How to remove editing restrictions on Microsoft Word

This can be great for a few reasons. One example is when conducting a Red Team, you may find a corporate doc with editing restrictions. Use this method, change the doc to how you want it and use it for a more legitimate looking Phishing attempt!

Not if encryption is used which is recommended by Word itself. This is basically like a child lock. Helpful when you don't want your students editing the file by mistake​@@andyjoseph4198

Tip for the audience: IF you can't change the extension right away, open a folder and click on "view" at the top and enable "file name extensions". Then you should be able to follow the steps in the video. Thanks for a great video!!

This does not work for Word using Office 365 because the files do not contain the extension as part of the name.😔

It works. It's just that your extensions are off. You can turn the extensions on from the explorer. Explained here: ruclips.net/video/6rOCUZ8opLM/видео.html

If you're working with an older Word doc version, with extenstion ".doc", make sure you save it out as ".docx" first. Then the ".zip" filename rename will work to expose the "settings.html" file.

Very Helpful! changing the extension did not work for me, but by simply choosing "open with 7zip" to open the document, I was able to delete the settings file.

It didn’t work.. it created a diff folder when I opened the zipped file to delete the settings file so when I renamed the zip file back to word docx it didn’t do anything as the deleted settings file was now in a separate folder

it didn't work for me either. But what i did was to unzip the file and then delete the setting file. You don't wanna do that. Just open the zip files in the viewer and delete the settings file and go back, change extension. Woo! it worked!!!
