A strat body guitar, strat set pickups, and a guy who really know how to play and sound like a proper strat. If Leo Fender is still alive, he will probably mention Nick Johnston as one of his fav strat player.
One awesome guitar player !!!!! Man I love stuff like that with tons of feeling in it .we need more guitar players to bring back the emotional aspect of the guitar. We have some amazing musicians (guitarists) nowadays that can not express themselves like this but they are very technical
Plini is another great guitarist I recommend, that has both technical skill and can express himself wonderfully too. His album “Handmade Cities” is my personal favorite
God damn, Nick's attention to detail on each one of those notes is perfect! It's like he knows how to take care of each note as it's being voiced to make it really shine, and at the same time be ready to introduce the next note or phrase he's about to drop. Never ceases to blow my mind.
Man, the amount of times he changes pickup is immense! He'll change for one note, and switch straight back, or only for the bent part of the note. Watch through the entire song just looking at the pickup selector.
Yep...want a smooth tone for a phrase?...neck..want to dig in even for just a bend?bridge...and all in between...to all that also count the volume knob...you set up your sound so that you get mid volume(at 5 or 6) the tone you want...and when you open it up completely( to ten) your boost tone....you know things like that that actually matter if you play a strat type guitar with strat type pickups.....
Nick's feelings and expressivity are superbly well conveyed in this demo, and I'm not even talking about that sweet ass tone! Some parts of the song reminded me of SRV's interpretation of Little Wing. Incredible. Thanks, Keith & Nick!
first time i hear nick i said WOW! My favorite guitarist from last 15 years, fantastic vintage singole coil tone, few gain and perfect control, awesome songwriting, tecnique and tons of feeling! Usually i don't comment video sponsored by product, because usually it's seem to be only demo with no musical value, but this time i' m impressed! Great nick i will follow you
Yeschir I cant boogie with that, whens he gonna sing... like Minny from Trinidad,,,,,,im so sorry Nick for by Seymour Duncans Psyhcedelic Strat Pups...
Man! You are an excellent musician! You speak to the soul with your guitar. I listened to this and went straight to iTunes and purchased two of your albums (Atomic Mind & Remarkably Human). Enjoying listening to them tonight. Very nice work. Thank you!
Man, your guitar playing is good enough for the both of us. I think you're using theory and anti theory to create chaos in the midst of your fantastic riffs. I wish someone would just label some of your music videos with the scales you're playing like subtitles, then I'd be able to learn much faster.
I bought these antiquity Texas hot pickups and installed them yesterday. Made a big difference. They are full and the bridge pickup is powerful. You can even turn down the volume and tone a lil and dial in that sweet classic tone.
I've listened to his albums and he's great, but this right here was more intimate and he showed me more of what he's into. He's a fluid smooth rippin killer player.
Phenomenal playing brother!!! What an inspiration! I think I might have to slap these pups in my American Ultra. The stock “noiseless” pickups are just missing that wild strat x-factor.
He definitely can play. I love some of the tones he is getting out of that Strat with those single coils. Would not be surprised if Joe Sat invites him to G3 soon.
This dude is a great guitar player but he is not on the level of say Guthrie Govan, Frank Gambale, or Brett Garsed; and I'm sure he would admit this himself. Still great though, just not quite that level. Some of his playing is a bit choreographed.
For years Seymour Duncan was custom-making this pickup for special artist friends. Very nice, Great looking and sounding guitar !! Great Guitar.. Great Player !! Very much-loved,Thanks
i m sorry mate no matter who play squier bullet its not gonna sound like that , not even nj signature strat gonna sound like that because its cheap too xd:))
Nick is one of my favorites! His last three albums are masterpieces, and in the latest one he sings! His USA Schecter has a solid Wenge neck and custom would pickups - plays and sounds great for $3k. His import Diamond series is about $750 and plays and sounds better than any other guitar in that range except maybe the PRS Silver Sky SE John Mayer.
These SD pickups are just amazing and Nick, my man, shows what these pickups can do, in right hands. Full bottom, sustained middle and crunchy, little twangy high...I mean what the fuck more do you need?
So glad I saw this video! Nik Johnston is an incredibly talented Stratocaster slinger! These antiquity hot pick ups have intrigued me before and I'm going to give them a trial run.

Came for the pickups, stayed for the amazing playing.
The song is called Last Deals of Dead Men off Nick's Atomic Mind album. Great Album !.
Turned out great, buddy!
Nick Johnston You kind of...sort of...in the right angle...Look kind of like...marty freidman. Which is rad.
Nick Johnston amazing playing!
+Nick Johnston Great Playing, Great Songs and these pickups sounds Fantastic! :-)
Agree.
Great?? THIS IS INSANE!
I love how he changes the pickup position for a single phrase to make it sound like open mouth
yeah. got to try this myself
Kinda difficult if you're not playing a Strat because of the pickup switch location. Still doable though...
4:54 those bends will cut right into your soul man.
Why have I only heard of him now? He's such a phenomenal player, very melodic and musical. Gonna grab his album

That pickup switching is art. Such an underused tool and technique that creates so much expression. Cheers.
Volume knob as well.

Chance Boney yes, especially when he did staccato with slight off beat notes. That was heaven.
Wow, this guy is simply amazing, criminally underrated.

That is some next level stuff. I’ve only seen Joe B and Warren Haynes do it live and Jeff Beck do it on video
That is fucking phenomenal.
I've watched this about 8 times already. It never gets old. Damn Good.
I love how he reaches out for the tremolo bar on long, sustained notes
Nick's feelings and expressivity are superbly well conveyed in this demo, and I'm not even talking about that sweet ass tone! Some parts of the song reminded me of SRV's interpretation of Little Wing. Incredible. Thanks, Keith & Nick!

What a guitar player!. Nick plays with such a massive amount of feel. Those things sound awesome
400 comments not one comment on the pickups lol..amazing playing Nick if no one mentioned it lol
Man, this guy has a fantastic sense of melody and phrasing.
He's got the best pick hand I've ever seen. God-tier status.
Schtratocaster
Indeed
Yeschir I cant boogie with that, whens he gonna sing... like Minny from Trinidad,,,,,,im so sorry Nick for by Seymour Duncans Psyhcedelic Strat Pups...
Kimmo Lingonheimo nothing about that response was coherent
This is how a pedal demo should be. Best tube screamingish sound I’ve ever heard.
One of my favourite player, so much tasty licks and great tone. Speaks to me.
The Dynamics are wow, really wow!
Kick ass guitar tone, with a splash of such beautiful guitar song.
Simply amazing note by note fill ins.
Nick is an AMAZING guitar player really inspiring!

May I ask whats the title of the song he just played in this video?

This made me buy these pickups. He definitely makes them sound alot better than I can..haha..maybe one day I'll do them justice 🤞

0:41 amazing sound!!!
That Kemper sounds AWESOME!
literally brought tears to my eyes, just soul and pure guitar love.
that body grab on the clean neck portion to slide the chord up. that slayed me
cody thompson what time?
Xain Sanchez 8:03 to 8:06
cody thompson He pushed on the trem.
***** 1 yeah but he used it to slide that chord down the neck. his trem is too flat to use without a bar
perfect strat didn't exi....
oh Jesus.... that strat is really perfect
I've listened to his albums and he's great, but this right here was more intimate and he showed me more of what he's into. He's a fluid smooth rippin killer player.
this tone makes me so happy. Gonna put these on my next strat
Phenomenal playing brother!!! What an inspiration! I think I might have to slap these pups in my American Ultra. The stock “noiseless” pickups are just missing that wild strat x-factor.
As musical as Guthrie?...I say yes...dynamic,expressive, tasteful...command performance
He definitely can play. I love some of the tones he is getting out of that Strat with those single coils. Would not be surprised if Joe Sat invites him to G3 soon.
better than I think
No.
I thought the same thing earlier today. Will see G3 next week. So excited!

He's technique is mind soothing. So beautiful.
This guy is absolutely incredible. One of my favorite players for sure. Sweet tone too of course ;)
his playing is so magnificent
Haven't revisited this in a while but glad i came back - it's so damn good!
When you think the stuff that you write is awesome and then you here what a true professional sounds like...
TheSamuraiApocalypse that’s how I feel every time I listen to Richie Kotzen
:))))
I have never seen a guitar player put such great use to the 5-way switch like this before... ever.
Me too
Flawlessly changing to bridge pickup for a second of clean sustain...
Amazing tone paired with exceptional composition and playing.
I want to see/hear this refilmed with a Squier Bullet. I'm guessing it would sound exactly the same.
I'd pay money to watch him play a bullet strat....
@@adamstevenson8737 Wait for a while.I ordered this pickup set for my affinity squier))
@@user-gr5kt1df1w I have an affinity telecaster. Super solid guitar for the money.....
i m sorry mate no matter who play squier bullet its not gonna sound like that , not even nj signature strat gonna sound like that because its cheap too xd:))
@@thelastcat8406 Thats not true actually, he made a video comparing the standard model to the usa custom shop --> Not that much difference actually.

LOVED EVERY NOTE. AWSOME NICK.
The tone is outstanding!

THAT TONE IS FREAKIN AMAZING
So smooth,
Nick and Seymour Duncan's workers.
My very first impression for modern strat player.
Love every note you play
Killer riffing and melodic phrasing
Beautifull tone, wouldn´t call that a typical Strat tone but a different flavour
So glad I saw this video! Nik Johnston is an incredibly talented Stratocaster slinger! These antiquity hot pick ups have intrigued me before and I'm going to give them a trial run.
That room is so sick looking. Cool guitar playing too. It's cool to see Keith has a video of Nick on his channel.
Ah, love this song. Definitely my favorite on the album.
Keith, I am extremely jealous of that studio setup!
I like these pickups more than the ones nick is currently using. Its so buttery smooooooth
Have no idea who this guy is but damn that´s some tasteful playing!
Nick my friend you are a man amongst mere guitar boys!!!
What kind of chair is that red one in back? I'm sitting on a $20 target chair and i need help.
Can't wait to get these pickups!
this version is better than the one from the album
Wow, such an amazing guitar player! Thanks for introduction, Keith.
Wow, what a diverse and impressive musician. The pickups sound amazing too, again very diverse.
Very natural playing. Beautiful, great tone and composition.
damn i love this guy, what an absolute monster of a player, what a joy it was to listen!
This gave me chills!
Very good playing..He has passion and that’s better than any scale shredder..
Beautiful playing and tone!
I enjoy NJ's playing. Sweet Sounds from This Schecter. Seymour Duncan Pickups are excellent
This video is a masterpiece. How do i own it? This is the first digital media to make me understand why someone would want to own something like this.
man.... you are a phenomenal player. I was watching everything you did... seriously, phenomenal player.
dude, fantastic playing !
I absolutely love this and often just play it to listen over and over . Great job man and great tone as well as dynamics .
What is the song name? pls
Wow wow wow… what a player and what a set of pups
Just sold me a set of these pickups. Hope they come with your chops. Holy crap, dude, that was sick.
oh, man....got to get those for my strat! Thanks Nick and Keith.
I wish I could learn from u like face to face teacher & student . Nick 🙏
Awesome solo. Awesome schecter, And pickups sound amaze. cheers
Full of your identity, style, soul....i like it. You are great!
So satisfying to listen.... Nick you're great..
what a great player *-*
Wow! This is my new favorite guitar player.
These sound just like the Duncan Design sc101 alnico stratocaster pickups that came in my made in India vm stratocaster ! Awesome !
one of my favorite songs by Nick ! so much feel !
The best sound he's ever had.... Stellar =)
Love the sound of the neck pickup at around 8:37.
Holy shit is that some playing! Wow. Great tones too.
Dude is a legit guitar god
The playing is great and all, but I can't get that damn song out of my head! I've watched this ten times now.....
Awesome your soulful musicianship 😊🙏
I love this song and melody so much. Just gorgeous playing Nick 👏🏻😍
Pretty sweet looking studio layout going on there as well!
Is it me or this guitar has like a classic fender tone?. Sounds great either way and that guy sure can play.
