HOW TO CATCH SQUID! Catching Squid in Alaska

- Would you catch it? Squid, a surprisingly pretty and unique creature. Rockfish and crabs love it as well as big halibut. It's pretty tasty too. This was our first time ever catching squid. We plan to fish this spot more in the future. We have heard squid could stay in the same spot most of the summer. It will be interesting to see if this is the case. Once you find the squid they are fun and fairly easy to catch. Getting the right gear, dropping the right depth, and keeping tension while bringing them in is key. It takes a little bit of getting used to at first and will give your arms a burn like no other.

woooo see you guys soon! interesting video. maybe we can do that too :)
Hey, why not attach a 6-10 inch extension to the reel handle so you get more leverage and less strain on your wrists?
Fisherman's Life your coming up to Alaska?!?! SWEET lol. Two of the best youtubers doing a video, sweet!! When are you coming up?
Fisherman's Life it’s so deep that might help. Tj said attach a drill to the reel. Haha maybe we can figure something out. The rod holders help too.
I’ve watched this video so many times! Sure do miss your videos! Learned plenty from them! Thanks again for sharing!
When I was fishing for Squid in deep water I switched to braids and got more Din Din! !!Garlic and Butter!! Woot Woot.
Great video!! I like how you are in discovery mode and finding out as you delve into the process. Was there a cook video?
Awesome video, makes me want to go squid fishing some day!
That's awesome stuff! I wanna squid fish!
Cool video great editing good filming nice squid I liked the video for ya
Just Hunting Thanks man 👍🏼👊🏼
REEL Addiction Tj & Jan no problem
The ink is in a sack toward the back..easy to see when you gut it
Cool video! Do a catch and cook please!
The squid are delicious and also very excellent crabbing and halibut bait.
It’s so good to stuff the squid heads with a rice pilaf, then braised or steamed 👌🏼
Great bait indeed but all I could think of are all the delicious recipes I know for squid 🤤
Glad to see you both getting into all kinds of fishing up there!
Alaskan squid look super different to Australia ones
Good video !..never done it before around POW...any thing I should look for to find a squid spot here ??
brett mehrer we tend to have our best luck in May off of deep rocky points in 4-6 hundred feet of water. We hope you can get on some. I think there are some good night squidding videos on the Tube from here in Ketchikan. We haven’t tried that yet. Had no problem getting them in the day tho.
@@tjjanalaska8674 ..thanks for answering..appreciate that very much .!!.you got me hooked on trying to fish them..with the idea of sentkng alive one down for halibut..got to try that..and really a great job on the video..please make more..
Yeah buddy... should work good.
@@tjjanalaska8674 This year only us sharv permit holders can keep Non- pelagic rockfish on our 30 hook skate lines as bi catch..part of not living in a taxing ( organized. ) borough...like Ketchikan.
Prince of Wales Rocks !..no property taxes or borough government...
We haven’t made it over to POW. That is good to know.
Those are Humbolt squid. The preparation and cooking is different than the smaller market squid we have here in Cali. They are a little thicker, and a bit tougher as well. Great video!
don't look like humbolt squid to me, unless they are juveniles....
Yes, they are juveniles. They get up to about six feet in length.
Didn't know they had made it that far north yet. Used to catch them in the Gulf of California.
They're not Humbolts. They're Magister Armhook squid, Berryteuthis magister. I've fished that same spot many times...electric reels and braid FTW. Edit: just saw the text on the vid...they're right on the ID. Humbolts' arms don't have hooks. These things will draw blood...
These are Armhook squid, not Humboldt.
New to the whole halibut fishing experience how do you attach the live squid like that to the hook
Are you right outside of Petersburg ?
Is there anyway you could send me a drop pin where to fish for them?
Thank you
Braid and high-speed reels, even spinning
Where did you catch those at? I am a beginners and want to gather some info
South east?
You guys see many people from port townsend Washington around there in June?
Do you only fish 200-300 feet so you don’t have to reel as much, or do the only live in that range? I’ve caught them at 300’, but that was at the bottom. I didn’t know they would be suspended in mid channel.
We have had good luck catching them between those depths. The bottom here is between 500-1000ft. We prefer not to drop it to that depth if we don’t have to 😉. We catch them here In May and early June. Throughout the later summer months we have not had success catching them. It seems they have moved out or maybe 🤔 like you say moved deeper.
Where were you fishing out of if you don't mind. I would like to try it sometime.
Hmm I hear y'all got massive Humboldts least in the south east ish area
Very cool!
Maybe look for weed beds , and use bass rods , might be better then 300 + foot line .. maybe 15-20 feet
How you gonna catch something and not know how to eat it? (Juneau, Alaska)
What species?
What species are these?
Magister Armhook squid
Never caught them except close to the top of the water or next to the bottom...interesting
What depth of water have you successfully found them in? Or do you feel it is location more than anything else?
Barbecue Squid/Fried Squid
(Or Kilawen) 👍👍👍👍
I would like to try Barbecue Octopus have you ever tried it? Is it similar to squid?
Oh and we fried our squid. Should have got it on video but we missed out on that one.
Barbecue octopus taste is better than squid but little bit chewi.
But try to barbecue whole squid and put some chopped onions tomatoes ginger spring onions
Salt pepper inside and grilled.
Thanks David I will try this.
Make a auto reeling reel device
CALAMARI! Cut into rings, egg wash and bread crumbs. Fried and served with HOT tomato sauce and hard biscuit. No NYE is complete w/o them!
I see you discarding innards when cleaning the squid…… if you go crabbing and you discard innards instead of freezing it into blocks for crab bait than you are wasting it….
What's your email? Wanna know if cool if we can rap about fishing in the AK
Calamari
Starts cutting them apart, yeah not fucking eating these things 😂
Man... Time for you guys to invest in a solid microphone. People will accept lower quality videos but they will not accept lower quality audio. Your channel will take off once you buy a solid mic.
Lol,half the people watching YT videos have the sound off and are listening to music….
