Point (Baltimore) - even closer to Amtrack near BWI is G&M Crabcakes
Stay at the Pendry in Fells or the Four Seasons in Harbor East…both areas have 70% less crime than other areas in Bmore and you won’t have any problems Mr Funny Man
Too bad 82 percent of them are from the gulf, with Louisiana dominating that. I’m guessing that if you don’t crab yourself, odds are you haven’t even had a Maryland crab.
Hardly…I know what I like and they’re gross. Chocolate, Vanilla & Strawberry in the good Ole USA and I like Mint Chocolate Chip! Have you been to Cantlers in Annapolis…wifey loves the soft shell crabs

I usually take my wife to Cantler's for crabs on our anniversary. Absolutely worth the trip, even though we are closer to Mike's on the South River
Cantler's is cool....I do like Mikes though too

Sad for you. Hopefully you can get you kids to pick up the tradition.
I hope you all realize most of the crab you're getting from these resturants come from Texas and La because we have so many the price is cheaper.

Blue Crabs are up and down the east coast and the gulf states.

Skipjacks, Mr Bills Terrace Inn
Only a few of the places serve 100% maryland crabs .a lot come in from Carolina and Louisiana.
There is no way Cantler's uses Old Bay on their crabs. Very few crab houses do. They all use J.O.! Their website even says so. . .
They all use Jo's crab spice, not old bay .
You lost me when you said soft shells are gross 😮 that's like saying you don't eat the mustard
