This can be great for a few reasons. One example is when conducting a Red Team, you may find a corporate doc with editing restrictions. Use this method, change the doc to how you want it and use it for a more legitimate looking Phishing attempt!
Not if encryption is used which is recommended by Word itself. This is basically like a child lock. Helpful when you don't want your students editing the file by mistake@@andyjoseph4198
Tip for the audience: IF you can't change the extension right away, open a folder and click on "view" at the top and enable "file name extensions". Then you should be able to follow the steps in the video. Thanks for a great video!!
My sincere thanks! You really saved me man :-) when I was finalizing the last page of a guideline that I must deliver tonight, my word file suddenly locked whith no reason, and for 30 min I was searching in the web what to do, and I got nothing. Then I found your video and my problem solved in 2 minuts! now I should go and finalize my document before midnight! :-)
MrTurvey's video instructions were so much more clear and understanding than the other three videos I watched on this subject trying to figure out what those other three videos were actually trying to instruct.
I don't get it. I change the extension to a .zip from .docx but then all it does is create another zip, it doesn't open it like it does in your video. How do I open it like that??
If you're working with an older Word doc version, with extenstion ".doc", make sure you save it out as ".docx" first. Then the ".zip" filename rename will work to expose the "settings.html" file.
Very Helpful! changing the extension did not work for me, but by simply choosing "open with 7zip" to open the document, I was able to delete the settings file.
It works. It's just that your extensions are off. You can turn the extensions on from the explorer. Explained here: ruclips.net/video/6rOCUZ8opLM/видео.html
It didn’t work.. it created a diff folder when I opened the zipped file to delete the settings file so when I renamed the zip file back to word docx it didn’t do anything as the deleted settings file was now in a separate folder
it didn't work for me either. But what i did was to unzip the file and then delete the setting file. You don't wanna do that. Just open the zip files in the viewer and delete the settings file and go back, change extension. Woo! it worked!!!

This video might be helpful, but this information can be used to beach the security of someone else's document.

This works for the scenario mentioned. It however will not work if your windows require activation
