I was in the US Army, started as a Mechanic (63B) at Camp Humphreys and Casey in South Korea. Then Reclassed as PSYOP (37F / Airborne- Tactical/ SOF). My wife and kids are Filipino, and as PSYOP we had Detachment rotations to the Philippines.
US will use the Philippines as a Proxy. US will NOT be the engagement military against China.
I will say that China is indeed claiming up to the Philippines Coast line, but Philippines is NOT going to defeat China for that claim. And the US has NOT stopped China from impeding on that claim, and this was in 2012 prior to China having the worlds largest Navy. In other words consider it China's.

Thailand had learned the lesson the hard way for trusting that America would come to our aid in time of need. In the early 70s after the US Force was defeated in Vietnam, US Arm force fled Vietnam and vacate their bases in Thailand. Vietnam closed in along Thai Cambodian border with a pledge to invade Thailand and capture Bangkok. The US refuse to help either by sending military force or allowing us to access military asset still left in Thailand at the time. Thailand went to China for help, the Chinese sent 10 divisions of PLA to engage the Vietnamese force from the north which subsequently resulted in the withdrawals of force from Thai border to reinforce in the battle with the Chinese way up north. Thank to PLA, Thailand was saved. We learned who a true friend is.

@@parad8396 The ruling of the International Courts means that the PH has effectively already lost those islands. You guys are not getting it back. Case closed and no more appeal to be entertained. Funny thing is, the Chinese didn't even bother to show up to court, and they still got those islands.
The only rationale thing to do is accept the reality and move on, make peace. If you don't constantly poke the Chinese every week with fishing vessels and small little patrol boats, things won't escalate. Their Coast Guard vessels are bigger and better equipped than anything the PN has, and they're back by a shit load of bigger naval vessels, subs and aircraft in that area. The entire PAF is tiny compared to what the Chinese have in and around those islands.

Sad, but true.
It's not because we see the US as a "friend". It is because of the Mutual Defense Treaty that was signed between the US and the Philippines. If the US failed to adhere with the agreement and abandon the Philippines when called upon by the latter in times of war, then nations with the same treaty with the US such as Japan, will simply lose faith in those treaties causing the abandonment of the said treaties and eventually US will lose it's control of the region which is indispensable to US foreign policy. The issue with the South China Sea / West Philippine Sea is not just a matter of land area or natural resources. It is an issue whether the agreements and treaties that helped the world achieve momentary peace will uphold against such aggressions.
