I'm disappointed in Rob Marshall. I was expecting more from him. He didn't help halle whatsoever when it came to the cgi, costumes, hair etc. He knew she was getting hate. Do extra and wow the audience so there will be more people defending the movie. I only liked halle as ariel and jonah as eric and their chemistry. He should take tips from aquaman when it came to the underwater world
@@kittycat1887 most likely something amazing on par with his oscar worthy works, even Mary Poppins Returns, at least it was visually well made in a way
Nikki Caro said she didn't make "Mulan (2020)" a musical because she didn't know how to how to include music in a movie about a girl going to war, so anyone who would've went the musical route has my vote.
They should’ve gotten Chloe Zhao, the Director of the academy award winner Nomadland, and also the Director of the internals to direct to the live action Mulan, because she is very skilled at creating a story about a Chinese warrior who starts from scratch to become a warrior
So she thought adding gravity-defying superpowers & a shape-shifting witch were suitable for her "grounded war epic"?? Also, is she familiar with Les Miz?
Initially, he was going to direct Beauty & the Beast before Disney bought the project. He ended up making The Shape of Water instead, which kinda makes me wonder what his vision of the fairy tale was like.
@@spiceupyourafterlife I know that & since he was gonna direct Beauty & The Beast first Disney should realize he is the perfect person to do their Hunchback remake
I really don't feel like Rob Marshall was a bad choice because outside of the costuming and visuals TLM really worked for me. Sure would I have liked some extra scenes? Of course, but overall the film still made my heart sing. And without him, I doubt we would have gotten Halle. His past work shows that he IS capable of giving us a more fantastical look to things too, so it's all the more a mystery how things went as south as they did for TLM. I know covid didn't help things but honestly I really get the impression there must have been some sort of internal struggle that we will never know of
I'm glad you enjoyed it - I definitely did to a certain degree (mostly because of Halle and the strength of the original property), but I have to strongly disagree about Rob. IMO, his previous works, especially his Pirates film, are a further testament to his directorial shakiness, lack of vision, and lack of soul. It definitely seems to be a skill issue because despite all the effort he claims to put in his films, the results always come across incredibly lazy. It's no surprise for me that he fumbled, but he did so more than even I expected. If anything, covid should've given them more time to polish and improve their ideas.
If the costuming budget was a concern, I certainly wouldn't have given Vanessa and Queen Selina more costume changes than Ariel (and those costumes were also more opulent and grand than anything Halle wears)... and even the EXTRAS in the engagement scene are wearing elaborate costumes that should've gone to Halle.
@@TommyRossI remember seeing the leaked designs of Ariel's sisters with the merchandise. How you can make your lead character the plainest, most boring look of the bunch is baffling.
Del Toro sounds perfect for Beauty and the Beast and, if not him, I think Neil Jordan (Interview with the Vampire, The Company of Wolves) could have been a great choice as well. Overall, I really liked the cast of B&B but it would have been nice to see more french actors involved. Also, Céline Dion's version of "How Does a Moment Last Forever" would have been even better had it been sung in french. Talking about french, I wonder what happened to Disney's film adaptation of "Once on This Island" (a stage musical based on TLM set in the French Antilles). It was announced back in 2020 and both a writer and director have also been confirmed but nothing else.
@@h193013Emmy Rossum! She would have been perfect. Apparently she was the casting director's choice but the film director and Disney producers hired Emma Watson because of her star power and the moment she was having with her activism in the 2010s.
I feel you man, Disney needs to get it's shit together. If I could hire the right directors for the live action Disney remakes, here is how I would hire... Ang Lee or Peter Jackson for The Little Mermaid (2023) Alfonso Cuarón or Justin Lin for Peter Pan & Wendy Paul King or The Wachowskis for Pinocchio (2022) Baz Luhrmann or Sam Rami for Cruella Chloé Zhao or Guy Ritchie for Mulan (2020) Martin McDonagh or Jon Favreau for Lady and the Tramp (2019) The Wachowskis or Rian Johnson for Maleficent and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Joachim Rønning & Espen Sandberg or Niki Caro for The Lion King (2019) Taika Waititi or Greta Gerwig for Aladdin (2019) Christopher Nolan or David Yates for Dumbo (2019) Kenneth Branagh or Ethan Coen & Joel Coen for Christopher Robin Guillermo del Toro or Ridley Scott for Beauty and the Beast (2017) David Fincher or Denis Villeneuve for Alice Through the Looking Glass James Cameron or Robert Zemeckis for The Jungle Book (2016) Rob Letterman or Martin Scorsese for Cinderella (2015) Chris Columbus or Joe Johnston for Maleficent J.J. Abrams or Martin Campbell for The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010) Andy Muschietti or James Gun for Alice in Wonderland (2010) What do you think of my choices for each director on the live action Disney remakes?
I’d say James Wan would be a good choice for the Little Mermaid remake since he worked on Aquaman. He would make Atlantica very beautiful compared to what we got.
I actually like that Disneys 2010 "Alice in Wonderland" is actually a sequel of the original fairytale (and therefore of the Disney 1951 version). Ofc I would´ve made some visual changes but otherwise it´s perfect
Baz Lurhman and Joe Wright are my top choices for some of these remakes. Damien Chazelle & Guillermo Del Torro too. As for the future, I think Blitz Bazawule would do an amazing job for Princess & the Frog. For Hercules, this 1 is tough because u would need someone who knows how to do both action and musicals. I want epic swords and sandal fight scenes.
My thing with basically every disappointing live action remake we’ve had is… what’s the point in even making a film if it isn’t potentially going to be someone’s favourite film of all time? Like I know I’m very much the film snob who’s thinking about direction and costuming and lighting and character etc and it’s that mindset that fuels people to make thinkpieces and video essays about how crass these films are but the people who like it who didn’t think too hard who just needed their kids entertained for an hour and a half or so… I don’t think there’s a single one of them who’d call most of these their favourite movie. And that’s a shame. I can see Cinderella 2015 being someone’s favourite movie, I certainly love so much about it (they’re all looking at you, believe me they’re all looking at YOU… gets me every time). Little mermaid had glimmers of greatness from Halle’s performance and energy as Ariel, the chemistry between her and Eric and some shots are amazing like when she reaches out to the surface for the first time- but it’s let down by so much blandness and wonk cgi you’re so right to say this should’ve been a visual spectacle where people go no listen you NEED to see this movie! I have hopes for Snow White where I’m hoping with Gerwig writing it it’ll be like barbie where we’re tapping into the identity of the Disney princess archetype but idk every update about that movie terrifies me
I really disappointed in the cgi and the costumes designer for the little mermaid. Halle was the perfect fit to be Ariel her voice was amazing. Disney should've just hire James Wan who directed Aquaman.
Keep in mind that the visuals of _Cinderella_ are suppose to be historical realism mixed with whimsical fantasy. And since it's also a fairy tale, it needs to look and feel cozy and warm. I don't see how anyone could have done a better job. Anything they attempt to "improve" would most likely ruin it.
I think all of the directors chosen for their respective live action remakes were good choices…with the exception of The Lion King. Jon Favreau should’ve just produced it and handed the reins to someone like Spike Lee (who has worked on almost everything from music videos, concert films, documentaries, and video games).
in terms of tim burton association with alice, it is safe to say that it was like equivalent to Steven Spielberg's Hook, But still, He is still would be the perfect directing choice to remake his version of Alice into a proper adaptation of the source material that it used to be expected in the 2010 film despite its achieving merits, no?
I'd loved to see the movies with these directors. Sadly we won't ever get them. (btw the first 3 pirates of the caribbean movies are a masterpiece, I love them. But after the third one the movies lost their heart imo)
Not that I know anything about it but isn't the problem of many of these movies the script rather than the director's job? I mean the director has to stay somewhere near to the script of the story. For example Mulan live action, the writers should have written it better in the first place, shouldn't they?
Mr. Cuaron, Watiti, or Mr. Del Toro, but yes Watiti did a lame lame lame lame lame lame lame failure to Thor 4. Ever in each upcoming for an idea to make a remake film needs to be greater design screen effect as real art.
Guillermo for Beauty and The Beast would have been BEAUTIFUL and GRAND and certainly (definitely) romantic 💞.
