Are you hoping to qualify for the world championships? Let us know 🙌
In the bucket list! Somewhere in the upcoming years 🤞🏽
Hoping to qualify: of course! Actually thinking about participating? No. Far to expensive. Even if Ironman Hawaii is a myth in itself, since the new owner of Ironman the commercial aspect go more and more noticeable. Of course, its all about money. But from my perspective they take it too far. (But I absolutely unterstand all athletes wanting to start there)
Ever since I watched Julie Moss crawl to the finish line, I've wanted to do IM Hawaii. Maybe when I'm in my 70s, I'll achieve it 😀
The norseman is on my bucket list
As an international TO, a national referee and seasoned Ironman referee, how do I qualify to be a referee at Ironman Kona?
I learned alot day:
1) I can't afford to go to Kona
2) I don't have to worry because I will never be fast enough to qualify
Made Kona via Arizona in 2011. Raced Kona in 2012. Cost around $10k in American dollars to travel my family and do the race. The only thing most people don't think about with the 20 hour training weeks is the huge amount of luck you need of race day (qualifying race) just to get into a Q spot. So many factors and so many items need to go correctly. That being said running down Alii Dr is amazing and a great memory. Kudos to anyone who makes it and gets the experience it truly is special.
I had done plenty of triathlons - but never an Ironman - before trying to go for a Kona slot.
I was between jobs, so had time and went all in on my first Ironman:
- I bought a Brett Sutton coaching program
- I stuck to it rain or shine (go ready, then the 16 intense weeks)
- I picked an event that suited my strengths (heat resistance)
- I spent a while in Asia acclimatizing (humidity)
- I trained the disciplines that were my weaknesses (not to save time in the swim, but so that the swim took nothing out of me!)
Going all in is NB. Don't go half in - because you will race as a legacy athlete then after 12! I would not recommend trying to qualify while having other priorities (except maybe studying). Qualifying is a full-time project - the 20 hours a week training and 2 hours a day extra resting! Following a Sutton program gave me the confidence to race at a sustainable pace and to finish the run at a decent pace with no drop off and with a smile!
I'm sorry but there should only be one way to qualify for Kona and that is to earn a slot outright by athletic achievement, not how much money you have. But I guess that doesn't fit with the business plan. It's the world championships, end of.
Charity slots, and I'm expecting to get slated here. Those wanting to raise funds should do so at regular IM events. It may not have the publicity of Kona, but all the extra money spent on travel etc getting there could otherwise be donated to charity as well.
If you want the Kudos of racing at Kona, earn it.
Kona is not for the strongest athletes but for the richest. period.
Imagine buying your way to the Olympics or Tour de France or FIFA World Cup
Exactly!!!
The question now is not how you qualify! The real question is can you afford it?! You’ll need $20k if you want to race. It’s crazy
Holy shit?!
Can you detail those 20k?
Haha, If you qualify you earn the right to sign up for 1400$ of course excluding the10% active fee. I hope i will not qualify 😉
@@fredtube25 i think 1500 for signing up. + 1000 in flights + 2000 for 4-5 days hotel. We are in the 4500. Adds the training, food, tech, easily gets to 10k.. if you want new wheels, etc it could get to 20k
@@rafaeldaher7392 Plus of course the costs for the Ironman event wherever it is you go to qualify beforehand.
Sounds like the cost is now a major factor. Be interesting to see how far the roll downs go compared to previous years!
I thought of a way they can fix Kona problems. Anchor a couple cruise ships there, you maximize the hotel infrastructure that’s not there, along with feeding the guests, and they can take the ship out from California if they want and free up transportation. The property rentals would be the only ones who don’t like it.
I think doing a late race in the season with a good amount of slots is the best shot. In Hamburg they were rolling down so far and no one wanted to take it.
And that’s the problem.
No offense, but if you’re place 10th or worse in your age group, you might dont deserve a slot for WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.
For roll down slots. look no further than the last IM qualifying race of the season in Copenhagen. Slots weren't being taken due to cost and being to close to Kona itself (about 7/8 weeks). Slots were rolling down in excess of 150th place with some age groups not filling at all.
Same for im sweden
Same in IM Switzerland already in early July
Good advice from GTN Hq for us amateur athletes: carefully & tactfully choose your preferred race ( train right ) & have your best qualifying race day! An automatic or roll down slot awaits for us wannabe Kona newbies 👍🙏
Oh, Heather. Lovely as always
Hawaii resident here, thanks for answering my question on Kona
Heather your hair looks magnificent ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️🤗🤗
Does being different nationality helps? Not winning you age group but being one of few racers from a specific country?
I feel neutral on it, but the race has reached its tipping point. They can’t call it a world championship if you can buy your way in. It’s basically a golf Pro/am, except those are for charity. I went to age group worlds in Lausanne, it was a good experience. I thought it cost a lot ($4000 plus coming from USA). I got a roll down slot in that case too. I finished 16th in my aged up group when 8 slots were up for grabs. Surprisingly Lausanne was closer to me as the crow flies than Hawaii, which is in my own country! But we didn’t tote the line in the itu grand final race, and there wasn’t a fun run category.
Thank you for this! I have been accepted to the Women for Triathlon fundraiser and was curious about the different ways others would qualify. Basically if there were other "normal" non-world champ athletes that'll be out there with me. 🙂
I might wait until I am 60 in a couple of years
Hopefully the £ will have risen against the $ by then
Heather they should have brought you to Kona too !!!
Note the change on the legacy slot ... they added the fact that you need to have been in business for 12 years with Ironman ... so no point doing more than 1 a year anymore ...
As much as it is a dream to race there, it isn’t a reality for me. I need to improve my PR by around 2.5hrs and the cost of very prohibitive. I’ve been a spectator at Kona once and that was amazing, so I’m be satisfied with that.
The cost has always been a factor. Just exorbitant!
I'm moving to 55-59 AG next year so with enough roll-down I might have a chance 😜😂
I'm in the 60-65, the winners are still considerably faster them me :)
Under 30s and over 50s where to find the in-between?
It’s one thing to qualify but anyone who has travelled to Hawaii will still have to contend with the heat, humidity and wind when you are there. I do t believe we should minimise the actual feat of getting to the finish line.
The heat isn’t a secret. Finishing Kona as an age grouper is not minimized in the slightest.
It would be a dream to compete in kona but im not sure if i’ll even ever have the financial capabilities to participate its so extremely expensive
I’ve got a lot of work to do. But maybe one day 🤞
Hopefully you find some time 🙌
Slots is poits?
See all of you at Kona next year :) cheering for all of us
🙌
I cannot help but feel like Ironman is all about the money. Adding 1200 female spots I doubt is about allowing 1200 more people to experience the island and is more about the extra $120,000 they get from that.
But I thought it was about inclusivity... I know a woman who just "qualified" and keeps bragging about how hard that is and that it's harder than qualifying for Boston. However, she qualified as a woman in Chattanooga. She finished 12/40 in just under 13 hours. As a guy I would have had to finish 2/100 at least and almost 4 hours faster in the same age group (not comparing old fogies to young people). It is definitely cheapening the experience. 13 hours is not qualification criteria for anything.
Also, in your math, you only included entry fees you forgot to include a whole extra day's worth of advertising.
i think the math suggests they will bring in $1.200,000!
Next: The shortest route to become a Pro Triathlete
Also becoming a celebrity is a ticket to Kona.
You can also run the Boston Marathon by donating/raising money for charity. So Ironman isn't the only organization providing multiple ways to enter key events.
When AG's are rolling down to 99th there's no need for too much planning, just rock up, race, and make sure you got £1200 at the ready.
I am more worried about where to get money from to go than actually getting a slot !
I've never participated in an Ironman or Triathlon. But I'll start at Frankfurt Marathon in two weeks and aiming for sub3 hours.
Kona 2025 possible?
Absolutely possible 🙌
Go for it
The comments about the price are getting ridiculous, I have a slot for 2023. So far the planned costs are about 20k but with three weeks of holiday added to race week with a family of 5. Yes its a lot of money (and probably to much) but so would be a holiday to Hawaii and defnitly not the 60k i've seen mentioned. As for the additional slots for female triathletes, if this creates an influx of woman racing long it would be awesome, the womans race was loads of fun to watch.
Ironman Wales rolled down to the 100th position for 50-54 this year. Hope for me yet 😂
How many people were in that AG??
@@TheDomLouis 235. I suppose most people think because they finished outside th top 10, there's no chance of qualifying. So they dont go to awards.
Yeah this was mad to watch. They ended up just asking anyone who wanted a slot to stand up.
@@danfurze haha. I decided to have money back and not compete. I definitely would've gone. Waiting till im 55 to do it again. Hopefully roll down a hundred or so next time. Did you qualify Dan?
Its all one big cash game. I'll stick to short course.
It is unethical for people from Western countries/the Global North with more capitol/stronger currencies to go to countries that have less of this to try and qualify. Triathlon is already so homogeneous as it is. I would love to see less barrier to entry for folks
Heather is so lovely. 😌😉
The real question is can you afford it?! £8,000 For 7 day this year Mad Just MAD Got a slots. in Copenhagen. can't taken it due to cost
With the new two day format anyone with 10.000 dollars in their pocket can qualify. With 3000 available slots for upcoming Kona 2023 you only need to finish an Ironman race to be able to get a rolldown slot. The excitement and exclusiveness is gone.
Don’t be such a clown.
@@dbo4506 meaning?
@@dbo4506 He is right. I know a woman who just "qualified" and keeps bragging about how hard that is and that it's harder than qualifying for Boston. However she qualified as a woman in Chattanooga. @@dbo4506 He's not wrong you know.
The only bad thing in my opinion they took way the chance for the poor people, THE LOTTERY!!!!
……why would you want to? Even the pros weren’t going to bother this year……….You’ve got to wonder if its the greedy locals or Ironman who are making it outwith the reach of all but the top 5% of earners.
So don’t give them your money, don’t watch. Ignore the show and give your energy to something that values you. There are a thousand other races.
If you are a woman you can go to a "women for tri" event like Ironman Chattanooga. I hear they are just giving spots away.
Ok now... you have to start iron those t-shirts. Get an iron, have it somewhere near you and thats it.
Xmas is coming 🤔
@@gtn 😂perfect gift!
Dude, that's expensive. The best option might be the 12 ironmans. If you have a local(ish) one and start running it every year in your early 40s you can get in in your 50s.
As a triathlete it should be on the bucket list, but to me it's just not that appealing. The course is boring. It's hot and expensive. There's so many other IM's I'd rather do.
Kind of sad. Kona is now a Slot Machine! The thrill is fading! Triathletes now bemoan: Money is the ROUTE of all Evil
How to qualify for Kona? ... That's the neat part, you don't!
But seriously, wow burning $65k just for a single race. Not thanks. Plus, let's face it - buying your way in vs. qualifying is totally different.
Sounds more like an event to boycott rather wanting to be qualified 🤭
easy, earn 250k a year and complete an ironman. Kona is a joke
Kona is overrated to race at.
Before making a video learn the pronunciation it's not kalua pier it's kai- lua pier!!!
Been seeing lots of Kona IM related posts on “GoFundMe.”
