- UQ has fledged! 💕🐥 He sure picked a special day to take flight with the ringing of the bells today on Sept 25th! Godspeed UQ - the last of the fab four chicks to take flight! Enjoy some of the last coverage I got of UQ before he went down the hill and out of cam view on Sept 23rd.
From Ranger Sharyn: "UQ (Upper Quarry) chick has fledged this morning! There are some good breezes today and he was supplementary fed yesterday. He is now 237 days old and has been looking in good condition for fledging. There are still 9 chicks as we (DOC rangers) picked up one from the Aramoana Salt Marsh over the weekend. This chick took the long way back around the harbour to the headland but was safely picked up!
The cam will stay in this location until after egg laying in November. We may see new arrivals coming to this location over the next several weeks." Thank you for watching!

I took up watching all these cameras because I'm terminally ill and can't sleep a lot of times. I find it strangely comforting to know that some of these same young Albatrosses will still be coming here to nest for as long as 30 years from now. Thanks Lady Hawk for this clip.
Yes and I hope that we will see Manaaki NTF UQ and Quarry chicks in 5+ years when they return as adolescents and ready to start that courtship dance!!

Good on ya, UQ! What a great year this was for Royalcam, we were so fortunate to meet not one but four funny chicks, each with their own personality. The slightly saturnine Manaaki ruling from his nest. NTF, the carrier of SSTrig's memorable torch. Sweet UQ the hovering master, and Quarry the social butterfly, always displaying her wings for him. I will miss them! But I am also forward to seeing the antics of our returnees!
UQ gives us one last look as he does a PS to lighten his load, gives a cute little tail wiggle and walks away out of sight to meet his destiny! It has been a wonderful experience getting to know the Fabulous Four! What awesome birds they are! Wishing them all fair winds, safe travels and lots of 🐟🦑 Thank you Lady Hawk for enriching our lives with all your true life bird stories! We appreciate you! 🤍

To leave, UQ chose the day of the bells that greet the return of the albatrosses after their adventurous journey. UQ has just started it and ideally reached his friends Manaaki, Miss Q and Miss NTF.
Fly high and safe, supported by the thoughts of all of us: you have filled us with joy and smiles and have made us immerse ourselves again in the miracle that nature offers at every season and at every latitude.
And after the tears of joy and sadness at leaving, we will be ready for a new wonderful adventure of the miracle of life.

I'm never ready to see them leave...tears started the second I read the title. All the albies are precious, but our special four have a permanent place in my heart. I'm so thankful UQ had another supp feed yesterday to boost him on his life's journey. Yet, for all of the above, how wonderful that he soared into the great blue skies to the sound of bells ringing in recognition of how special his species is to the island, adding a special prayer to the wind beneath his magnificent wings! It couldn't have been better. And I loved ringing my bell knowing it was joining others around the world to celebrate these beautiful birds and their perfect return to their homeland, and, poignantly now, the fledging of our UQ! 🙏♥

Hello rand it was nice to know that UQ fledged on this special bell ringing day!! I wanted to see one of his fantastic hovers and then just see him keep going! But we know he had a lot of practice and is doing well out there ♥ His first night flying over the ocean!!
We got two for one this year - UQ and Manaaki (SP). From a tiny hatchling to fledging. And their two female friends, of course.

UQ joined Minaaki some time ago and then they began a wonderful bond of exploring and preparing together. The times that they would race one another to the camera installation, and their interactions terrific. When Manaaki fledged, it made us fully embrace how precious UQ was as he graced us with his presence on the cliffside. He reminded us of the ones that had already set upon their mysterious journeys and also foreshadowed what was coming ahead for him, we could only hang onto you UQ for so long. Then with bells ringing he seizes his destiny and flew into the blue Azures. This seems very much like season's end, but the beginning of the journey to these two wonderful chicks, and also the other ones that fledged before, and the few that are still remaining. Their parents are wonderful, the process is spectacular, the longest to fledge of any bird, I believe, but with the greatest purpose. They can fly 500 miles per day and circumvent the globe in about 46 days. I wish UQ a full crop, calm seas and wonderful skies and air currents. Godspeed, God bless thank you, Lady Hawk. Ranger Sharyn and Royal Cam you are a wonderful team that have blessed us with your dedication and diligence. Bless all🙏

Hi Tamara that is the MSC Banu III which is a global container ship that was bound for Port Chalmers. I love watching all the ships that pass by! The cruise ships will be starting up again in a couple of months!

I don't remember the first time we actually saw UQ chick- I knew there as a nest there and we could see the parents coming in for a feeding. It must have been when UQ was able to stand up and stretch his wings that we got to see him. And of course when he was walking! UQ has a good day to take flight - he got a supp fed yesterday from the rangers and had a full tummy. He also cast a bolus before he fledged (and they were all squid beaks!) and he got to see him Mom one last time before he left. How special is that?? ♥Thanks for being her again watching QE and commenting every day!!! It is really appreciated!! TC

So grateful the DOC manages this colony, supplementary feeds the ones that need help due to a missing parent, and rescues the ones that don’t quite fledge, getting their second chances. Thanks, as always, to Lady Hawk, for documenting all the action and providing education every step of the way! Safe travels UQ. You and all of your “hill mates” will be missed. 💕

I used to watch them live a lot, I had lots of sleepless nights(from UK) just to watch them,but stopped doing it recently, because camera is not following the birds properly and it's very frustrating!Good bye sweet UQ and others too..I hope I will see them again in 4-10 years time, if I am still alive thats is.😊And I hope and pray that they will find more experienced camera operators for next year!🙏🙏
